The spotted wolf is based off of the African Wild/Hunting Dog! Look them up: Mojang did a very good job recreating their fancy fur. It might give you a bit more appreciation for the in-game appearance, they're one of my favorites of the new fur types!

As well as the rusty wolf is a dhole, the striped is a hyena, and the ashen is a husky
