I love this scene because Ming Lan is just being Ming Lan, but it seems like the first time he sees her as a young woman rather than as his friend's kid sister. The great thing about their relationship is that he never saw her as anything less than a badass, it was just that transition from child to adult that needed to happen, lol.

It's definitely a turning point for him. She was his equal in every way. I love that he never underestimated her. He knew what she was capable of and he admired her wisdom. I love this scene so much.

Yes. Many episodes later when they are having misunderstandings she says ‘I don’t understand you. You are drunk.’ He replies something like ‘I have been drunk since I pulled you out of the river.’ At the end of this clip I think he has taken the decision to marry her.

Then when she starts talking about taking care of his daughter, you can SEE the wheels turning in his head like "hANG ON... I think I'm in love." After their conversation, he does follow her advice but it's half "How do I do right by my kid like she said" and half "How do I set myself up so I can marry her-- if I stand a chance?" At the same time, he was ALL IN to help Yuanruo out of marrying that princess so that the two of them could be together. It's why Yuanruo can only blame himself later. Gu Tingye ALWAYS had her best interests at heart, even if that didn't include him.

He's been hurt and betrayed by the people around him, and she's been hurt and mistreated by the people around her, they both have trust issues. This is the moment he found someone who resonated with him, and shows him sweet kindnesses. I also think this is genuinely the first time he 'saw' her for who she was.

"She's been away all this time and still knows my Rong'er's age" She doesn't make any overt gestures, she just takes care of the girl and spends time with her. That feels more important.

The water must have been really dirty back then.😲 Water rescues seem to be a standard for many Asian films - I was counting how many times someone ended up in the water in Pearl Eclipse, A Female Student Arrives at the Imperial College, My Sweet Liar etc. You are right about the swimming - but you would think they could at least take off that heavy outer robe and maybe the middle garment before they jump into the water. 😳This scene underwater is so artistic- how poignant that Minglan reaches for her little doll - it seems to make her reach up toward the surface and the only hope that she may hold on to that little sliver of love in her life.😢
