Definitely one option to run the turbo drain in to the box. Great job

Hi Craig. Beautiful car. When I was building my turbo project, one thing I learned was how critical oil drainage from turbo to pan was. Having any restrictions at all can be problematic. Having a 90 degree bend will create issues. Sorry for saying this. I had to drill into the sump and weld a bung for a large -12 AN fitting. Now that was for a Garrett GT2871, so yours will be a bit smaller. However, having as straight and large as possible drain to sump is critical. Again, beautiful car and you have a new subscriber.

Hello Craig, thanks for the comment. Appreciate the message regarding the oil drain. The original T3 turbo fitted to the metro turbo was fitted with a tight 90 degree and therefore Ive pretty much copied the same idea with this GT17 turbo. So far soo good 🤞🤞. The only other option was as you said, to return the oil to the sump which was my original plan but I just didn’t want to drill my gearbox casing as it’s such a rare box. Hopefully it will continue to be problem free Craig. So far no signs of any smoke 🤞🤞

Hi Craig! (There’s something a bit frustrating about having two immaculate cars when I’m sure what you really want is a new from scratch project…) Best wishes to you and your family for a happy and successful new year buddy! 🙏👍

Thanks Phil. Your absolutely right. I’d love a MK2 RS 2000 resto project if I’m honest. Happy new year

@@performanceclassics1986 perfect choice Craig, back in the 1970s as an apprentice in a race/rally company I did some development work on RS 2000 cylinder heads for Ford AVO research centre at Dunton. (Alan Wilkinson was the research head in those days..) I also got to do the “before and after” 0-60 stopwatch time trials! Pretty breathtaking stuff! 😊👍

Could you utilise that blanking plate on the right side of the back of the gearbox (as looked at in this video) to drain the turbo oil? or was that where the oil pick up pipe went from the sump? Not too familiar with the layout sorry, just thinking out loud.
@performanceclassics1986
@performanceclassics1986 Жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely right that’s the oil pick up point and therefore wouldn’t work. Big shame really as this would make a nice neat option

Nice upgrades on the oil return. Could you if a electric fan instead of the one running off the engine because in the video the fan looks very close the the large pipes behide the fan?
@performanceclassics1986
@performanceclassics1986 Жыл бұрын
Yes this is something we are actually discussing at present because the fan is also a big power loss to the engine

@@performanceclassics1986 Would you go the traditional rad and lecky fans up front, or unconventional rad and fans in the boot space, vented down and out through suitably modified boot floor.. or.... use a lecky fan and custom rad combo under EACH inner wing area, mounted horizontally with air fed up and through front facing ducts and out vented A panels or through shark fin stamped louvres in the front wing tops?

Yeah. I was thinking the same about an electric fan. Good upgrade.

@@RawTopShot All very good ideas and certainly worthy upgrades but I just don’t want to modify the body this far. As time goes by, I’m becoming more tempted to return more areas of the car back to standard 🤣

I bet you’re glad you’re a bit OCD as the inside of that oil return pipe didn’t look healthy!

Hi Craig, I really hate to be that guy but I’d really like to do this swap. What’s the exact spec of your engine? Pistons bore size cams crank rods etc? Sorry I realise it’s a big old question but I’ve got a 1380 clubby and I want more power haha

I can't lie if that was my car the 'improvements' I'd be considering would be a second even bigger turbo in addition to the one already on the car, am I just mad? Yes. 😂

if I wanted to go crazy I'd try the supercharger and turbo combination, first seen on Lancia Delta Group B's I think; it's something MED scoffed at saying it was impossible, but there are cars out there that run both; I "think" the supercharger handles the low down pull whilst the turbo spins up, and with the SC doing all the low down torque stuff the turbo can be much larger and has plenty of time to spin up, so lag isn't an issue using a huge turbo. At some point in speed/boost the SC is disengaged (electric or mechanical clutch from crank) and the turbo is doing all the boost at upper rpm.

@@RawTopShot very interesting. My biggest challenge would be room. It is already soo very cramped under the bonnet. It’s a complete nightmare to work on 🤦‍♂️
