RM said he wanted this song to be like a festival they wanted to share with ARMY, a celebration for us. Incorporating South African beats, dance moves ( Gwara Gwara). costuming and background with traditional Korean.. If you notice at the beginning the sun is rising and on the table is a globe turned to South Africa and a ship on the other end. During the song the sun rises, the moon comes out and the sun goes down but never sets and at the end, the globe is turned towards South Korea. The message is, our ship (music) sails continuously around the globe, the sun never sets in our world as there is always the sun shining somewhere upon an ARMY, they are the light of our lives. Pretty cool right? and why we cherish BTS.

Pam injapan Yes so cool! Yuji and totally got the festive impression. We had no idea about the South African motifs when we watched this, but now I've read/watched more info and learned about Gwara Gwara and the globe, etc. It's such an interesting mix of influences: EDM music from Europe and US, South African dance and backdrops, plus Korean outfit and lyrics. I guess it shows how BTS is both grounded in their identity but free to explore the world. It's exhilarating concept really, and I am glad they delivered in the EDM style that we can all dance to 👏😍

Something a lot of fans have theorized is that they got inspiration from criticism they’ve gotten in the past. For example, you see RM with face filters in the mv and once during a livestream, a viewer told him not to wear face filters anymore. The same happened with V and his glasses and you see him wearing glasses for most of the video. Some other possible ideas, “there are too many members” -> members are multiplied through editing and “kpop is too weird”-> makes a really weird video. Also, “Running Man” is a reference to a cast member, Haha. He gave V a shout out in his song so BTS did the same! It might also be a reference to being crowded in airports. In the past the members, especially RM & Suga, faced criticism for being hip hop idols and this is their response to that! They couldn’t care less since they know who they are and what they want so now they’d rather have a festival with ARMY!!! :) also, they used South Korean beats and a dance they incorporated that they’ve been bringing up is called “gwara gwara”! BTS always manage to break expectations and they’ve never been afraid. Anytime when they have had an idea that they believe in, they chase it without fear. That’s why ARMYs love them and believe in them! We trust their talent and their passion. We trust them to say what needs to be said and their fearlessness and ambition inspires us. Also, they often speak to fans as “peers.” Check out the lyrics to songs like Fire and Not Today!! And in maaaany of their B-side tracks like Tomorrow, Bapsae, and Paradise. BTS are very open with who they are and what they believe in:) Sorry for writing so much and I really enjoyed this analysis!!! I enjoy these kinds of videos and reactions a lot because it’s interesting to hear it from both of your perspectives. Thank you (:

Thank you for the eloquent summary! BTS are vulnerable humans like us, but they can be fearless when they believe in something, even though it goes against expectations. And they can do so because they trust each other and their ARMY friends. 👍

Yeah I think it was very bold of BTS to produce this video in this campy style. I am guessing they believed this style would suit their message better. I like it because it reminded me that BTS is not just about the high fidelity production, but also about the message.

I agree with the points you discussed. I think BTS & BIGHIT did an exceptional job of deliberately misdirecting people with the teaser of what to expect from IDOL mv. They’re so clever.

Yeah and we all had fun theorizing their intentions! I had no idea about the South African motifs. I am glad they chose to showcase "global but local" in such an interesting way.

I can't even express in words how much I love your commentary and analysis. It's really professional, eloquent and in-depth. When I watched the video for the first time, I was shocked, but in a very positive way - the music, choreo, editing, outfits, colors, lyrics, the whole concept... it was such an incredible sensory overload that I started to dance even before the first chorus started because I felt so happy. I should mention that I hate dancing because I'm not confident in myself... So I was very, very surprised about that. Lots of people think the video is a satire of stereotypical K-Pop videos. I agree, but, to be honest, something different is much more important - it's the fact that they can use all those stereotypical K-Pop elements to express themselves and not even care about what other people may think. Watching it for the first time, I noticed bad CG, ridiculous zoom ins, cloning and so on, but BTS/Big Hit used them is such a clever way that instead of thinking "this is cliche, this is weird, this is stupid", I simply thought "this is so much fun!". Later, RM said they wanted to make IDOL feel like a festival and I think they achieved this effect perfectly. I'm seeing them in London soon, I can't even imagine how fun the concert is going to be... It was very risky for BTS to make such a music video and I can see that even among the armys there are some that don't really understand or like the concept because they wanted and expected something 'deep'. But I think we're focusing too much on 'deep stuff' while failing to understand even the simplest ideas... I feel like the idea behind IDOL is so simple that it's difficult to understand. Hah, sorry for blabbering so much, I'm just so excited because you expressed in words so many of my personal feelings about the song and the music video. I could truly feel how much both of you were amazed. I'm going to check out more of your videos since this one was so interesting!

