Useful and interesting episode. Would you please tell me whether the following words are considered as minimal pairs or not " but - put "
@BillieEnglish5 ай бұрын
Hello! No, these 2 are not minimal pairs because they differ in two sounds: the initial consonant sound as well as the vowel sound.

Hi, can you make a brief ed video on near minimal pairs? Apart from what they are I couldn't find any infos on advanced details.Thanks
@BillieEnglish4 жыл бұрын
I think near minimal pairs are pairs of words in which 2 sounds in the same position are different. An example would be: kiss & keys transcribed as kiss - / kɪs/ & keys - /ki:z/ - so here you have a short and long i in second position and an unvoiced and voiced 's' in third position - it's not quite a minimal pair, so we could call it a near minimal pair.

Thanks. Examples of minimal pairs. Vowel. Bag / bæg/ Bat/ bæt/. Fit/fit/ feet / fi:t/ Consonant. At the initial position Rat/ ræt/ cat / kæt/ Consonant at the final/ coda position.

The minimal pairs must have the same number of letters. Is it right or wrong
@BillieEnglish Жыл бұрын
Hello! The pair must have the same amount of syllables and sounds (not necessarily letters since sometimes a group of letters is represented by just one sound). For example: 'caught' & 'cot' are a minimal pair. They consist of one syllable each and 3 sounds each. However, 'caught' has 6 letters and 'cot' only 3.

Minimalpairs: two words that differ in one sound and they have different meaning .Like (net) and knit / pen And pin
@BillieEnglish4 жыл бұрын
A good summary and two nice examples! I especially like 'net & knit' - they are a minimal pair and a good illustration as well that English spelling and pronunciation differ a lot! They spelling of both words looks so different but they really only differ in one sound! /net/ & /nit/ 👍😊

Can I find the word with zero onset or zero coda as a minimal pair?
@BillieEnglish3 жыл бұрын
If the word has zero onset and zero coda and only exists of a nucleus it would only have one vowel sound, e.g. the indefinite article 'a' - those words have no minimal pairs.

Hiya, can I just ask why more and moor are not minimal pairs please ?
@BillieEnglish Жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes, of course :-) They are homophones = 2 words with different spelling and meaning but the exact same pronunciation. That's why! Minimal pairs don't have the same pronunciation, they differ in one sound. An example of a minimal pair would be: more & nor OR more & pour etc. I hope this helps!

Draft and draught ? I am not quite sure
@BillieEnglish4 жыл бұрын
These 2 words describe the same thing and show two different spellings: 'draught' (British English) pronounced as /drɑːft/; and 'draft' (American English) pronounced as /dræft/. So yes, in a way you could say they work a bit like a minimal pair, but since the meaning is the same it's also not a real minimal pair because real minimal pairs usually have a different meaning as well as a different pronunciation. I hope this makes it clear! :-)

Too - two?
@BillieEnglish3 жыл бұрын
These two words form homophones but are not a minimal pair because the pronunciation is exactly the same in both: /tu:/ - I have a video on homophones explaining what they are exactly, basically two words with identical pronunciation but different spelling (e.g. flower & flour). A minimal pair would be: team & dream - almost the same but the first sound is different in both words, the rest is identical!
