Components Used:
6-Pin Transformer: Salvaged from an old charger circuit board. This transformer is used to step up the voltage from the input side to the output side.
2N3055 Transistor: A powerful NPN bipolar junction transistor (BJT) used as a switch to drive the transformer.
100 Ohm Resistor: Used to limit the base current to the transistor.
3.7V Battery: A lithium-ion battery typically found in smartphones or other portable devices.
AC RGB DOB: A Direct On Board (DOB) LED module designed to run on AC voltage.
Circuit Description:
Power Supply: The circuit is powered by a 3.7V lithium-ion battery.
Transformer Connection: The 6-pin transformer is connected such that its primary winding is connected to the collector of the 2N3055 transistor. The secondary winding of the transformer is connected to the AC RGB DOB.
Transistor Switching: The 2N3055 transistor acts as a switch. Its emitter is connected to the negative terminal of the battery, and its collector is connected to one side of the primary winding of the transformer.
Base Drive: A 100 Ohm resistor is connected between the positive terminal of the battery and the base of the 2N3055 transistor. This resistor limits the current flowing into the base of the transistor, ensuring it operates correctly without damage.
Operation: When the circuit is powered, a small current flows through the 100 Ohm resistor into the base of the 2N3055 transistor. This causes the transistor to switch on, allowing a larger current to flow from the collector to the emitter. This current flow through the primary winding of the transformer induces a magnetic field.
Voltage Step-Up: The changing current in the primary winding induces a higher voltage in the secondary winding of the transformer due to electromagnetic induction. This higher voltage is sufficient to power the AC RGB DOB, causing it to light up.
Functionality:
This mini inverter effectively converts the low DC voltage (3.7V) from the lithium-ion battery into a higher AC voltage suitable for powering the AC RGB DOB. The transistor acts as a switch to create an oscillating current through the transformer's primary winding, which is then stepped up to a higher voltage in the secondary winding.
Applications:
This simple inverter circuit can be used in small-scale applications where a low voltage DC source needs to be converted to a higher voltage AC source.
