I would tell others that you could call yourself a minimalist by how little you own or how much you’ve removed, but there’s a higher level of mastery when you’re finally in control of what you bring in.

I give away 40+ things and replaced them with 4, Im very impress of how little we really need in life and how simple it is, I think minimalism is our soul asking for all that extra time and attention we were giving to mundane things, and the secret is to keep the basics of what is essential to you.

I struggle with getting rid of things i already own but surprisingly the mininalist thought process has helped me control how much new things i bring in.

When I started getting rid of books, CD's and Dvd's years ago I thought I'd miss them a lot and that I'd regret it in the long run, but that never happened. Actually it gave me the necessary strength to declutter all the rest in the house. With clothes I never had problems, never really felt attached to them. What I found hard to do was to get rid of particular objects, but honestly I didn't cry while doing so, as I was ready to let those things go, even sentimental ones. I had some renovation works done at home in the last few weeks and I decluttered a lot of stuff that seemed to be reproducing itself at night, I found so many little things here and the that didn't even remember about, so happy now that my home looks even more empty and neat! You're right, we change over time and what we used to need in the past no longer serves us now, so let's give it to people in need who'll be' happy ti vive our stuff a new life and purpose.

For me it became very easy to get rid of things once I started making more quality purchases with clothes. Once I had a very thick warm stylish sweater, I no longer reached for any of the MANY other similar ones I had picked up at the thrift store. So it became very easy to "replace" ten low quality items with one that I absolutely adore and want to wear every single day.

One thing I've learned is not to go thrift shopping often, and when I do go, to have a strict list of what I really need. Otherwise, before I would see a good bargain and buy it, but I accumulated too many clothes and household items that way. I don't have a very small wardrobe, but it is now 1/3 what it was previously. And I am in the process of donating or selling household items, especially decorative ones that just added to clutter.

Wonderful! I have just started my journey and this has been most informative. Thank you! I would rather say that I am minimizing rather than becoming a minimalist. You gave me that permission. Bless you.

I learned that you dont have to ditch everything at once if you are not ready for it. After a lot of practicing it becomes really easy to say goodbye to certain objects.

Exactly. Well said I decluttered 90 plus percents of all my things. I call myself minimalist now even I still own stuff but I am so conscious of what comes in my home more leaving than staying.. But I am enjoying some decos I still have I also love my plans more. If you own pictures you would be shocked and proud. And yes declutter is going on and on is process journey

I like the one out rule before a new one comes into my life. Things should be from the same category. An old pair of shoes go out before the new ones come in.

I always ask people not to buy me presents. Only for my birthday I make a list of things I truly want, some cost very little so it is not too expensive. But I do get presents during the year, even though I tell people not to do that. Of course it is very sweet, but usually I think now I've gotten something I don't actually want to have. But it doesn't feel good to get rid of it instantly because it was given to me. I know it is not a first world problem, but still I can't seem to figure out how to deal with it

Personally I learned that minimalism doesn't mean you have to give up your identity. It doesn't mean all of your clothes should be grey, black and white or that you have to live in an empty apartment. That's what wasn't working for me at first. Of course neutral colours means it's easier to mix and match things, it does give you more versatility in that sense but I definitely think you can find a way to make minimalism work for you if this isn't your style !
@ecofriendlia
@ecofriendlia 3 жыл бұрын
That is so true! And also you can absolutely restrict your color palette to make mixing and matching easier without sacrificing your favorite colors. And of course, you can be a minimalist without having a capsule wardrobe or owning a small number of clothes ☺ and that I think is the beauty of it!

Great tips and advice Lia. Agree with these points. Minimalism is surely personal and a lifelong journey. Keep what you use and enjoy. The rest can be given to others who may need the objects and recycle in the correct way. Kindest greetings.

I take it and think about it. If I want it, I keep it, sometimes I try to use/have it for a while and then give it away and sometimes I just give it to somebody else for free or put it on a marketplace for somebody to pick it up ☺️
