Minecraft: Tank Tutorial - T-90

T90's aren't main battle tanks, they are non-mass produced medium sized tanks designed to provide support for the mass produced heavier tanks like the IS 8

IS-8 is not used anymore the T-90 was an intern solution while a better tank was being developed it combines characteristics of the T-80 and T-72

I think that the thing on the back is a spare fuel tank that the T-90 carries around until it runs out of fuel or goes into combat.

Kinda makes sense though you wouldn't want it to get hit with an incendiary round

They drop the spare fuel tank when they go into combat, its only used to increase the range of the tank.
