Hi, thank you for your video! Used it the past couple of months when the expansion plug in my son's base R56 came out and made an awful mess of everything. Just got the head reassembled today and will be getting the car running in the next week or so (hopefully). And as one retired AF to another (you've got the vibe.. and the shirt): Aim High.

Glad to be of help! So this was your first R56 cylinder head rebuild? Don't forget to reset your adaptations and pre lube the engine before starting.
@richmr2174 Жыл бұрын
@@superk4562 I've checked the Bentley manual and googled about pre-lube endlessly. The Bentley manual for changing out the oil pump just says fill with oil and go. What do you recommend?

In that case, you disable the fuel (pull fuse 46) and ignition, and crank the engine.

Alongside ensuring the vacuum pump bore aligned, it is also important to ensure that the eccentric shaft sender unit bore is aligned as well. Aligning the vacuum pump bore will, in most cases, ensure the eccentric shaft bore is also aligned. Both can leak and quite often do after a rebuild where the bearing bracket has been removed and the procedure for realignment hasn't been followed.

quick question... why put the eccentric shaft at minimal lift? I am rebuilding a head now however this part worries me.
@superk45622 ай бұрын
@@CRookedGriNN #1 reason, that is what the BMW technical manual says to do. After you put the head back on, make sure to clear all adaptations. This includes VANOS, valve lift, and fuel / air ratio. As soon as you power up the DME the first time, it will automacally run the eccentric shaft motor through a cycle to verify closed loop control.

Hi, thanks for this video, it clarified a few steps that are kinda taken for granted on the manual. Just two questions: 1- did you pre-tension the exhaust camshaft when disassembling too? 2- you mentioned in a comment that N engines tend to drop valve seats after valve job. What does it mean exactly? Risk of major failure? Thanks!
@superk456218 күн бұрын
The tech manual doesn't call for pre-tensioning of the exhaust camshaft during removal, so no. I can't post pictures here; run a web search for valve seats and you'll get plenty of images. If any valve seat drops (4 per cylinder) you'll be running on 3 cylinders, so yes, major damage. And there is the possibility of the seat breaking into multiple pieces (I've seen it), causing massive damage to the piston, cylinder head, and cylinder.

@@MichaelGibbs Don't!!! If you've got the head off, you'll want to install the deepee SBI valve seats. N Series engines tend to drop valve seats after valve work or if the engine is over heated.

On the cylinder head, the only difference is the N16 has a plug where the oil pressure switch is located on the N12.
