In this Minecraft tutorial, I show you how to create a very simple and easy pumpkin and melon farm to get lots of items!
Materials:
28 Blocks
24 Pistons
24 Observers
24 Redstone Dust
2 Chests
2 Water Buckets
1 Hopper
1 Hoe
Up to 16 seeds of either Melons or Pumpkins
64 Bonemeal (optional)

side tip: sometimes if you have the watermelons on the edge they can get pushed out of the farm, so put up some glass above the farm

doesn't look vrery efficient - what if the broken blocks land on the plant area? also requires a lot of observers,

If the broken blocks don’t land in the water initially they should eventually get entity combined into a stack that is flowing downstream. I might personally improve this farm by covering the water and using a hopper mine cart to collect the items instead, much like a sugarcane farm.

The pistons aren't firing despite the melons/pumpkins being fully grown. There's blocks behind the observers, redstone behind each piston. What gives?

check if the observer if facing into the stems

@@BasicRedstone Yup they're facing the stems. I reset all the pistons and it started working but it seems completely random when the pistons are fired. I'm content though because it's still yielding plenty just running in the background. Thanks for an awesome build/tutorial!

Redstone wire only points straight and not into the sides of the blocks

double check your redstone dust placement as it shouldn't create a line unless behind an observer which is incorrect