9:22 Gosh, I love your analogy so much. I never thought of this (again) and that's what we had been missing. We forgot the fact that *BTS* is that *one particular group* who *breaks all the stereotypes and prejudices about being an idol.* This era is... well, they totally *_snapped._* And I couldn't love this era more. I'm super hooked. BTS absolutely snatched all of the wigs out there. 👌🏻💕

i personally loved the kitsch style! it was very well done and has a tongue in cheek vibe. it's so clear the direction they were aiming for artistically when you read the lyrics! and i agree so much with what he said, that the EDM isn't westernised, it's south african! it's not at all a style that is popular in the west. i think bts was well aware of what people were murmuring about them - they are making music catering to the western market to appease them, and right at the height of their popularity in the west they said 'well watch us do the exact opposite! we don't care, we make the music we want!' and the message just glares at you through the explosion of colour and individuality and genuineness expressed in the lyrics and mv :) i love that they did this, and i love that they made it clear that their motivation still remains to be true to not only their roots but also themselves, since that is the essence of bts and why people started loving them in the first place!

Amazing reaction! Also, I want to point out that in the beginning of the Idol mv, there was a globe on top of the table that they were sitting around on the right. It had it pointed to North America. But at the end of the video, if you look at the globe, you see it pointed to South Korea. I think that further clarifies the double message of the mv that BTS will stay true to their roots.

I really enjoy the videos the two of you do together. My husband works in television and I ask him many things about videos. But the thing I like about IDOL is, well, first the message and second there is all that Korean tradition packed into it. So many Korean ARMYs have been so kind in explaining what the symbolism is or why this is in there. It has been a great lesson in your culture for this American ARMY. My husband could not answer those questions. Also, I know many people were saying that BTS had become too westernized and don't remember their roots. Well, you can't be more Korean than IDOL. There performances during the award season were out of this world. I hope you saw them. Especially the Melon Music Awards with Fake Love, Airplane pt. 2 and IDOL. It was the most impressive performance of IDOL I have seen. Thank you for all the reactions the two of you have done for BTS. 💜

You have to watch the behind so you can see the sets too. #BTS never does ANYTHING MINDLESSLY! TRUST ME!! EVERYTHING HAS A MEANING. For those of us that understand, we have fun rewatching and finding more and more. Just know that every video they have ever done since debut showed up again in this video in some way whether by choreography, makeup of background dancers, glitche film in background, setting, lyrics, theme, whatever. The rest of it is all referencing in some way a member's way of referencing a specific story that bugged them. #IDOL Thank you for appreciating them like you do!

Thanks! Great combination of technical expertise & explanation, Korean context & perspective, and fan knowledge & insight. I was a little surprised you didn't say much about the shark cage and the giant figures that loom over them. I"m sure ARMY has a bunch of theories and explanations but here's my take on it. The shark cage is a transformed version of the Korean pavilion and it's also their performance stage. It's a safe place for them but they're surrounded by a dangerous environment and the sharks would love to rip them to shreds. Meanwhile their global image has ballooned out of control but who they really are is still the seven guys singing and dancing in the shark cage/pavilion/stage. It's my favorite part of the MV because I think they're acknowledging the reality & the hype around them and the arguments about Korean vs western and idol vs artist and saying none of it really matters. They're true to themselves and their roots and they're happy with who they are and what they do so you can call them what you want because anyone else's label, image or judgement is irrelevant when you truly love yourself.

whoa very apt description, this was the reason I love BTS craft in the first place coz of "taking pride of their identity", their culture as a whole. If they ever produce a "full english song" I am not sure I would love that AS MUCH as I adore their all Korean music. I admire & love their music as it is, its ok to have some english words here & there but not in full song. I am not S.Korean but am a huge fan of BTS.

