This is why i have been playing RL Craft lately. The game needs a BIG weapon update in where you can craft rapiers/Greatswords with additional effects such as absorbing damage, giving lifesteal or poison/bleed damage and different bows.

One thing that will make the enchanted version of these armors wayy better is if the trims have their own glow or shine corresponding to the color it is whenever its enchanted !.. Almost like neon strips on your armor.. Might look VERY COOL !

Worth pointing out that the Rib trim (the one that Jordan points out doesn't "pop" as much as he thought diamond would) actually makes the trim darker! All other materials used will have a darker tone when used with this smithing template. Quartz works amazingly well with the Rib trim for a skeletal armour type look :)

I always kept my silk touch diamond but made fortune netherite. I use fortune most. Also i name everything of mine. depending on my build style at the time, i'll name them to fit. Id still regardless would love to see trimmed tools. Like the sword can have runic etching as a trim style.

At the very least, there is 550 different metal/gem armor sets to make. The turtle helmet can also be trimmed, but it doesn't have a set so it doesn't count. And that isn't including leather, as you can make 12,326,391 leather armor sets.

That and ender pearls for that dark blueish green color that we all know and love Blaze rods/powder would also look pretty cool for a more molten look, and I feel like glowstone was an obvious choice that they forgot to implement (since it too is a mineral/gem). Chain would be a really cool trim, since it could make it look like you’re wearing a layer of chainmail beneath your armor.

This will be useful for team games since you can have everyone have the same variety of armor but with a different trim for each team. Like diamond trim for blue team, gold trim for yellow team, etc.

7:16 You can apply netherite patterns to netherite armor if you apply the netherite trim pattern on the diamond armor before upgrading it. A lot of them have very subtle variations you wouldn't notice, but the vex pattern makes the netherite chestplate look like it just survived an explosion.

I agree, it would be really nice if the trims had minor status effects that corresponded to their location. It would also be awesome if the smithing table could be used to bring weaker armor and tools closer to the standard of neatherite at an appropriate cost of course. There should also be an option to remove the shimmer from enchantments entirely because the armor sets look really clean without it. I hope they do a lot more with letting players choose what armor they want to wear because they’ve definitely just opened that door.

That would be the bare minimum considering they just jacked up the price of full netherite armour from 24 diamonds to 45 for no reason. It’s literally going to cost 82 diamonds for full netherite armour and all 3 tools plus a sword. That doesn’t include the trim by the way which you would need to dupe 4 times for an additional 28 diamonds Or you could rely on RNG and just hope you get lucky and find the 8 netherite upgrades and 4 trims you need to avoid paying the duplication cost

You actually can put a netherite trim on netherite armor, and it looks slightly different to regular netherite armor. You do it by applying the trim to a piece of diamond armor and then upgrading the diamond armor to netherite.

I should mention this in my investigations, rib trim darkens all the colors, in fact all of the trim templates have slight changes to the colors. so diamond is really vibrant with other templates. i personally love the gold rib trim it gives a rusted orange and its gorgeous

I think there should be an ability to "coat" armor as well, coating works like dyeing leather, in that you coat your armor in a different material like you can do here with trims to change its color (corresponding to the armors color, so netherite armor thats coated would appear darker than expected due to netherite being a darker material)

Wow insane that Minecraft is still receiving fairly big updates this much later after it's release, one game that really never did any wrong by anyone, always been good. But yeah Minecraft is also a interesting phenomenon with that. :D I'm playing it personally most of the time with mods as well since I consider Vanilla MC more of the boring things, especially when it comes to automations and big chunk clearing 😂 I'd like to autofarm any resources (Diamonds are not real possible in vanilla yet, even tho they are pretty useless in vanilla terms beside getting your armor and tools, now they are needed at least for some armor decoration improvements which is good for me) and there are many mods to help you cleaning out big areas in nearly no time compared to doing it on your own beside a Haste2 Beacon for example ^^

I hope they add weapon and tool trim. I wanted a way to make different tools (like silk touch vs. fortune) identifiable and the trim-solution looks like a neat way to do that. Could help a lot with making distinct gear for different purposes. Like a fire-res set with redstone trim or a water-breathing/ocean set using lapis, etc.

banner patterns are reusable. this is the exact same mechanic they copied for smithing tempaltes. "Banner patterns are used in looms to add customization to banners. The pattern must be combined with 1 banner and 1 dye. Upon usage in the loom, the banner pattern is not consumed."

