It's really disappointing that supposed professionals didn't even bother to carry out the most basic diagnostics to identify the problem with the engine, rather than just replace the entire unit! Your video was truly excellent, thank you for taking the time to record, edit and publish your work. As a professional mechanic, there may have been a bit more at play on this one. Labor rates, parts, and turnaround time quite possibly could have been a reason to replace it. If you're on vacation for 2 weeks, and it's gonna take 5 weeks to fix, lots of people would just say junk that one, install a new one. I believe he said this was a warranty replacement by Cummins too. They might have had something to do with that.

Dean Marsh do you think an rv generator would survive alright driving a welder? The gen has more than enough wattage but the inrush current will be very high as you start and stop welding
@isettech5 жыл бұрын
@@ghettobikelife8833 Consumer grade generators tend to top out at the nameplate rating with maybe a 5 second overload for starting an AC. The inverter might not have the power headroom needed for welding. Inverters do not like highly reactive loads. For a welder, it should run a small unit that runs on 120Volt, but it won't run a 240 volt unit. The Eco mode on many portable generators is unable to cope with a high current start without turning off Eco mode first. I prefer commercial Diesel generators instead of consumer grade stuff as they run all day at 80% load. (example a genie light tower running 4 lights uses 1000 Watts per lamp + the ballast load. The generator is rated for 6KW. Reading the specs on the engine/generator combo inside, it can take 120% overload for 10 minutes. It has a 30A 240V outlet.

I think the reason for the "pop" on the intake is simpler than the one you suggested. With the exhaust valve not opening, the exhaust stroke would effectively be another compression stroke so when the intake valve opens, the cylinder is under pressure again.

That is a great generator. Here in Scotland I fitted a UK spec Dometic TEC 30D to my RV (have never even started the original twin cylinder Kohler, with petrol being about £1.30 a litre, or about $6.40/gal) It is a Hatz diesel and the controller looks very similar. Mine started with zero hours, now it has 518 on the clock. Mine needed a new fuel pump to get it going, it later needed a new exhaust pipe and a new air filter as it sucked in it's own exhaust from the split in the pipe. Under partial load it only uses about hslf a litre per hour and on a rainy day it can dry the ground under the RV. Mine's in a basement compartment with a vent at the side and bottom, makes it very slightly quieter.

1/2 liter an hour ? Of diesel ? How much does diesel cost ? I was thinking , that generator should power one , maybe two inverter drive 12,000 BTU ductless mini split A/C - heat pumps . Wyr God bless
@byebye97855 жыл бұрын
It's rated for 2.5KW at 0.7 litres per hour at that and cuts out quickly at a little over 2.5KW. It'll certainly power one 12,000BTU split system, I've never had an inverter drive air conditioner, so don't know how intelligent they are, if they can be linked and programmed not to run at full power at the same time, then certainly. Once when driving from one campsite to another, my youngest daughter turned on 4 electric heaters, about 5KW in total, just by chance the thermostats were all clicking on and off at different times and the generator managed. For 2 heaters on a low setting and the battery chargers it's supplying about 1.5KW and using about 0.5 litres per hour, diesel is about £1.34ish, although I could use duty free diesel at about 70p a litre last time I checked, although I wouldn't fill up at a truck stop if the RV itself was diesel powered, mine's not so there's no risk of being harassed by the taxman. One other interesting feature the generator has (mine's an old 2008 model) is it can be daisychained to another TEC 30D for 5KW of power. I'm not sure how I ever found the money for one, I couldn't afford two, anyway I haven't seen it mentioned in the specifications for newer models, so I don't know if that feature is even still supported. If you have many thousands to spend on a generator, I'd check out some of the Cummins Onan water cooled generators. I saw one in a health service semi trailer parked in a supermarket carpark that I had no idea was even there when stood beside it, until a service engineer opened up the compartment it lived in. In the same place, I can hear mine from half way across the car park!
@wyrtwister42605 жыл бұрын
@@byebye9785 So , maybe $ 25 a 24 hour day , for you to run your generator ? We have a 25 kw trailer mounted diesel generator at work . Would love to have it , too . :-) Thanks , :-) Wyr God bless
@byebye97855 жыл бұрын
Yes that's about right. Your worst case scenario is about $18/24h in California, or $12.45 at about $2.80/Gal at full load for 24H. I bet it'd be less than $10 a day in quite a few states, the AC will use less power at night (or during the day up north in winter as a heat pump - which they're really good at). Back in 2011 at a house I used to live in, I bought a 12KW 415V 3 phase generator. A lot of businesses and almost zero homes have multi phase power here in the UK and back then 415V 3 phase equipment, costing many thousands new could be had second hand on eBay for a few hundred. I got a 4 Ton Hydraulic 4 post lift, compressor, a Lincoln Electric MIG welder and a Lincoln Invertec plasma cutter, an added bonus was I could get 240V off one of the phases for the house when winter weather knocked out the power. It had weatherproof housing and all it's doors locked, but it was really expensive, so I bought an old airport laundry trailer to mount inside.

