What makes the metallic highlight so key is it implies where the rust has come off. Hard edges - especially outer edges - tend to get banged around, so the rust flakes off. This would also be the case on joints or between the folds of armor plates, from rubbing against one another. Pistons, if they're still functional, should always be very clear of rust.
