@@dapzle3459 Yep. The biggest downside that wasn't mentioned is the lack of mobs in vanilla, but I played a modpack called wasteland that adds mobs in. You basically have to create grassy areas with water buckets you find, plant saplings and wheat seeds you find, and use those to get apples and bread so you don't starve. Sheep spawn in, etc, but it really feels like you're creating a safe haven in a dead world, which is really interesting to me.

Minetest has also a better world map - 31,000 nodes vs Minecraft: 29,000 nodes. And there are good biomes in Minetest - better than Minecraft - Valleys biomes it's the best. But mobs and npcs mods in Minetest suck. But yea, you can simply create a *.lua file and create new blocks for your world server. I love it.

A few things that should be noted: -Minetest is an open source ENGINE and not just a game not only do you have access to a nice, lua based scripting engine but on top of that you can also modify the actual engine which removes many of the limitations of being stuck on just a scripting engine, think implementing something like a different rendering engine or a more advanced physics system -Minetest isn't intended to be used on it's own the intent of it is that it serves as a tool to build off of, allowing anyone with the knowledge needed to be able to create their own games on top of it and redistribute those -Minetest is an early in development project as of it's latest release, minetest is in version 0.4.17.1 and is still in a very alpha state -Minetest is distributed as open source if you don't wanna wait until a new release to test out new systems, you don't have to as you could go and compile the code yourself provided you know how to -Minetest is free says it all right there

You shouldn't call anything fake before understanding the whole concept of open source software, minecraft is Mojangs property whereas Minetest is completely free and fully modifiable by the community , the source code is available and anyone can learn from it. more over due to the open nature anyone with the programming know how can great new feature and implement them as mods. By mods I'm not just talking textures but entire signaled and complete feature set like farming ,mobs, quests etc. But then again I think you are just a prepubescent minecraft fan.

Everything missing from minetest_game here is available as an easy to find and install mod or part of a different game on this engine. Minetest is just there to put cubes and characters on the screen, the "game" you play (such as the default one) is what changes.

Minetest is not a ripoff it's the open source community centered version of it. The creators are big fans but they knew the technical limits of Minecraft and the dev's unwillingness to empower the user to the max since the main focus of notch is making money. Minetest is free and power user friendly. Community centred. If you like Minecraft you should all be thankful that there is a community it there that is developing Minetest so that when one day you want to make changes to the game or revert stupid or greedy decisions from Mojang, you will be able to. I for one since I have little money am really glad that I was able to create a computer ALU with the electronic pack from Minetest without having to spend any money. It was a lot of fun and it wouldn't have been possible without these generous people.

For a nice, clear and short description on about, what minetest actually is, please refer to minetest.net (especially useful before commenting). Latest improvments for Minecraft are great, especally making the marine area much more vivid - also it ran well on linux wich is essential for me. Finally actually considerating to buy a copy.

Some noteworthy mentions, that always seam to emerge, when these two are compared. Not realy a fair compare on about graphics, stability, etc: - Minecraft is backed by dedicated and paid full-time professional team; - Minetest is done by hobbyists and fans from spare-time and without earning any income from it. __Minetest is not Minecraft__ (and why should it be, with Mincreft already being so great being Minecraft - not really that expensive either) - is it an alternative: not really, but can be - if desiered so (with mods and a lot of extra work: scripting). __Minetest isn't even a game by itself__, but an engine for games: game should be downloaded separately or compiled from modes on your own (you won't make use of modes or gamepacks, you miss out a lot: take a look at some servers to get more realistic view of its capabilities).

I love mc, but minetest is a very good, “engine” cause it permits to create AN ENTIRE game on its base, a GREAT modding api though lua and a in-app mod/modpack/game/texture browser. My opinion is that minetest is better than mc in so many ways, but mc has idk what that make it “better”

On the loading screen speed, as a player of minetest, that speed is only thanks to zero mods. once you chuck a few mods in there it takes longer, but also gains a more versatile gameplay

Think of this: Survivalcraft started as an average Minecraft ripoff. But look at it today. It has tons of content that aren't available on Minecraft and it even has a sequel with MORE CONTENT. So that's why you don't judge immediently.

I agree that minetest game Isn't very good. Needs mods. Which are VERY easy to make (I know quite a few 'average intelligence' 12-15 year olds who make some good mods) and download (A nine year old could could do it without help). The minetest engine is a lot better though. Some people have made some amazing games with it. Also: How is Minetest a ripoff? You actually SAVE money buy getting it instead of Minecraft

Here to say, that, it also depends on the server which features you have. There are servers, who have muuuuuch more than Minecraft. And u can also install mods for more. PLUS, it's all FREE !

Minetest is simply a much better game than Minecraft. It has many more options, and freedom. It doesn't limit you at all to how low or high you want to build ... It contains a lot of biomes, and some are even 3000+ blocks low. It contains many more materials and many tweaks that even Minecraft 1.9 will not have. From my long experience, I can say that Minetest is a much better game than Minecraft. I'm sorry, but those portals, dozens of plants, raw materials, minigames .......... . just got me on the Minetest.

Minetest is more of a game engine than it is a game. You can create a wide variety of games in Minetest with nothing but some knowledge of Lua and the API. Sure, it's not perfect, but Minecraft isn't either. Minetest is open-source, free, and offers a huge variety of customization. What more could you possibly want?

What Minecraft has is a shitton of popularity and momentum. The game's been out for the better part of a decade and has been popular for much of that time. With that popularity, have come countless servers, and communities, and despite the relative lack of support for modding compared to some other games, it has more mods than anything else I can think of. Minetest might have it's own modding api that's not maintained by a third party, like forge, but minecraft will still have 100 times more mods just because it's popular and people who get into modding tend to mod the games they and their friends are playing.

If one thinks, Minetest to not be good enough, don't complain but lend a hand for improvment instead (surely you're well talented in something too). Myth#1: One can't earn with Minetest, as it must be free-of-charge if redistributed: true in general, but Myth#2: One can earn with a help of Minetest via providing a dedicated service (server hoting, mods, texturepacks, gamecompilation, goal oriented fundraising, etc) for it.
