My air beam tent sleeps 8, has a full standing height central area where people can get dressed, as well as two porches where shoes etc can be left. It cost us less than £1K. It packs away into the boot of the car, leaving the tow hitch free for towing a trailer and carrying our 5 bike rack simultaneously.

Thule is a global company making millions and producing hundreds of products. How on earth the Board, Designers, Researchers, Product Development et al thought this POS was a good idea at that price point is beyond me. Also the guy on the video is the worst salesman I’ve ever seen. I’d rather throw $4k out the window.

The concept is great 👏🏻 but my question to Thule is, how do you get in or out when it’s pouring with rain, without getting the inside wet, as all the doors are unsheltered. The price is somewhat steep for what you get, but being able to unpack/pack it up quickly and carry two kayaks on the roof rack is very appealing 👍🏻

All looked great until the €4k price tag. At €2.5k it competes with roof tents. €4k is valid, only if you need your roof for other cargo. Great idea, just saying they missed a trick with the pricing. No doubt it will sell, Thule products are superb, and always well made. As a matter of interest, where would you rather be if your car was stolen, asleep on the roof or asleep on the tow hitch?

I really like this, it gets you up off the ground . Maybe a little expensive but A trailer with a tent 14k. And if you are in California speed limit is 55 mph with one of those. Not with this though. Prices are crazy 90k for a truck, just plain nuts. 50k and for an RV that’s just built to last two years. This is cheap compared to those options and you don’t have to buy insurance for it.

I've been to campgrounds that have had gravel spread on the site or that have compacted, hard, and uneven ground from over-use. One time I spent 45 minutes covering the area I wanted to put my tent on with leaves so it would have enough cushion to protect the tent bottom (and yes, I use a ground cloth/tarp) as well as be comfortable. With so many places requiring reservations, you don't know that before reserving.

@hi9580 OK, it has a hard bottom and a frame. Couple pieces of plywood and a set of screw on legs would take care of that. Otherwise, it's another fabric tent. The hitch mount and frame look good (presumably you can level it on a sloping pitch) but for EUR4000 its very small to holiday in, and very bulky to store! I can't help but think it would be better to lose the folding upper frame and replace it with an airbeam style tent so it is more like a trailer tent with a raised level bed area and an awning off to one side. Perhaps noseweight is an issue

This & roof top tents are good for young whippersnappers but wait until you get older & wished you had a regular tent on the ground. Yes they’re good to be off the ground from crawley things & when you’re in a flood but nothing beats an old fashioned tent. I have a Springbar that I paid $3 at a thrift store. It was well used & it’s the best tent I’ve ever had. It’s easy to put up & down. Put the stakes down & it’s held up by 2 outside poles. It’s never gotten wet inside & have plenty of room with my Queen airbed inside a 11’x10’ tent. Just get a car topper to put your tent in along with other things. These tents are a disaster waiting to happen.

4 Thousand euros! No way. Good luck though, and I look forward to seeing some companies taking this example and adapting it. The concept has potential but it is only for smooth roads and not camping in rough country areas as it won't be stable enough with just the connection in the middle, going through rough stuff that throws a car around a bit, like getting onto a beach, will produce side to side motion that will twist it off the mount. I would have liked a tent that has an inflatable frame that can plug into a power adapter from a car and auto-inflate or a more innovative aluminium frame that can extend a bit higher.

So how do I get a license plate for it? Or do I take mine off and have to stick it on this since it's blocking the one on the car. I'm just not sure I understand the point of this thing..

As a camper, I would hardly call that a tent. A covered camp bed maybe. If it's a tent, it is the equivalent of a fifty dollar, 2 person, pup tent. I suspect this one cost more than $50 bucks.

Just try to take all the blankets and clothing from that camper when its raining cats and dogs ...You would have to buy an awning and other stuff for this tent just to use..Very cool idea but the price is out of ths world not including a awning and excesseries....

Sad, many new cars allows only 50kg hitch weight - especially electric cars in Germany 😢

wonder if this works with wrangler and spare wheel on the back (more distance between tent and hitch required)

Just get a hitch extender. Jeeps have a strong enough frame to accept this weight even when it extends an extra foot towards the rear. Many compact cars have a maximum tongue weight of 150 pounds.

I have watched several videos featuring this product. I have looked at a number of Thule camping products. I generally like what Thule does with racks and mounts. I think they bought another company as a first step into tents. I guess they did not retain the best engineers or designers from that company. This and their other products range from just plain dumb ideas to good idea executed poorly. I live in North America so maybe we have different camping problems to solve but I just don’t get it.

This thing would be filthy, wet and not usable in anywhere you have dirt or rain. The sides practically fold inside with it open to elements, for wet conditions that’s a no no. For dirt it’s a huge no no.

Just buy a nice ground tent and call it a day. There is absolutely no way this thing is practical, especially for such a ludicrous price.

Given the hitch system's craftsmanship of this tent system. 650.00 is more than reasonable. 4,000.00 is insane who are they kidding here? Ill stick with my Marine Corps Isomatt, 3-tiered sleep system and my Tarp. Forget a tent. Tents are for pansies and extreme weather crazies.
