This is a great design! I'll definitely be trying this out in my own world. Though couldn't it be even more compacted by using repeaters to active the pistons? thereby forgoing any need to keep the redstone lines seperate.

Yes! the design absolutely could be made more compact using just observers. I did mine a little different as I hate having pistons constantly firing in the background.
