Good morning Merrill, Merry xmas To everyone. Thank you to everyone who takes the time to share. Todays video is no exception. Watching and listening to you and Phil today was great. Having the operating comparisons 600 v 800. Looking forward to hearing what Mine lab has to say will be very educational. Take care everyone, and thank you all for lighting up my life each day. Cheers to All David

The difference between the 800 in the 600 is the obvious gold mode the extra user spot that you can save a program.. the extra adjustability inside of the machine the 800 adjust and single increments and the 600 adjust in increments of 2 there for the 800 has just a couple more notches in between and at the top end and low end that the 600 doesn't have on things like recovery speed, iron bias that would be saying that you could tell the difference between a 1 and 2 on the bias, or a 1 or 2 or recovery speed this may be helpful in extremely limited cases but for the most part these machines set up in a normal way are going to run identically when it comes to park mode Beach mode and Relic mode

I noticed with my 800 that the chatter lessens when you turn the recovery speed down to 1. You have to swing pretty slow but it helps in areas that have a lot of chatter. Im glad I watched this video to learn importance of a well maintained machine

Merrill they have new shafts I believe for the 600/800. I recommend you get a set of detect-ed shafts. Those stripped connectors are a common problem with the 600 / 800.

By the way there are two types of detect ed shafts. The color and price is the only difference I've noticed. The black ones are a little cheaper than the red ones also they both work and fit together. I own both colors and they fit together / mix match fine.

Although it's an older generation, i had my Explorer SE serviced, replaced some of the bigger capacitors and it's a complete different machine now, more akkurate, more clear, a little more depth and much more separation, i have used it for twelve years almost every day. Stil using it every week and finding stuff. I also run a nox 800, the tremendous anfibio multi and the simplex, stil the Explorer SE manages to find things left by the other ones. All on the same fields in Fryslân europe.

Another great video. You are blessed to be in the New York area where there are so many people past and present that have dropped things. My entire state has about half the population of the city. My thoughts on the hardware question is that more than likely the 2 models are using the exact same boards. The difference lies in the firmware. For the chatter may want to check the usual suspects such as connection at the head unit and also the connection at the coil as well as the coil cover. And trying different coils to see if the problem is with one coil.

Hi Merrill, I don’t think that was emi, I believe either your coil has a tiny leak or possibly the cable. Also if Phil got the plug wet when he disconnected it and then reconnected a little drop of salt water in the connection would cause that chatter. Earlier before you switched machines your 600 was quiet. I’ve had both the 600 and now the 800 and they both performed similarly in saltwater. Jmtc, merry Xmas!

Bluetube 1000 ... I think you nailed it. I've seen this happen with two of my other detectors. Either had water get inside the coil or a bad coil connection to the box. Also it pays to remove the coil cover (if you have one) and clean out any crud that has accumulated. I agree that the 600 and 800 are similar in regards to handling EMI. I don't think it makes a difference which machine you have.