Ok now that I've had a cup of coffee I should give you some more information. The engine itself runs great, water cooled, kept up with oil changes and always run it under a load. 16000 BTU air conditioner, microwave, battery charger, TV. I have replaced the mother board three times now. Generator sits in a sound proof box and has a blower to vent heat. I have pulled the unit from the boat four times and had a mechanic go thru it thoroughly and I encounter the same problem every time. A generator will run great for about 4 to 5 hours and then it just quits producing electricity. Thank you in advance for any help or advice you can give me on this until.

Have the same generator on my 2017 Winnebago View. The orange wire is the temp sensor. Looks like the sensor end is cut off as the metal tip goes into the air filter housing. Replaced the solenoid and all good now. Great video for my next problem with this generator!

I had the same thing happen to an Onan V-twin on a Miller generator. The initial oil gummed up the valve guides because it hadn't been run in a long time. The valve hung up and the rocker popped off. Some brake cleaner down the valve guide loosened them up and cured the problem.

Thanks for the video. I just purchased a Genset MG 13/10 AA generator that only had 52 hours on it since it was purchased in 1990. It was a backup generator on a chicken farm and when I was running it to test it, I noticed the same white smoke. It has a Ruggerini RD 270 two cylinder diesel engine which is bullet proof and considering the low hours, I wasn't sure if the filter was blocked or the injectors were dirty and the fuel wasn't burning. Since it was a backup generator and was placed under load once warmed up, I don't think the issue is glazing. I will hook it up to some heaters and let it run as I suspect it's just soot buildup in the exhaust as the smoking looks identical to what you showed in your video.

Sad that we all want smaller and smaller stuff but yet do not appreciate that it comes at a price..... I'm reminded of Cellular Phones..Initially....They were HUGE! But everyone wanted "the "smallest"...and even went in bars and bragged how "small theirs was..." (ouch) Then it all got daft...and the phones got bigger and bigger until most "cool" people are now walking around with phones at a size that would have been laughed at a few years back.... Crazy world? This Generator is the equivalent. Great video. Shows us all the reality of miniaturisation. In many situations: It doesn't work. If that unit had been but ....a foot wider.... it could have worked comfortably within its own specs..... Daft design. Inevitable result.

Just don't understand why some units are made that just seem to have such small oil capacities. I don't have the development skills to figure out how much it should have, but damn, 1.1qt in the sump just doesn't give you a lot of 'mistake space'. I put an outboard one gallon tank on my gennie, 25kW Generac Diesel, and just let it 'overflow' back into the crankcase. Gives the engine the extra gallon in capacity while keeping the oil level at the same place. I also put in a sight glass in the piping to allow a 'running check' on the oil level. Another Great video, Michael in Colorado.

I'm sorry but that isn't going into regen . There aren't any temp or pressure probes before and after the "catalytic' converter muffler. If it did have one with that much coke soot it would have to be baked in an over than vacuumed out before going back into service. Pressure differential would be too great and throw a code. I'm a Caterpillar engine mechanic and have experience with regen systems.

The muffler is all oiled up from the lack of lift on the exhaust valve as the nut backed off. It took 360 hours for it to finally stop running. Exhaust temp getting lower and lower as the hours clicked on. Poor diagnosis is common in this field. Costing consumers big $$

Nice unit to sell to a trucker if nothing else. I'm a bit disappointed it's not a 3-phase.
@chrisw14625 жыл бұрын
Nah... this thing needs a home that will RUN it.. at least 50% load for most of it's operating time. The only practical use I can think of would be as a small construction site generator. Maybe a solar system backup generator - if the batteries drop a bit low, a 3 kW generator would be just about perfect to charge them up and supply power until the sun comes back. Even there you'd have to use it, under load, once every month or two to keep it running well. Most RV's don't draw enough power consistently, and a trucker would use a lot less. They'd be better off with one of those tiny 2 kW models.
@84gssteve5 жыл бұрын
Great stuff! I love getting machines like this, its the ultimate bargain! My guess is they took it in for a service and someone forgot to tighten the rocker adjustment properly and the exhaust backed off. Probably later diagnosed the intake kickback as burnt valves when it was actually "jake braking" out the intake since the exhaust system was no longer part of the plumbing! All the orange RTV in the exhaust pipe is the tell to me.....anytime I see RTV beyond a small bead or skim, its a sure sign of an amateur being involved....doubly so if its orange RTV since that stuff is rarely used by the OEM.
