Commissioned shortly after outbreak of war in 1939, the heavy cruiser Blücher was lost in first mission - occupation of norway in April 1940. To this day, the wreck is laying on the bottom of Oslofjord in 90 meters depth.

I live close to Oscarsborg Fortress and I have visited it several times. Blücher approached the fortress with all guns pointing to their 12 o-clock positions and showing no signs of agression, as Germany had not yet declared war on Norway. Colonel Eriksen, the fortress commander, still opened fire (and with hindsight, he did the right thing) with the 3 Krupp 28cm cannon, crippling the ship at close range. Blücher tried to pass the fortress on the eastside, but the hidden torpedoes got her. RIP

Was hat dein Grossvater dir berichtet ? Soweit☮🙏

For all those historical amateurs.....Norway was important to supply the German industry with swedish iron ore. The Brits wanted to cut the supply line and reached Narvik on the same day as the Germans. Moral aspects never count, if Anglo-Americans are involved. The German OKM was miserable, a lack of tradition, the German sailors fought bravely and competent. With a better German maritime leadership some of the losses could have been avoided.

The two 28 cm krupp cannons from the main battery fired at Blücher at a range of 1400 meters. And immidiantlay after that, the Kopås and Husvik battery with started to fire at the ship. They fired about 30-50 shell that hit it mid-ship. And the shells fired from Oscarsborgs main battery and from the Husvik and Kopås battery caused fire that ignited the fuel and ammo on the ship. And when Blücher came into the line of sight of the torpedo battery, two whitehead-torpedoes was fired.

@@enalche2 The initial post point out the fact there were troops with added Gestapo elements aboard, the inital post does not say it was a nazi ship. Does that not matter more? What you say is true, but is splitting hairs. The ship and it mission was obviously and clearly directed by the nazi regime under control of a certain agressive babaric leader. As far as I know, the flags onboard were even replaced to underline this. That some where not hard core active nazis is true, but changes little in practical terms. They still invaded others, both Nazi-Germany and Russia. When people write "communist divisions or nazi-german ships", I think they do that to reflect the system or regime governing the forces and their strategical objectives. The regime and its system did make and effort to affect and form the country and its people. You could even argue a point that a tools is not German or Russian, just a tool. And perhaps in a philosofical meaning you are correct as the tool has no mind and is not aware, but in practical terms I think it is safe enough to say it is okay to label tools so.

I guess this is was the nazi's get for their arrogance and underestimating the power of their shore batteries. The torpedoes were a major shock for the KM as only the Norwegians knew about them. Both types of weapons were old, but they were up to the task of blasting that warship to the bottom of the fjord. At least I think so.
@Charlesputnam-bn9zy
@Charlesputnam-bn9zy 4 жыл бұрын
The guns were Krupp-made. And named respectively ''Moses" and ''Aaron''. And the torpedoes were Austro-Hungarian-made. What could be more ironic ? There is. Blucher was the Prussian feld-marschal who came to the rescue of Iron Duke Wellington at Waterloo in 1815. In 1915 at the naval battle of Dogger Bank, the Kaiser-Bill's navy heavy cruiser ''Blucher" was Royal-Navy-sunk. In 1940 'dolf's kriegmarine heavy cruiser ''Blucher'' was sunk by Norway, Britain's Ally. The name Blucher was ill-fated for its carriers, even post-mortem. Google the names of Ebehardt Blucher feld-marschal, and soviet field-marshal Blucher (Blyukher)

@RealPesto Blücher was badly damaged by 28cm and 15cm guns, but the torpedoes sealed her fate. One hit near the first 20,3cm turret, the second in the engine room. Blüchers steering system collapsed and the cruiser anchored.
@Dingsrud
@Dingsrud 3 жыл бұрын
First 28cm hit was a near miss. Second cut the steam supply to Turbinenraum eins and some of the generators. The 15cm hits made a lot of damage amidship and dissrupted the steering control from the bridge to the rudder. From now on the ship had to be manuvered from the rudder control room. First torpedo hit in Kesselraum eins (boiler room 1). The second torpedo a few meters further aft im Turbinenraum 2/3. The fate of the ship was besieged when a magasine for 10,5cm blew up in Kesselraum 2 an blew a grate hole in the bottom of the ship.

The Blucher was an antique by 1940 standard. The British naval attache was invited to inspect the ship, and he pointet out that she was poorly copartementalized in the engine and boiler area. The ship was fired on by 28cm and 15cm coastal batteries and sunk by whitehead torpedoes. The 28cm guns might have been old but Bofors had delivered modern shells to them. The instructions and decisions by the military and political leadership in norway had been at best inept leading up tp the 9th of April. The fortress was only effective because the commander didn't fire warning shots and didn't inform his superior, which had surrendered.