Making your Equinox purr like a kitten while detecting and roar like a lion on a target by G.M. “Doc” Lousignont, Ph.D. Optimize your Equinox for peak “QUIET” performance. We have a lot of new detectorists as well as detectorists who have never used a Minelab machine before going through a learning curve with the Equinox. The most common problem seems to be that new Equinox owners feel the detector is noisy and they are not sure how to calm the machine down. Here are some tips from Doc, your resident expert. DETECTING TIPS: I know when you see detectors in pictures you always see the coil cable neatly wound around the lower and upper stem. The cable is usually secured with Velcro® wraps. Don’t do it! Run the cable straight up the lower rod from the coil, securing it with Velcro® wraps. Once you get to the mid rod, then you can start to wrap the coil cable, and secure it with wraps until you plug it into the back of the machine. You want to be extremely careful about the wrap you put on the coil cable down by the coil. Make sure you leave enough slack so when you lay the machine down, with the coil flat on the ground, you have enough play in this coil cable that you are not stressing it. Why do you not want to wrap the coil cable around the lower rod? Have you ever seen one of those enormous electro-magnets used in a junk yard to lift cars? Well inside that big disk is nothing more than a bunch of wound wire. When electricity is ran through it, it creates a magnetic field. Well the same thing can happen with your coil cable when it is wound on the lower rod. You turn your detector on, it sends energy down the coil cable, and when it is wound around the lower rod, you have created a magnetic field right above your coil. This can desensitize your coil as your detector struggles to adjust itself to a magnetic field it can also cause erratic behavior. The other issue that can cause noisy operation is having the sensitivity too high. Sensitivity is a big issue. People assume the higher the sensitivity the deeper the detector will go. Not true. Run the sensitivity too high and the detector spends all of it’s time trying to adjust to an over-sensitive machine instead of finding worthwhile targets. You must understand all of the fundamental operations of the detector. So download and printout that manual. You don’t have to memorize it all. But you should work through the manual with your detector in hand and learn all of the features the detector offers. A lot of the features such as the tone, you may set once and never set again. Other settings you may learn to appreciate and always use them in given circumstances. The manual is available for download on Minelab.com under Equinox. Cell phones are another big issue. Seriously! A major issue. Turn your phone off and get it as far away from your detector as possible. Put it in your backpack, up and away from the detector. Another issue is your Pin Pointer. If it is not a Minelab Pin Pointer, you can actually be getting interference from your non-Minelab Pinpointer EVEN WHEN IT IS OFF! Remember the wound wire, magnetic field problem mentioned above? Well most pinpointers have windings. These windings can actually pick up the energy from your detector and cause a magnetic field and drive your detector crazy. Especially if it is too close to the detector. Minelab actually identified this issue long ago. To that end they developed their DIF Technology: Minelab’s Detector Interference Free (DIF) technology significantly reduces interference with an operating metal detector, when the pinpointer is switched off, by disengaging the pinpointer coil’s magnetic field.? UNDERSTANDING THE NOISE CANCEL FEATURE: Noise Cancel is a very important and critical feature of all Minelab Detectors. What Noise Cancel does is it searches for interference or lack there of. When it finds an interference free channel it locks onto it and uses it to provide you with a relatively noise free channel of operation. Nothing is perfect, and neither is NOISE CANCEL, but you can help Fine Tune the Noise Cancel feature. #1. Is there a known source of interference nearby? Another Detectorist. High Power Lines. Cell Towers or Antennas on the tops of mountains? If so, do this: Aim your coil at the suspected source of interference. Press the settings button, (It’s the GEAR looking icon in the middle under the screen.) Keep pressing it until in the lower left corner of your screen a circle with a hash mark through an up and down depiction of noise appears. That is your NOISE CANCEL mode. Now hold your detector steady, while aiming the coil at the suspected interference source and push the CHECK MARK / “X” button on the right side of the control pad just to the right of the “+” plus button (You can also push the “+” button) This starts the Noise Cancel procedure. The detector cycles through channels looking for a clean channel. It will stop on what it thinks is a quiet channel. It will display a number from -9 to 9. These represent the channels. Is the detector still a little noisy? No worries. We are going to manually look for a clean channel. With your detector still aimed at the suspected source of interference. Push the “+” plus, or “-” button and you will go up or down the channel setting changing the channel. So let’s say that your detector ends up during auto-noise cancel on channel 7. When you push the “-” MINUS button it will go to channel 6, then 5, then 4, etc. When you press the “+” PLUS button it will increase the channel. Often you will find during AUTO-NOISE cancel that the number ultimately displayed let’s say -3, may not be perfectly quiet, but the channel right next to it is. So manually adjust it to -2 or -4 and see if you can find a quiet channel. #2. You don’t know where the interference is coming from or there is relatively no interference. If so, do this: Put your coil on the ground. Now leaving the back of the coil on the ground, tip the front of the coil up at about a 45 degree angle, So from the side your coil it should look something like this __\- That’s a bit more than 45 degrees but you get the idea. Now slowly turn around 360 degrees, make a mental note of where the most interference is coming from. When you find that noisy spot, stop right there. Hold your coil still and go through the AUTO-Noise cancel outlined above, and the MANUAL NOISE Fine tuning using the PLUS or MINUS button I described above. Doing a Noise Cancel on the ground, is important. If you don’t know where the interference is coming from, chances are good it is micro-wave interference or EMI. These sources bounce around. You want to cancel them at ground level because that is where your coil is going to be doing the detecting. After deciding on best channel, hit the DETECT button which is the BLACK button with the icon of a coil on the left side of your control button panel, to the left of the MINUS button. Remember, every time you change your mode, or turn your detector back on, you must do a Noise Cancel again. Changing the mode, changes the sensitivity of the machine and hence your must go through Noise Cancel again to compensate for the new settings. Also, a note regarding the Equinox 600, it does not have the ability to manually adjust the Noise Cancel channel. AFTER NOISE CANCEL: Now Balance your machine. Once again click on the GEAR ICON until you cycle through to the ICON of a coil with an up and down arrow. This should be to the right of the NOISE CANCEL icon that showed up in the lower left hand side of your screen. At first hold the PLUS “+” button down and pump the coil up and down against the ground about 6 inches. Listen to the sound. The coil will sound different either going away from the ground or going towards the ground. That is because your detector is not properly balanced. If you are getting a louder sound going away from the ground that means your detector is NEGATIVELY ground balanced. THIS IS VERY BAD! You will lose a lot of depth and it will be noisy. If you get a louder sound going away from the ground hold down the PLUS button, because the way to get the detector out of a NEGATIVE BALANCE is to ADD POSITIVE ground balance, this is done with the POSITIVE “+” button. Likewise, if you are getting a louder sound when the coil goes towards the ground you are out of balance on the POSITIVE side. The way to get the detector back in balance is to hold the negative button down “-” as this brings the POSITIVE balance down and gets the detector back in balance. You want to use the POSITIVE and NEGATIVE button while pumping the coil up and down until you are either getting no sound, or the sound is the same both going towards the ground and away from the ground with your coil. I know it may be a bit confusing, but let me try to simplify. LOUDER SOUND GOING AWAY FROM GROUND = NEGATIVE BALANCE - PRESS POSITIVE BUTTON To Bring the detector into balance. LOUDER SOUND GOING TOWARDS THE GROUND = POSITIVE BALANCE - PRESS NEGATIVE BUTTON to bring the detector into balance. SAME SOUND GOING TOWARDS OR AWAY FROM GROUND = PERFECTLY BALANCED DETECTOR. When the detector is balanced, push the TARGET / DETECT button in the middle at the bottom of the Button Control Panel. ADVANCED SECRET: Running your detector slightly out of balance on the POSITIVELY balanced side will give you extra depth, BUT it is quite noisy and prone to falsing. I hope these tips and tricks will help new comers to get their Equinox to purr like a kitten while detecting, and roar like a lion when it finds a target. I was having something similar with my shaft and I replaced it with a detected carbon fiber shaft both the upper and lower ($179) to stop the wobble, the weight, the portability and design. The emi I do get from time to time but not like yours. One particular spot on the beach I hunt, I encounter emi horribly not matter what I do but as soon as the coil is in the water at that spot it quiets up. Otherwise the rest of the beach I can run Hot @ 23-25 with no emi. Now I am running the CTX 3030 and can't wait to hit the beach with it.

