I've setup a small 'studio' and I don't even have to get out of bed! This setup is perfect for home studio music producers that have minimal space but want to produce a lot of music.

For those who are just now getting started, you should know that a lot of Midi keyboards come with lite versions of a DAW you may be interested in. The MiniLab MkII and the Launchkey Mini MK3 both come with Ableton Live lite :)

Just saw this video. Thank you for posting. I am a long time drummer/percussionist looking to explore the electronic/beat-making/recording side of things, and how I can incorporate into my acoustic setup. I'm so new to all of this, but recently purchased the arturia minilab mk2 and it came with abelton and some plug ins.

Brother dear... you've just answered a series of questions I've been pondering for a while now regarding electronic music, home (bedroom, rather) studio set-up, getting ready when the muse falls in love with one for no particular reason other than the love for music... I guess, and you sing beautifully, too! I much appreciate who you are and what you do!

Just wanted to say you inspire me man. I've been learning FL Studio for a couple months now to make beats and today, I got my first MIDI keyboard (an Arturia Microlab) and I already feel so much more comfortable creating melodies this way rather than by manually dragging the notes in. As I get better I might get a more 'advanced' controller and take a look at Ableton, it's really motivating to see what you create with this DAW :)

Great video. I would add two points. Something that often gets overlooked when choosing a computer is fan noise. I have a burly beast of a gaming laptop which meets all the specs and can handle anything I throw at it, but it makes way too much noise for me to have a microphone anywhere near it. The other factor to consider has to do with the headphones you choose. In addition to choosing on-ear or over-ear, there are closed-back and open-back headphones. Closed-back is the most ideal as they will lead to less bleed picked up by the microphone, especially if you're playing with a click.

Rode has a new mic that has USB-C out. NT1 5th generation, $250. That means no interface is needed, so that would save a hundred bucks. It’s a 32 bit mic, which means no clipping and no levels to set.

It brings me joy seeing (my) Akai MPK mini around :D What do you think of iPad (/tablet) music production? Well, maybe 'production' is a strong word for me: I'm looking to get a full 88key midi keyboard and I need a sound source for it (cause I can't really use it at the computer), so I thought I'd get an iPad... I can have my piano vsts in there and any sound basically. And I can use Cubasis as a light daw - just to record and sketch stuff... are 3-ish GB of RAM enough?... Actually I'm not sure between iPad air 3 (newer), 3 GB, or iPad pro 2017 (so older...) but 4GB RAM...

Man, wish I saw this as a kid. Grown up now and finally figuring all this stuff out. I have been thinking of getting a mini midi controller. I have a full length keyboard with midi control but there’s not a good place to set up next to my desk with my mic and I just end up not creating as much going between the keyboard and back to the desk for vocals.

As usual, great done. In my case, because i'm at first guitar player, the optional things are SonicPort VX from Line6, a Yamaha THR10 as interface and speakers, my little Marshall headphone, and the audio in my van as studio mixer and for some takes. I do miss a keyboard, probably the Novation, or new Akai or NI, before XMAS I wish. I do hope my english is enough for you to understand.
