My grandparents lived in Hopcott Close and I spent most school holidays there. Back then there was a brilliant model and airgun shop in (I think) Market house lane. Google maps has it as a hairdresser now. There were two other great model shops, the one where Saltrock is now, sold model RC aircraft and you'd see flyers buzzing around model Spitfires and stuff, at the end of Bossington Hill. The harbour smelt like like a working fishing harbour and there always nets being mended and fishermen coming in or prepping to go out. All along the sea front before the 'new' wall obscured the view, there were coloured lights hanging between the lamposts. Before the 'family entertainment centre', on the sea front, it was called carousel (shitty amusements), but before that there were great amusements all along, plus a permanent bumper cars ring and a proper size crazy golf.. We didn't need to get into Butlins, there was plenty to do for kids elsewhere. I'd take my bike up North Hill or over towards Bossington, go mushrooming up there at 5:30am in the summer and so on. Last time I came (from Reading) was around 2021 and there was a lot of closed places and a really subdued vibe. A real shame Butlins has taken over the town but on the other hand, would Minehead exist without it. Still got great memories of the place but going forward its being ruined.
