I like to think it's combat trials. Steve is teaching Alex to stay quick on her feet because of how badly she got beaten down before. Another comment somewhere said that Steve is an older player and has had time to learn the redstone mechanics which is why so many of his contraptions are redstone. Alex was only the 2nd skin introduced to the game and that was some time after the game came out, so she hasn't had time to learn the advanced mechanics. So Steve tries to help the only way he knows how, and probably the same way he learned at the beginning of the game, before he got into the redstone. Also I absolutely love Alex's portrayal and art style in this. She's absolutely adorable.
