@@johnnysweekends hi, l have a question, does your mini split shuts off automatically once the desired temperature is reached? Thank you
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends Ай бұрын
No they dont really ever shut off, they just spool way down and then power draw is minimal to maintain the set temp. Inverter mini splits dont shut off but are way quieter and more efficient. Only if turned off, sleep mode or not enough power will the unit power off. You can set timers as well to have a schedule for on and off. I turn mine on and off all the time or depending what im doing if solar is plugged back in I have it set to come on when there is enough sun for start up.

I just purchased an EG-4 12k mini-split to go on the back of our motorhome. I chose the other option, the 28.5 SEER-2 model as the DC voltage coming from the solar array racked on the roof of my MH is too high for this unit (399voc). I wanted the higher efficiency AC only unit as I'll be running off the inverter, off-grid most of the time. I have 4,400 watts of solar panels, so I have enough solar power to run the 120v mini-split and charge my 320ah 48v battery at the same time. My inverter will run directly off solar, with no batteries in the loop, so if my battery is full, my mini-split will run directly off of inverted solar power, leaving the battery topped off until the sun goes down.

@johnnysweekends Жыл бұрын
1280 watt hours is not much and you never get full spec. So that would give you about 1150 watt hours of power give or take depending on the energy draw. And if the mini split is drawing a 1000 watts that’s only a hour or so. Plus inverter loss. So about one hour on that. But it needs at least 90v dc which seems a pinch more is better closer to 100v or a 110v ac power source.

When I got the 9k EG4 heat pump, I thought it would be DC solar ready. However, even though the labeling on the outside unit talks about solar, there appears to be no terminals on the outdoor unit to accept DC solar. Since I have microinverters which output AC solar, I mounted a combiner box (main lug panel) next to the heat pump outdoor unit. So, the solar lands in the panel and the heat pump lands on a breaker in the panel too. The truth is, in a way this is better than having solar dc go to the heat pump unit. I was never sure if extra solar would back feed to the grid through tge heat pump. Should work great if I didnt kink any hoses. That part was tricky. I got a good hiss of air on the half inch line when I turned the allen key. But the quarter inch line didn't release much which worries me a bit.

I wonder if it's economical yet to consider the additional capital it would take for a 24,000 BTU unit to run on solar? It seems it makes a lot less sense in areas where the minisplit is going to run 24/7 from May to August, in really warm areas of Arizona, and Nevada where it's still over 85 degrees in the evenings, I know there are solar panels that produce over 700 Watts per panel now, but can a system like this along with the powerstation or batteries, come out to less than 2500.00 (excluding the minisplit of course) ?

The mini split is gonna be $1700 ish dollars alone. If you can find some 300-350 watt panels used that would be best way to save money. But batteries would be needed. But a 24k btu is also gonna be a 220v unit

@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends Жыл бұрын
In order to run this all day off only solar and batteries say 24/7 you would need a decent setup, like a 15k battery bank and a lot of solar to recharge that bank during the day. Almost two different setups. I run mine for about 10 hours or so when im in the garage doing stuff. But its two different systems. My Rv and the panels on the ground. Sorry it would be cheaper to find someone local. To many variables and cost and I dont have the time.

The mini split has its own controller !! So you plug the panels right into the mini. You wanna do series to hit higher voltage of up to about 350. Unless you split the array then parallel in. @johnnysweekends I am just making sure that I understand the way the unit operates. So, the unit is required to be plugged into a 120-volt outlet for its operation. Is that correct??? I am assuming the unit has no internal battery storage. Therefore, it needs to be plugged in just in case a cloud goes by. Is that correct???
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends Жыл бұрын
So it can be powered fully off of solar only. I have had it plugged in for the last 3 days and AC not connected. It will get enough power to turn on and run the fan about 7:50am and then about 8:20 enough solar will then kick the pump on and away it goes till about 6:30pm. Then shut down. Obviously days are getting shorter. And this is when powered from RV solar only. Now because of my yard the ground mount is different. Now when it comes to shade……so my RV has a series parallel string. So depending how much shade the unit will go from full power at 1050 watts which is about as much I have seen down to 300ish watts and still run the pump. So cold air is still blowing but not as much when fully powered. Now if it was plugged into AC it would draw as much as it could from solar as priority and if shade comes AC will be pulled to keep the unit running at max power or what ever the setting. It’s great. My garage is 78-80 on a hundred degree day. Which now I need to insulate it…lol. Over all I wish I did it last year but just was busy and forgot lol.