Thank you for the review. Pretty sure many had said this but the mv has reasons why it is like that. Starting from the teaser to the actual mv, bts gave different vibes from the teasers to music video. They was criticized with DNA MV and they're like wtf, we will do this again. There are so many happenings in here. . RM wearing filters- he was told to stop using filters during his live and he said sorry . V wearing large glasses - he was like heck, i look good .the frame full of camera - they're like flooded with camera left and right .taehyung passing tru many people- they got mob before, jimin fell because someone grab him in the airport, someone hurt suga's elbow at the airport and many more .Flooded faces of them - typical stereotypes to korean men. People say they all look the same. .wearing hanbok- they were called westernized by many people but they're like damn. We are korean .jhopes rabbit sweater- people criticized him for his bugs bunny personality .yoongi snow white shirt- criticized for being very pale .plastic/giant figures of them- they're being called plastic or had done plastic surgeries. (Which is not true) .jimin solo with NO SIGNAL background - they were accused of plagiarizing bigbang's no signal video during performance before. .shark - they're koreans , they're tigers (representation) but cant be touch by anyone even sharks. Because they're stronger than anyone else. They're like wtf.. whatever you accuse us, call us idols, criticize us, accuse us with anything but I CANT STOP LOVING MYSELF so i will do whatever i want. Many things has been explained by another youtuber i forgot his channel,. About the korean lyrics and the symbolism (ilsam, sampal, gore, etc there)

I loved your analysis, it gave me a new perspective of the video from technical point of view, the B-class and S-class thing. The MV does hold deep meaning though. Every frame relates to something from previous music videos or some instances that happened, for example in a V-live one fan told V not to wear those glasses and in the video he is wearing the same glases, or in another V-live a fan told RM not to use filters and he said okay and here he uses cute filters. It all says "each of this is part of me, and I find a new me everyday". So, the MV is also very different. Them being in shark tank or the stage relates to them being in continuous public scrutiny (LY:Answer album concept pictures). Them being in the tank and shark attacking them is like their haters coming after them but they are above all that, they love themselves so what haters say doesn't matter. They always tell many serious concepts in a fun, energetic dance focused songs. Like Anpanman where they compare themselves to a superhero who is made up of bread and gives a piece of himself to feed all hungry children in the world. Then Go Go which say don't worry and spend it all but then it is a satire. Same goes with Donguel Breaker, which talks about materialistic society but the video and the song is so upbeat.
@Minidance6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I didn't know about the vlive references. Yuji and I didn't catch many details like the shark because we focused on only some aspects of the video (and also because we didn't have some of the background info). There are many fun KZbin videos breaking down the specifics of IDOL, so I hope this video offers a complementary point of view. Anyways, I really like the HYYH-LY arc and am happy that BTS is concluding the series with a self love message. And they chose a really interesting style of music and video to convey the message. BTW you might like my Anpanman reaction, where my friend explains the Anpanman motif to me 🙂

I thank DKDKTV for explaining the MV to us, international ARMYs. We don’t speak korean and understand the level of formality and the words itself. We like their music because of visuals and production first before it’s meaning. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR THIS INSIGHT AS WELL. Also, can you guys please watch, DKDKTV’s BTS IDOL EXPLAINED IN KOREAN POINT OF VIEW?

This is just a perfect and professional reaction vid. I mean, your reactions make sense. Unlike other reactions that are just full of 'woah' and 'omg', it made their reactions cringey. But yours is just, I'm speechless. You pointed out everything. Thank you for this, will absolutely wait for your next reactions! 💕

조선 EDM은 어느 대학교에서 우리나라 전통악기를 전자음으로 표현해 준 부분이 있어서 그렇게 표현하고 있는 겁니다.

Love your videos, it is so nice both english and korean speakers can watch it, so thank you for this. I wonder if you watch any of the making of videos for BTS MVs? They usually give good insight of how the shooting is done and would make a great addition to your videos in my opinion. I would be interested in what you think about it. Especially videos like Save me and Dope which are really special to me :)
