I grew up painting miniatures with the only example of them being the images on the boxes by 'eavy metal. So I thought this was the only proper way that the models should look. Now I have ended up with an army that half of it is product of trial and error and the rest is fully edge highlighted madness. I have reached a point that I get PTSD when the time comes to edge highlight something and get OCD if I don't do it.

Came to the comment section to post pretty much exactly this. I had a long pause and when I came back there is now KZbin full of tutorials and washes everywhere. To put my OCD into perspective I got to the point where I could “speed paint” marine squads with blended power armor and full edge highlights. With the details on the modern marines it seems a little silly (especially for chaos with metal trim), but the 3rd edition kits really stand out when edged.

"They can't not edge highlight." Rarely have truer words inspired such genuine laughter because GW love themselves some edge highlighting, so much so that some of the paint jobs you see seem to have ignored more traditional highlights and gone straight to the edge highlight. Also, its okay to hate Steven; he's a Chaos Space Marine so he's used to, and he probably hates you as well. Also also, Chaos Sparkle Marines need to be a thing; you were a lot more... let's say restrained in your word usage because my first thought was that they'd become vampires from Twilight.

I think the thing with 'eavy Metal is, despite being master painters, they have to create a style that can be emulated by anyone, regardless of skill. So, rather than creating true color/tonal variation by blending different shades across a surface, they create an eye-tricking faux variation through strong edge highlights and liberal black-lining. The irony here is that, while anyone can emulate the style, the style itself is stagnating, as you can't create true variation just following this method and, hilariously, the effects that 'eavy Metal create are not possible solely with the Citadel paint range. The precision of their edge highlights can only be achieved through the use of additives such as flow aid (arguably adding shades to their paints, but doesn't work for all their paint jobs) and actual inks, which Citadel does not produce.
@TheRunesmythe5 жыл бұрын
@@AlarienEvenstar I'm not denying there's a certain logic and validity to your reasoning (because it makes total sense) but here's where I come up against the proverbial wall; in a good many GW painting tutorials, both written word and video, they reference and even demonstrate the more "tradtional" (for lack of a better word) technique of highlighting using layers and sell a line of paint specifically for the purpose of layering. Then they turn around and hamstring themselves by relying ridiculously on edge highlighting. The real rub, at least for me, is that edge highlighting can produce a decent look and really help to cleanly pop details, keeping the crisp and distinct, when used with layering; without using layering though, the result looks kind of like what you'd expect from a child's coloring book where they've traced a darker line of color along the inside perimeter of the image then colored the rest in a much lighter tone.
@capuchinseven5 жыл бұрын
AlarienEvenstar what also needs to be considered is that GW isn’t just about painting, it’s also about gaming and building/fielding armies. If I’m building a new army that I need to start playing my aim when painting is a decent job but in a reasonably quick time. I’m not spending a week painting a model when I have another 50 models to paint. GW style of painting is often a quick but effective job, not every model is meant to win Golden Demon.

It's a great hobby to get into, and I've enjoyed my many years of painting and terrain creation. If you don't like the sci-fi aspect, Age of Sigmar also exists which is really cool as well. I'm definitely 2 years too late but they said the team based the trim with a 50/50 mix of liberator gold and dryad bark to aid coverage. They then shaded it with agrax and shaded round the rivets with wildwood or 50/50 skaven blight and black. They then cleaned it up with liberator gold, highlighted with 50/50 lib and stormhost then did extreme highlight of stormhost

FYI, the satin sheet that's visible on darker colors in official GW photos may be due to a very light coat of satin (not flat, not gloss) varnish after the model is painted. A while back I switched to satin varnishes rather than flat varnishes. I noticed immediately that the overall sheen of my models that used citadel paints began to look more like GW photographs. I suspect one reason they use a satin varnish even though 'eavy metal models are made for display and product photography is to tie together the surface refractivity of different colors of paint so that everything matches the same sheen.
@slimjim74115 жыл бұрын
If you really look at 'eavy metal mini's you can see they use different clears on different sections. You can sort of control the light on the model if you spray with satin, then go over shadow area's with a matte varnish, and then do edges in a gloss. It sort of exaggerates the normal light of the room making the edges seem to pop more.

I saw a great trick one time when putting something like gold or white over black, if you put a layer of another slightly lighter color over the black first, then put your final coat on, it goes on way easier. Like if you use a light brown before you put the gold on, then it doesn't take as many layers

You can tell that 'Eavy Metal varnished their Steven also, most likely a Satin varnish. It tends to subdue the edge highlights, making them less gaudy. I tend to highlight up very high on my models because the Testors Dullcote brings them down a notch. I'd love to see a video where you varnish Steven and then compare it to the Eavy Metal CSM.
