For the 3-phase connections on the turbine, using 4mm bullet connectors with heat shrink is ideal. It’s what I use on my ebike which has a similar 3-phase BLDC motor.

You need to use flux when soldering unless you like doing it the hard way. Soldering using only the flux in the solder only works for perfect circumstances. Giving the wires a light sand beforehand (for the worst cases) might also help. I find adding flux is usually enough to make most joints cooperative.

Keep a large blob of blutack in your soldering iron case for holding wires in place while you solder them and twist them together along their length before soldering, also the Milwaukee is OK for very occasional jobs but a TS101 or Pinecil V2 is far superior for bigger jobs. I'd also use adhesive lined heatshrink or apply a small amount of hot glue before heatshrinking in an environment like that.

Hi Cory, the three phase recifier in your smart phone schematic at 17:03 was different because the upper three rectifiers were SCRs instead of standard diodes. I once built a capacitor bank that had 12 x 200V 1000uF in parallel and 8 x SCRs to dump the energy in to whatever I was trying to obliterate... i mean spot weld. lol Also inside the wind turbine controller there is usually some kind of regulator and smoothing on the DC output, some also have an output for a brake on the turbine to stop it going nuclear in high winds :)

Hey Cory, I loved this video series. I use solder seal connectors to do sealed butt splices in DC wires. I've seen them up to about 6.0mm2. They go on with a heat gun and make a solid connection with solder in the joint and a glue seal at each end. I usually heat shrink over them for extra protection and I've never had one fail or ingest water.

Couple of tips from an amateur, fit a changeover switch as a break on the turbine three phase, for maintenance and preventing damage from over speeding during storms. My turbine is ac coupled to my victron microgrid via a gti. On victron world as croft one the turbine shows as a PV inverter with about 10 months of data. I actually live on an island as well 😊. Small turbines are not really worth the effort to install but they are visually pleasing. We run a ground mounted 8kw PV array as well, planning to add about 4kw more again ac coupled but vertically mounted as our December January gain is rubbish. Love your channel and the fact you are covering more hybrid and off grid content.

The other point which I forgot because I got distracted is in a DC coupled environment with Li you need to be careful of overcharge else the BMS will disconnect. Li are not as forgiving as Pb and AGM. The trad way to manage this would be diversion load controllers to a dump load resistor. However utilising Venus os large and node red you can run smart loads. I have got smart switches on the relay outputs of the cerbo that can run scenes and routines across multiple devices based upon circumstance. I know you have other people you work with who handle the control side of installs but there is very little content available for learners on node red and Venus os large out there. It would be nice to see some coverage of the control side in the future. All of this is more critical in off grid as hybrids can just dump overcharge to grid, PV charge controllers just stop flowing at SOC setpoints but wind never stops. You can see why most off grid installs end up DIY, getting a standard sparky to put their head around the complexities and be up to speed has been rare. The uptake on hybrid systems is starting to change the market but when it is mostly system in a box like growatt there is a way to go yet.

Ive done that experiement with windmills. You want to match a low KV brushless motors (drone motors are high kv rated, so they produce lots or RPM to keep a vtol in flight)) at 3x the input power to what you want to produce, the fisher and paykel smart drive motor is an excellent example, the 36 pole version can produce 150v dc (open circuit) with very little rotation. Thats a different story when you put a load on it though, and then they start cogging because they are capable of producing a lot of torque they also produce a lot of brake force, which is what happens when you apply a load to them

So nice to watch your content, the first self-ironic minutes with the cuts to the movie killed me 😂 However, at 10:38, if you want to easily solder cables, just dip them into some flux, solder them with a high power iron and somewhat wind-shielded. After soldering, wipe the connections with some alcohol to remove the flux. This will make for some really nice joints. 👌

We get regular power cuts so i've currently got a baby system setup and not connected to the mains, so i treat it like a generator that when full gives me bonus loads of washing/dishwasher for free. One question though, my charge controllers for wind have big dump load resistors for when the battery is full to burn off any energy, is there something similar on that setup that we didn't see?

Hi Cory. That turbine wont produce much, since its one of the generic china made ones. Its to small to do 500w, looking at the physics side of things. If the 500w rating is correct, its at 12 meters per second of steady wind. To get the wind you need, you need to rais that mast way higher. Around 10m above anything within a 100m radius. I'd install a manual 3 pole switch to short out the turbine leads to completely brake it, incase of emergency. Best would be to do this with a normally closed 3 phase relay, so it shorts when the onboard grid fails. a freewheeling turbine will destroy itself without a brake. The chargecontrollers are trash. Open it up, its filled with sand instead of a real mppt. If you really want to utilise wind and get real useable power, Get a Heli 2.0 windsafe from istabreeze, 48v, on a 10m mast with guide wires, auto brake with the relay i mentioned, big three phase bridge rectifier and hook it up to a Midnite Classic mppt controller. This controller allows you to dump excess power to a dummy load to regulate it that way. These controllers also allow you to make and adjust a power curve, to match the load the the powercharacteristic of the turbine. You need a 3m diameter rotor at 8ms to get 600w from wind. Everytime the windspeed doubles, you get 4 times the energy. Same with blade length, double the size is 4x the power. Size and mast height is everything.

I don't think you'll get anything out of that wind turbine. You've got a 48v version which is more suited to lead acid batteries. You've got lithium which voltage sits around 55v. The charging protocol has to be around 5v above the battery voltage. So in this instance you would only start charging once the turbine is pumping out 60v, which is at it's max. I've learned the hard way with these things, the most recent being one with 6ft blades and a £2k invoice. I live at 400m above sea level in the Highlands and didn't get an amp! Anyway, I love watching your videos and there's always something new to learn.

10:32 2 Different metals? Wuh? Either the solder flows onto both, or the solder connection isn't done properly, like if the turbine used nasty ass CCA wire, the solder isn't going to flow onto the wire if the copper coating breaks away, which it does while soldering. Annoying really, cause given the space constraints, there's not really anything else you could have done. Like I'd have use Wago's but trying to insulate them in that tight space would incur it's own issues.