I have a similiar setup for a minisplit to cool my garage.. although the AC that powers the condenser come from the factory with the AC cord on the evaporator inside the garage connected to a wall outlet. Was getting it looked at cause there was an issue with a fan on the wall unit and they tried to tell me code required that i have an emergency disconnect on the external unit. .. but i see you're plugging yours directly from the condenser and a line must run through your wall to the evaporator to power it. Wwanted to bull my $1100 to run that disconnect which i declined.
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends Жыл бұрын
True if it was going inside it would need it’s own disconnect. But since this is a stand alone unit not powered by the house, well it changes the rules. And when I sell the house, the power cord will be wound up nice and disconnected and no solar cables will be plugged in. So it essentially will be a unfinished install. New owner will have to have someone wire it or they can plug it into a outside generator or…. We’ll ya know 😂

Not exactly sure what you mean… but I have a set of solar going directly into the mini and a AC cord coming from the AC connection point on the mini that is literally a cut outdoor extension cord so I can plug it into my trailer or the house or the DPU or a generator or… Lots of options to run it. One of the best things I did. I have a discount on them right now as well

I have the 24k BTU hooked up to my back yard fence mounted set up I came up with. But I’m running all solar. The L1 and L2 for two hots that I could run to a 240 volt breaker, I’m wondering if I could run to delta pros with a double voltage hub, or my smart home panel or a 30 amp outlet near the house.

@ColbyBlack oh ok you have a 220/240 volt mini. Mine is 120v Yes two DPs and DV hub will work but you will definitely suck some power unless you have solar dumping into both. 👍🏼

@@johnnysweekends If I set it up with all my solar going into my Bluetti battery bank (8k) (also have another 13.8 Zendure Battery Bank) Can it be run off DC output and also have it plugged in for AC so that it will charge the battery bank and then pull from AC when needed? Not sure if this makes sense but I have 3000w of solar now and am trying to figure out how to best use my panels by charging them and running the unit. Seems like it may be best to have 1500 watts to the unit and then run 1500w to the battery bank and also plug the unit into the batteries so that it won't run off any grid power. My solar does not go into the grid at all so just trying to figure a way to use all my soal and storage. Thanks!

@scottfreedom2012 unfortunately can’t power from bluetti dc out as it’s not enough power. 90v minimum. Hence combo of solar and also plugged into AC 110v outlet or hard wired works great. But solar during the day to power it and extra solar for battery storage! Or just cut the bills down gradually
@scottfreedom2012
@scottfreedom2012 3 ай бұрын
@@johnnysweekends Thanks kinda figured that would be the case. I’m fine with it but was trying to figure out how to maximize storage and running the unit. Maybe run 1500 watts to the unit and the rest to the battery and when its not enough solar it can just pull from ac outlet on battery. Either way it’s free power from the sun and can eventually help pay back investment. Right now just running a window air con unit and it just not as efficient. Again thanks!

So quick example. 103 degree day Comes on automatically at about 8:15am and shuts off at 6:30pm which that will shorten as the days shorten Almost 500sq ft garage Non insulated garage Non insulated garage door 10ft ceilings Now stays about 82-85 degrees all day. Verses it was normally 96-100 in there depending on the day. I’m insulting my garage door this week, with thermal barrier and adding the outside weather strip all the way around the door so will see how that does. Then eventually I’ll spray foam the inner walls here and there and that will help for both summer and winter. If I can keep it upper 70s in high outside temps and have it run for free from my RV..👍🏼👍🏼

Is this running straight from the solar panels or a lithium battery?
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends Жыл бұрын
Straight from panels. My Rv powers it or the ground panels. I play around but mostly the Rv. This comes with a Mppt solar controller built in. So when it hits a high enough voltage the fan kicks on then a little later it has enough and the pump kicks on and away it goes. It runs now with days getting shorter and the trees in the way from about 9am to 6pm ish. Which will continue to drop because of some shade issues

Quick question. You didn’t use batteries, how does solar energy saves ?
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends 4 ай бұрын
The solar panels simply power this as it has its own charge controller built in to supply power at the needed DC voltage. Once the sun comes up and voltage hits the spec it needs it starts working, sun goes down and it eventually shuts off. You can buy panels cheap and this could in every day heating or cooling with enough solar and eventually pay it self off and continue to supply heat or cooling for years. I have discounts as well

I wouldn’t recommend the rubber feet with those solid copper lines, eventually the lines will fatigue and crack due to the flex allowed by those rubber feet. Flexible rubber lines yes, copper no!
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends Жыл бұрын
Copper is not solid. It’s semi rigid and meant for vibrations. You have to bend them like crazy just to position them. The foot pads are pretty rigid in them selves but even with no concrete anchors it does move.

The direct solar gimmick doesn't change anything at all. I've been running 15000 btu on solar for the past 3 years, and didn't have to install dedicated panels for the unit (they power entire RV instead). Want to revolutionize the solar industry? Raise the pesky 22% efficiency of the solar panels.
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends Жыл бұрын
Good for you. I have installed systems larger than a Mega watt and more close to that, but dont see me bragging about it. This is simply for those looking for a nice solution especially if you want to heat or cool a space cheaper from either grid power or your own DC setup. And if you have a big rv siting on the side of your home, use the thing more than just a rv sitting there. Many places need permits even for diy, rv and trailers dont. Install all you want and now you have a mini power plant. Solar efficiency will get much better soon. 5 years it will be close to 40% maybe higher

The system that is powering the unit now is used as a example. You can easily buy large solar panels for cheap and if you wanted throw them on the ground and will easily do the same thing for cheap. And will heat and cool as soon as the sun hits the panels. Now where you live will determine if it’s worth it or not.
