Your example makes perfect sense for most people. However my wife and I live in Ca and are in the 22% fed bracket. We only buy Treasury bonds in our taxable account which are state tax exempt. For us LTGC and QD are taxed at 15% Fed and 9% State. Also we have enough taxable assets to take care of our family and all off our IRA assets will go to charity tax free. So it makes the problem a little more complicated.

Yes, you can put almost anything in a Roth. Bonds, equities, even annuities. Depending on your brokerage of course. I hope to build up a large dividend portfolio in my Roth and live off that and then leave it to my family when I pass
