I have a tip for you to consider. A freezer with lots of space costs more to run. Though a fridge is better with ample air space around the food. For the freezer the empty spaces can be filled with magazines or something which will hold the coldness. I'm not sure if it's because air is harder to cool to such low temperatures. Second tip, don't leave things on your kitchen scales as it upsets the mechanism over time and they will become inaccurate much quicker, depending on the weight of the item. I worry when minimalism means a smaller selection of foods are eaten. We need lots of different foods as each one brings its own blend of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. I enjoy your videos and find encouragement from them to go clear out an area. It feels great when I open a drawer and it's neat and tidy AND I can see everything in there. Thank you for your videos.

linda johnson instead of trying to go all out for a minimalist lifestyle I have taken an approach of a reductionist. I slow am evolving towards minimalism but on a slower pace. I continually purge and reorganize all our "stuff". My family is much more on board with this approach.

linda johnson i have 3 children and a husband and my house is more minimized then her house. I do with out a crib, bouncer, swing.. all that crap. and my kids have 2 favorite toys and 2 stuffed animals. they rarely play with them either. we go places or they play outside in the backyard all day ;) it is possible and SOOO much easier on me, my marriage and my children this way. I never have to bother them with cleaning up or cleaning up their toys/room. they help with cooking and cleaning up after cooking, laundry, sweeping and quick tidying. less stuff, less stress

I love your bare kitchen, it's so calming. It's probably why you can film such a calm video in the midst of flooding chaos. Your ideas for minimalism help me pare down even more and I look forward to them. I do have more food, but that's due to my upbringing and not being comfortable relying on the regular delivery of products to the stores. Now that I've fully embraced Zero-Waste, I was able to completely wean myself from saran wrap and plastic bags, without buying anything special. It's just a different mindset. And, I keep all my recipes and lists on my Smartphone.

I manage property, they need to replace your carpet pad, you can clean the carpet, but the mold is in the padding under the carpet. the sub floor which is most likely cement should be cleaned with ammonia, never bleach (it will discolor the carpet over time best of luck to you! ps love the vids!

Some minimalist things I have learned over the years: you dont need a dishwasher if you just wash dry and put away your bowl right away. same with your pans, I just clean them and out them away before I eat my food. takes 2 minutes (same amount of time it takes my food to cool down to eat anyway). If you wash things right away and never put them in the sink, you never have to "do the dishes". For the laundry, I just out anything dirty directly in the washer instead of a basket. when its full I turn it on. I dont bother with whites, darks, towels.

We have a big family but we do the dishes the same way too. And after the dinner everyone washes his plate by hand. That way the kitchen sink is rarely cluttered. No need for a dishwasher unless you throw parties every night.

Nice kitchen. However, the oven mitts over the electrical outlets ara fire hazard. May I suggest the electric outlet covers that are inexpensive and can be purchased anywhere. Also, since you have had issues with flooding and you really don't use that large refrigerator, may I suggest a smaller model that can be raised up off the floor. My mom has one at her lake cottage and it works great.

I don't have an oven, only a two burner range, so I don't do any baking (unless it's raw). I simply have a kettle, pot, wok, and crock pot. Added to the range, I can cook just about anything that I eat. Living near the grocery store is always a plus. I pass it everyday on the way to and from work, so it's easy to picky up fresh produce every other day or so.

Hi Melody, I am curious as to why you have your onion station raised? In my kitchen, I have placed a magnetic strip onto the wall and I place my knife, sharpener, scissors or you could hang anything else that is metal. This sits in the same vicinity as my chopping board. I suppose you could place the strip on the inside wall of the cupboard, say where your saucepans are. I like my knives exceptionally sharp so I won't use a drawer, this method works well for me in my kitchen.

Every thing about my place is pretty minimalist, except the kitchen...I love going in there and going hog wild with so many ingredients on hand...either it's your thing or it's not. If that kitchen had a plant in it, it wd look like heaven to me....and/or a nice tea pot. I'm working on streamlining the counter top clutter (too many plants!).....not there yet.

My kitchen is my nemesis. It is by far the biggest goal I have to tackle. I really would love to just throw everything away and start over fresh, but I would feel guilty about wasting it all. I have a spare bedroom and I'm going to pull all of my kitchen supplies out, throw away what is unusable, put items in a box that I want to donate (not even going to waste time selling), and put items in a box that I'm not sure about.

Hi Melody, have you found that you have as good results using your IP as a slow cooker? Best thing for knives is a magnetic bar near your splash back prep area. All knives up out of the way, but quick access and quick put away. I quickly rinse knives and put straight back after use.

Thanks for the tour! I noticed that you lack a few things and I was curious how you live without them--a coffee pot, toaster, microwave, and tupperware containers. I didn't see ziplock bags so how do you transport food or snacks when you are on the go? We all take our lunch and prep big meals a few times a week, so I feel like we need lots of tupperware.

I'm well organised and practical person and I still end up smacking myself in the forehead after many of your videos. A wall mounted dishsoap dispenser. Such an obvious solution, yet I never thought of it. Never seen one anywhere either. It's always either built into the sink/draining board (hard to clean) or a little flask standing around. Btw. I used to wash my dishtowels with my clothes, too...until someone I dated was quite horrified at the thought of them being in the same washload as dirty socks and underwear. Still torn on the subject now. Did you ever have misgivings because of that?

I'm curious because my kitchen is overflowing with stuff, I love to cook, and have children to feed who all eat differently. I suspect they eat out a lot....lol. Mixing bowls? Always in use for big salads. Freezer...almonds, walnuts, pecans, coconut.....stock up n save...same with frozen berries. Under sink? Bucket full of plastic scrubbers, garbage bags, scrub brush, dish soap and other side, 5 gal bucket for garbage. Dishwasher? full of storage containers, a few nice jars, extra plates and my hand mixer. Spices? on a blank end-wall...3 shelf curio about 2 'wide. Also store my tea pot there. Tea? That's one whole upper cabinet! Canned goods? ....take up a double cabinet along with my air popper. My dining table has been taken over by plants..

Even though I have a little more than her, i grocery shop once per week and only buy what I need for the week. I do not have excess in my cupboards/fridge/freezer and I do not eat out. I only buy the things I eat when I run out so I don’t store “backups”. I have zero baking supplies and dont use many condiments at all. Not everyone likes to bake or cook large meals. Nothing wrong with liking it; just saying not everyone does. I definitely don’t:)

Minimalism looks different for everyone. & you're a moron if you think she insulted anybody by owning a dishwasher. For all you know that dishwasher was there when she moved in. Minimalism is not about wastefully throwing away useful appliances. And she never told anybody to go buy a dishwasher.