In theory I like the minelab concept but I haven't seen anybody that owns one go for say 2 to 3 years with out some kind of electronic hitch and yes that's averaging but still if I lay down $1000 for a machine I best get an honest 3 year run without hitches and yes I'm not saying every machine lets make that clear but what I see is a huge percent like 70% have problems for sure and that's huge because after 2 years most warranties are up ! But yes when working that 800 is a special machine in that price range they just need to toughen their machines up a tad ! Merry Christmas thanks for doing honest videos

The difference between 600 and 800 with the chatter has to do with the sweep speed adjustment. Experiment with that. With the 800 I have found that lowering the sweep speed makes a huge difference with emi. The 800 can fine tune this better because of the additional increments 8 vs 3.

Hey Merrill first Merry Christmas to you and your family. Secondly, I run the 600 myself with the factory shaft. My shaft is very stable, no wobble what-so-ever. Also it is not Chatterley at all. I also bought the wireless headphones for it and I would recommend to anyone with a 600 to buy the wireless headphones. I bought the Minelab headphones because I tried using regular ones and the latency was horrible. I then bought low latency wireless headphones but still noticed significant latency. When I got the Minelab headphones, they worked great.

This is exactly why I asked about these 2 a couple months ago... In my mind, I assume that it's like a brand new Camaro with a v6 with vs. A brand new Camaro with a v8. You're gonna get better performance out of the v8 and very likely it iis put together with better quality components

Try swing speed 3 . Mine runs more quiet on 3 . I run sensitivity at 20 - 22 most days. If I hear a faint signal I will bump it up to check the target. I don't think there is much difference in the machines other than the gold mode and the wireless headphones. The wireless headphones are not waterproof as far as I know. I bought a waterproof wired pair from Tony Eisenhower.

