These are great little pumps but you have to be careful with the wire, it will break easily next to the pump if you keep bending it and i dont think you can replace the wire if that happens as the pump is thermo sealed. these will actually run on 14.2v pretty well for around 6 months constant, 12v they last about 18 months. with an "L" push on fitting they will fit directly to the back of a watercooling reservoir for cpu cooling, they are also passive meaning you can run two together if one fails the other one still carries on because water flows straight through them when they are not powered.
@johnlangdon3281
@johnlangdon3281 8 жыл бұрын
+Synthematix I bet you could get some silicone goop and slap a big ol'thumb full where the wires meet the housing and it would make it super safe.. Come to think of it, slime up the area it where it comes apart (if you doh't seee yourself taking it apart anytime soon but even then... just re-apply after putting it back together and scrubbing off old layer) and it would really solidify the waterproof-ness :)

I bought this pump and found it has one major issue. In order to work, it has to be submersed. It cannot suck worth a hoot. It does lift water well enough though as long as it's lifting through a hose otherwise its a maximum 8 inch lift.

@@leefiles What do you mean for "self prime" and what is that for or needed for? (excuse my ignorance) thanks in advance
@leefiles
@leefiles 2 жыл бұрын
@@ronaldd.1355 Self-prime is what "Zephod Beeblebrox" originally asked for. The pump will suck water on its own. In non-self-priming pumps, you have to either submerge the pump to get the water flowing or you have to suck the water thru the pipe/hose to get the water started. When you place the pump 's hose in water and turn on the pump, it sucks air. In self-priming pumps, it pulls air as well as water. But they come at a slight cost in terms of money and efficiency.

I powered mine with a celphone charger of 5 V and 0.5 ampers, is that to low? Can i put one with more ampers or will i burn the pump? Water is not high enough
@leefiles
@leefiles 5 жыл бұрын
(I have one powered by an old phone charger that supplies 1A) You would need to know how many amps your pump uses. If you have a phone charger that supplies 1A, even better. So if you use a multi-tester (volt meter/amp meter) and measure how many amps your pump uses at 5 volts, you can then decide which power supply to use. So say your multi-tester shows that your pump is using .5 A at 5 volts, then you should use a stronger power supply like a 1A or 2A phone charger. So if your pump uses .5A and 5-12 volts for example: A phone charger that supplies more than .5A at 5 volts will not burn the pump. A phone charger that supplies .1A will burn itself out. If you use a power supply that supplies 24 volts, it will burn out your pump. If your power supply puts out 5 volts and 5 amps, your power source will be fine and your pump will be fine.

You can wire it to a wall adapter easily. Any 12 volt AC adapter will do. An old network router's unused AC adapter will do. Wire it with solder. If you don't know how to solder use wire nuts.

Thank you very much.. Can you help me with a project? I have a 5v relay auto shut off overflow switch that runs on a 9v. 1st question: Will that be able to shut off this pump in a event of an overflow? 2nd question: if i run this using a 9v batt, how long will a 9v 900mah li-ion batt last?
@leefiles
@leefiles 5 жыл бұрын
Wont the 9 volt source burn out or eventually wear out the 5 volt relay, depending on the quality of the relay? 1yes. 2. not very long. Mine uses just over 300mA. So on your battery, it will run about 3 hours. But that's with no load. Once you raise water at a height above grade, it will use much more current. So you may get as little as an hour or less.

Does anyone have any experience powering such a pump with a solar panel? I'm using a very similar 12 V DC pump in a shishi-odoshi (sort of a Japanese water fountain see-saw) that I'm building for my backyard garden. The problem is I want to power the pump with a solar panel that produces about 21 volts DC in bright sunlight and a current about 150 mA. Hooking the solar panel up directly to the pump doesn't work because (I assume) the pump needs more amps to run. To solve this problem, should I use a charge controller system and/or a 12 volt rechargeable battery?

leefiles Thank you very much! What the solar panel enthusiasts call a charge controller is apparently a current and voltage regulator much like the kind you mention. I acquired a nice 8 amp-hour, 12-V battery for very cheap, as the standard thing to do according to the internet is run the pump off the battery and use the solar panel to keep the battery charged. Thus the system will continue to run at night or during very cloudy weather. The charge controller's electronics keep the battery from becoming overcharged.

Alan Falleur Sorry, a charge controller would actually work better. You're right. BTW your solar panel measures 21 volts? That would be an open circuit right? You measured the solar panel directly? If so, any GOOD 12 volt charge controller would work. Note that some controllers have terminals for: solar, battery, load. That would work best in your situation. You don't want to kill your battery in a few cloudy days.

Alan Falleur I'm guessing you are using an 8AH lead acid battery? I saw some lithium ion batteries that are drop-in replacements for lead acid. But they cost more.

how are you powering the pump?
@leefiles
@leefiles 9 жыл бұрын
milesstarkey123 Mine is 12V. I use DC supplies from dead network routers. I slice off the head (and my index finger).

leefiles You'll have to excuse my lack of knowledge in the field of electronics: So, are you just using the old cables that you've cut? Would there be a way to build a wireless power transfer system (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_power) like what powers a pace maker? (I ask to avoid electrocution by trial) You seem to know electronics pretty well so I thought I'd up the expert factor if you don't mind entertaining a rookies questions.

milesstarkey123 Yeah, that would be two coils. Way too complicated for a pump that costs a few dollars. All I added is one of those wall-warts. If you cut the two wires at the other end you have + and -. So if you wired it wrong, just switch the wires.

There are different models. Its hard to tell. But mine lifts water up to 10 feet or 3 meters. That's a little over 4 PSI.

Is this arduino pump?
@leefiles
@leefiles 5 жыл бұрын
It has nothing to do with arduino. You can use them with arduino.....with a relay. You can find 3 or 5 volt reed relays at digikey. They sell everything, I don't know where they put them all. OR you can use any switching transistor. Remember to use a diode to protect the arduino. But they cannot be directly driven by arduino.

look for solar pond pump on amazon/ebay under "pets". these are no-name generic pumps. You'll be taking a risk. I got lucky, the pump still works. They often run from 3 volts to 5 volts to 12 volts DC.

Not always true. I often buy good merchandise from China. I bought the Mini 6V-12V DC Brushless Small Water Pump Submersible Motor Pump 1.8M 230L which came from China and it so small, but very powerful. However, they sold out.
