worldedit is a mod, and worldpainter is a program. worldpainter is good for making custom terrain, and worldedit lets you make large scale changes all at once, and easily copy things around instead of remaking it by hand.

Trixy is nuts, one of the best most imaginative builders in Minecraft, I'd love too see this guy on the hermitcraft server if he could build in survival instead of using world edit. World edit is an in-game mod that you put in to Minecraft when you want to make huge builds. So he is playing the game and it's not a program. He isn't playing survival, but creative go make all those builds. First, he makes the build (larger builds needs world edit) before he copy and pasted all in-game by using a command through the Minecraft chat.

World edit isn't the same as world painter. World painter is a program used for mostly terrain from a top down perspective like you were saying. World edit isn't a program though it's just a plugin you can get on regular minecraft that allows you to run commands and custom comands quickly in game like running the copy command which is already part of vanilla minecraft. If you go into vanilla minecraft you can still use copy and past commands and command blocks to run whatever you want to without needing an external program. World painter just saves some time on the terrain for large scale projects.

Yes, he doesn't play survival, but he doesn't create these builds on a different program either. He just plays the creative gamemode instead of survival. And world edit is a mod you can install to the game.

How world edit works is you are still in the game as normal there is not external place like the sims how you described it. It's more like a mod that is in the game which gives you special tools and commands to generate certain shapes eg spheres or cuboids and you have different tools to help you create cool builds. Like you can have a brush tool and set your brush to make squares or cylinders or whatever. You can also just sort of copy paste your own builds across the Minecraft map.

WorldEdit is a mod, you use it within Minecraft itself. WorldPainter though is external program.

To put it in perspective world painter really changes nothing other then doing terrain other then that it still takes months and sometimes years it does make it somewhat easier but still very very very long
