When I was in high school, we were nearing the end of marching band season, and we were waiting in line for our turn to march in a parade. For whatever reason, I turned my sousaphone upside down, and out of the bell came a roll of marching charts from a few seasons prior. Funny enough, I never noticed a problem with the sound of it. That instrument had been serviced in between that season and them falling out of it. Methinks someone didn't deserve a paycheck.

I know this was nine years ago but I think I figured out why the first valve is flat: in 1953 the rockerfeller foundation changed the tuning frequency of music from 432hz to 440hz, so if that instrument was made before 1953, it was manufactured to be tuned to a lower frequency than today's standards!

Not a surprising result what with the clown bell on there. Similar face planting can be observed on things like old timey Mellophones. Actually, with the right mouthpiece...hmm. I still kinda want one, but I'm an idiot. Did you ever try to play without the bell attached? I'm guessing if it's even reasonably tuned for 22", then no-bell might throw it all the way into D, but maybe it could play in tune with itself.
@Markworth6 жыл бұрын
So I got one of these because I am a masochist. I like it a lot, but I would never subject other players to this in an ensemble (or even a duet). At the first bend out of the valve block, you gain ~.400" bore in something like 6-9" of tubing. Nothing does that for a reason. Forget the bell. Game over for intonation right there. The demonstrated octave can be played in tune with an alternate fingering on the middle Bb (23). All concert G harmonics are totally buggered. Everything between low concert Ab and first pedal Eb is non-existent unless the bell is removed. Pedal concert Eb will play as a false tone on 0 and adding the appropriate fingerings gives you the rest of the sequence in 4th valve territory. This phenomenon also extends to the double pedal range. First pedal Bb does not play in tune on 13, however. You can play the bass solo from The Chain with no 4th valve on a 9' Bb horn. lol
@heribertopinzon8825 жыл бұрын
@@Markworth i'm seriously thinking of buying one, i'm not a brass player but i'd love to have something like this, looks cool to me; wondering if there's any way of fixing its tunning issues tho, since i'd like to play with other people
@Markworth5 жыл бұрын
@@heribertopinzon882 The octave compression is just inherent to the design. There's nothing you could do that would be effective or worth bothering. But hey. It's a hell of a wall hanger and at sub-$350, it's hard to say no. If you're not even a brass player, you're going to have an extra hard time playing anything meaningful on it.
