Smoove the reason you hear ghasts is because where you spawned is like a huge underground cave. You are below the nether surface. Once you get all your nether stuff squared away you can dig straight up and see the REAL nether.

***** Ghasts need sufficient space in the nether to spawn, since they are 4*4*4. So if you dig straight up and find a larger area then they will be there

***** Sometimes there is no real telling but this happens in the end to so you just have to dig up or down and you will find the real nether. But you were really lucky because you can have all your stuff without having to face the plummets of the real nether.

First time I entered the nether I wasn't aware that it mirrored the overworld. My world was 70% water so when I entered the nether I spawned on a small Island 70 blocks in air with Ghasts everywhere with nothing but lava all 360 degrees around me. Needless to say I ended up making a new world.

Yeah Smoove i dont know why there are no Ghasts in your world but in my first trip to the Nether there would be 2-3 Ghasts at the same time every 5 mins.They are very easy to kill though it only takes 2-3 arrows to take them down

the chunks wouldn't be loaded in the nether so the blazes wouldn't spawn with your portal idea. Also ghast's drop ghast tears which allows you to make regen pots

Smoove look up blaze rod farming on youtube!!! In my worlds when I find a blaze spawner, you can put blocks around it to where they spawn and you hit them where their legs would be and they cant shoot fire at you!! Great way to gain xp as well as blaze rods!!
