I noticed more and more the trend of maximalism popping up everywhere and I thought it'd be fun to react to the trend as a minimalist. Do I love it? Do I hate it? Or are these people just crazy!
Trends come and go. The new trend often seems to be the complete opposite of the old trend. And since there was this big trend on minimalism a few years ago, it is only fitting that now comes the trend of maximalism. Let's talk about it.

this was genuinely interesting as a maximalist, i prefer my walls and clothes to be loud and to reflect my personality, if they're blank, it hinders my creativity and decreases my energy so it's always interesting to see the minimalist perspective :)

Eclectic maximalism is pure spatial hedonism: a polychromatic anarchy. A lifestyle of celebration. It can be non-consumerist, since it heavily promotes curation and gradual adaptation, collection and cherishing of objects, not as products but as creations. If one's a true maximalist, you can count on them not to get rid of their stuff at the first turn of trends, but to hold on and hope that future generations can appreciate them just as much. ❤ It was so interesting to hear your perspective!

I like the maximalist aesthetic, but only when I’m in a Restaurant or something. at home I prefer a very simple and clean look. Otherwise I would get overstimulated, being constantly exposed to that kind of overabundance of stimuli.

Interestingly I am the opposite, when I'm in a public space I prefer minimalism, but when I'm in my own home I like to be surrounded by my personal items which feels like "me".

I'm a maximalist to my very core. What good is money if I already have my necessities and can't buy nice things that reflect my personality with it? I believe life should be as much as it can be instead of as little as one can get away with. More is more, in absolutely everything. I also have the sort of personality type that can handle this type of life philosophy, but not everyone does. Simple and clean are not words in my vocabulary when it comes to interior design. Every wall of my apartment must be as loud, colorful, and overstimulating as humanly possible. I love it. Layers, layers, and more layers. Colors, colors, and more colors. Patterns, patterns, and more patterns. The minimalist as all get out 2010's were so unbearably boring to me. I want to live to excess as far as I can go, like people did in the 80's and 00's. No such thing as too much in some regards, I say.

I tend to thrive more (less stress and anxiousness)with minimalism so I would say it’s a lifestyle and mindset for sure.

I love maximalism! it allows my personality to shine in my home decor. Even though I don't have a loud personality, I can still decorate to match what I want. I'm also a sentimental person so I think that contributes to that lmao

You can say minimalism is about saving money until you see how much it costs to have your rich people minimalist clothes and furniture

What you are refering to is the minimalist asthetic, which is different to minimalism as a philosophy. The minimalist philosiphy is about having less, no matter what that looks like ( e.g. coulor, design) You can own affordable things and be a minimalist. It's not about how it looks, but about only owning what truly brings you value ;)

What a lovely video! I have always been a maximalist decore wise. It's so funny to be suddenly hip, and knowing I will be dated soon. Though dusting is rough! But while dusting, it's a good time to reorganize items and see what is working and what isn't. My biggest gripe with maximalism being a trend is people are buying junk to have junk. Junk should be collected slowly overtime. I work at a thrift store and our store is a glorified dumpster. We throw out so many items just because we do not have space on the sale floor!

Your comment reflects something I feel is so often overlooked when discussing maximalism! If you're buying stuff to serve the aesthetic and nothing more, you're hoarding. Ideally, your maximalist living space should be full of things that have some kind of meaning - and even then, you need to know when and how to let go. :)

I feel like that's not just maximalists. So many house tour videos show someone saying, "So the designer chose this basket/picture/vase/etc and I guess it looks nice." Anytime people follow a trend, there'll be those that get the trendy accessories just to get them.

I am a maximalistic minimalist. Not sure how else to express my ambivalent nature. How I solve this problem? I limit the amount of physical objects, but indulge in colors and patterns instead... I think both of my personalities stay happy that way.

I think of minimalism as a mindset and a tool to simplify my life - interior design is to make you a constant consumer and to be disastified after a couple of years

Good explanations! I didn't really understand minimalism because I love my stuff, use it, and find it invigorating as well as enjoyable to see. I was surprised by a friend who said my place was too stimulating, so your intro info gave me the mindset behind minimalism. I'm thrilled that my way (and that of others I've know) of decors and more has a name! Definitely a maximalist;-) at heart!

minimalist don't really understand maximalism, they often have wrong notions and ideas when it comes to the decor. I was a minimalist before but with time I found myself more and more attracted to maximalist decor. The moment I set my eyes on Arrietty's , Howl's, Anna's & Marnie's room etc., from the Studio Ghibli movies "Arrietty", "Howl's moving castle" and "When Marnie was here" I was in love. I wanted to understand to know more about art and interior decors so I watched a lot of AD videos of famous people's homes, most attractive ones for me where usually fashion designers, art directors, old money billionaires' nyc penthouses... and guess what they had in common, maximalism. That's when I realized my style, I guess i was super attracted to the bohemian, rococo etc's maximalist decor that was in some way flashy, glam, iconic and unabashedly seductive all while being equally cozy and comfortable. 💖

i prefer to stay more minimalist :) even if i feel it lovely but maybe with less informations on the wall. just the colours texture and few decors :) in the decluttering process, i felt a relief and more serene. since i feel even easier to focus and feel more confident even towards life as i feel to move too, so if i have to move, i feel more relax, and i feel more free when i have less :) might be a step in my life, no idea but i moved a lot younger too. then i settled few years but i did not feel fine when i felt to have a bit too much things, so i decluttered and since i feel better and even clearer with my own self.. for me being more minimalist is really a way of life, more than a trend when you live it as you do maybe too, as more a life style ;) mindset than just about the style of it ;) with no judgement, just the feeling that you have this global life approach to focus on the essential even in your life choices, :) intentional ;) no idea, i do not want to judge at all, just a feeling. anyway the most important is to feel aligned with how we feel and live and do for the self first :) i felt your video interesting to think about our own personal needs and values, thank you :) as i am in a life transition, it helps me to sense what i feel and value most :) thank you ;) happy new year !! :)

yes! I totally agree :) minimalism is so much more than a style or trend! it is a way of life, a philosophy and a mindset :) minimalism has also helped me feel more free and move more easily! moving with a lot of stuff is the worst! I've done that too many times :D Thanks for such an insightful comment luna

Probably quite an unpopular opinion but there are actually really few real minimalists. Minimalism is so disproportionally inflated right now, people use the term here and there while in the majority of cases all these "minimalists" either have terrible sense of style or not enough money and want to hide it or they think it's trendy and/or have enough money to hire a designer who makes their flat look boring but expensive. All these "clean and simple" speeches are not specifically minimalism related. If your flat is clean and simple, it doesn't mean you are a minimalist. Maximalism on the other hand is not just a pile of things that are intended to "make one look happy". You really need to have at least some taste and fashion sense to create a somewhat interesting design idea. I hope one day peiple will think about expressing themselves snd not just seeming to be "in trend".