But the cosmetics themselves don't serve a purpose. They don't actually upgrade the armor, even though they should. If this makes it to 1.20, I don't wanna keep up with downloading the inevitable mod or data pack so I can get functionality that should already be in the game

Mods have been doing this for ages, and in mods where every cosmetic change has function - like the tools in Tinker's Construct - aesthetics _do_ factor in to people's decisions and people do often take less-than-optimal materials because of their superior looks compared the others in their tier. Mimicking that kind of system here will sacrifice customisability and will result in most people having pretty much identical - optimal - armour trims. No thank you.

@@aguyontheinternet8436 no but it does give things a purpose. That and might make you 2nd guess your decision especially if you know it would be bit more expensive to get it. Ex diamond armor will be used longer than it was before. Since right now neither fortresses, bastions, warp forests etc they don't really have an entire reason to travel to. Yes they look nice and you may want it for decor blocks but from an over all thing they don't or aren't needed. If there wad a recipe that required the said item that you will use which isn't just clogging space then it serves a purpose. It also means "Oh I need to do this to further advance" rather than "yep game boring I'm done"

Eh, I was thinking the same thing at first, until I realized it would just result in people using a specific trim because it's better and not because they just think it looks cool. I think I'd prefer they keep it cosmetic, and if they were to add a buff I'd want it to be the same across all trims, so you're encouraged to use trims, but which trim you use is entirely based on your aesthetic preferences.

A few things I'd like to point out: - The diamond trim isn't vibrant because the Rib pattern specifically is more muted than the rest; compare it to another pattern and the difference will be obvious - I assume this is unintentional, but you CAN put a netherite trim on netherite armour if you trim diamond armour then upgrade it. The difference between it and unaltered netherite is subtle, but it is there - You can also trim turtle shells, but not elytras or leather armour

Given that it was said during MCLive at some point, I feel like this is going to be the Expression or Expressive update, just with how many new options players are being given. I also really love the idea of the trim, but I do think it's a bit too expensive for what it is/does, especially given that diamonds (along with Ancient Debris) are one of the very few items in Minecraft that are still non-renewable. Maybe at the very least having iron on the sides (making the recipe the template, the material, the diamond, and 6 iron). 7 diamonds just feels like way too much for something cosmetic. Maybe keeping the recipe but adding durability to the template and allowing something like unbreaking or mending to be put on it?

I feel like this update is more looking at end-game moments, once you've got all you r farms, done all the achievements you wanna do, what else is there left to do but build? Well, now you can spend all those diamonds that have been sitting idly, maybe getting used once in a while to repair your netherite gear, to make some cool new armour! And remember, the diamonds are only if you want to copy the template, you can just go out and find 4, and not have to waste any diamonds on slapping a gold trim on your iron armour

Diamonds are worthless as is with how potent villagers are so giving a cosmetic use for them is perfectly valid, especially considering most end game gear is going to have mending/unbreaking on it to make it effectively endless.

Jardon I just want to point out that different trim patterns have different shades of light and dark to them. For example the rib trim is probably the darkest one, which is why you thought the diamond wasn't as vibrant as you expected. Try putting all the trims next to each other in the same color and you will see the difference.

i am really excited for servers with trim! i can imagine like employee uniforms for shops and just everyone having their own style, it could be super fun! i also hope it’s doesn’t do too too much for functionality. if it does anything i hope each trim is equally useful but i just hope you are free to choose any trim without one being obviously better

They have no actual function, but it would definitely be possible to add it with datapacks. In fact, they designed it so that you can use datapacks and resource packs to add as many different trims as you want, so I’m looking forward to seeing if people make really cool custom trims with it

The trim idea is pretty cool, it's always nice to have new ways to customize things. I'm just not sure how well it's been implemented. At least they've added a new sink for diamonds. I'm okay with that. Most people eventually get to the point where they literally have more materials than they know what to do with, including diamonds. So it's definitely good to have something else to do with them than just making a hundred jukeboxes. ;)

I haven’t really been invested in most Minecraft updates because a lot of them are very vertical (more progression, but not too many options) or just cosmetics that are purely focused on adding more blocks that look pretty (which is admirable but it gets to a point of redundancy eventually). This is my favorite update in recent memory. It’s cosmetic, but it’s really cool. It makes armor customization viable, since now you can do more than just dye armor and strap banners to shields. It adds personality to the game and it’s a horizontal addition since you now have a bunch of options to choose from that aren’t strictly better or cooler than each other. It’s why I love the Tinker’s Armory addition mod and I think this is a wonderful thing to add to the base game

It would be really cool if they added buffs for each template that buffed you at the location you find the templates. Like +1 damage or defense in fortresses or end cities or whatever, like yeah now its harder to get but its even better and there's more than cosmetic incentive to collect all templates