I have an Equinox 800. I ran it yesterday with the 15 inch coil on the local beach here in Fort Lauderdale Florida. Electrical interference or whatever was making the detector sensitivity go bananas above the 18-19 range when in and out of the water. This is an inherent problem VLF detectors in saltwater. From what I understand smaller coils will allow the user to increase sensitivity without a loss and stability . Our beaches can be trashy - no pun intended and so I expect that I will eventually get the 6 inch shooter coil but this is not really the kind of coil you want to try to detect a massive beach with. I am thinking the same as you, better used on jetties, around specific objects, defined/grided off locations, etc. - this pertains specifically to beach locations. if you're relic hunting, gold hunting, or something else, the rules are different to a degree. I find the 15 inch coil to be a monster to try to pinpoint with, and I think I'll find myself using the stock coil more than I thought. I think the 15 inch coil is ideal if you are right at the water line but moving up the beach from there toward dry sand - with more trash - becomes a fools errand with the 15 inch coil - to try and separate out what you are seeing - iron, good targets etc. Of course, there is also the issue of target masking with bigger coils - we have enough iron here to fill a boat and it can mask good targets.

After looking back and forth between the 600 and 800 technical specs on the Minelab page the 2 obvious differences are additional frequencies on the 800 and also in noise cancellation. In the specs the 600 only says “auto” for noise cancellation while the specs for the 800 states “ Auto | Manual (-9 to 9)” I think the answer to the chatter lies in the differences between the two machines based on noise cancelation technology.

Purchase a Detect-ED or Anderson Carbon fiber upper/lower shaft, and wobble problem is solved. Make sure to buy new washers and plastic nut/bolts (Detect-ED sells those too). That carbon fiber will lessen your weight on that 15" coil. Would not hurt to invest in a 3d printed coil ear reinforcer too. Clean out the coil cover like people have already said in the recent posts, and the coil connection to the controller box may need cleaning too! Do yourself a favor and buy some Bluetooth APTX-LL headphones (MUST BE APTX-LL), either earbuds or over the ear. You don't have to pay the $140 for the official Minelab ones, you can get a decent pair of either buds or phones for $50! At < $50 if (when) they fall into the water, you don't sweat it as much! Did you put your phone into Airplane Mode like Phillip "The Knox" recommended?

Couple of thoughts for you Merrill, I have had my Nox 600 for a couple of years, first had to replace my shaft as I am tall and have rod maxed, I wore out locking spot so my coil would wobble, so replace. I also had to replace my orginal coil as was chattery alot, it is possible that your machine has a issues??? Just saying 😌 like mine I never had to send in for repair like you did, each machine can have it's particular problems 😉O and make sure you take cover protector off coil once in a while as that can cause chatter when iron and mineralized crap gets in there, it worked many times for me 😊

Can you try a different coil? It might be at some point you've caught the cable? What I'm thinking is the cable shielding is not going to ground. I've re-soldered wires and connectors on other machines in the past and that's cured the problem, I hope you get it sorted pal!

With both machines once you put the head of the detector in the water you lose the signal to wireless headphones. So if you want to hunt water you need wired headphones. Happy Hunting. Merry Christmas

Enjoy viewing your videos. Want to thank you for teaching our youth. I come from a family of teachers from kindergarten to a Professor at UCLA. I'm the black sheep. I'm a retired drug enforcement officer. Iv detected for years. And I own many detectors, but never to many right ? My question is, im getting ready to purchase a Simplex "like I need another detector" but I want to see what all the hype is. However I do not want one that will react to my pin pointers. Do you know if there's an update that will solve this problem. If so could you please point me in the right direction?

Hey I think Bluetube 1000 might be On to something. I had a coil that caused that problem

For chapter you may want to try checking a couple things.. 1 do your shafts have sand in them? 2 is there sand in-between the coil and the coil cover? 3 check where the coil wire goes into the coil, while the detector is on shake that wire a little and see if it changes the sound you may have a worn connection/wire at the place it enters the coil. Also when you connect the coil to the control box, line up the connector, ouch it in then thighten the nut just a little, then push the connector a little more then tighten the nut more. Some times the connectors are not quite straight even though the nut feels tight. Make sure the pins and sockets are clean. Lastly the wire itself sould have a little slack in it, just enough so you can move the coil back and forth, but not enough where it is flimsy or flops around down by the coil or up by the control box...

I have the 800 and what I discovered when I get a lot of chatter is closeness to high wires in the area or are there cables under the beach? Once I move away from high wire areas the chatter goes away.

In a nut shell. The 800 has the 40Khz gold mode, and more bells and whistles in the settngs. Thats it. performance wise, theyn perform the exact same, and process the exact same.
