In this video, discover what to expect if you are called up for jury duty. Your role as a juror is an important one - you need to carefully consider all the evidence presented to you during the triaI and, together with your fellow jurors, decide if the defendant is guilty or not guilty.
We first explain how jurors are selected and the exemptions that mean you are not eligible for jury duty. If you have been selected, you are expected to attend court every day of your duty period. We take you through the fines you can occur if you miss your jury duty, how long jury duty is expected to last, and what you will be doing on a day-to-day basis.
You will see the inside of a courtroom so you can familiarise yourself with the space. We guide you through who's who in a courtroom, from the judge to the court usher, and where you will sit in the jury box. We explain the juror's oath - which you repeat to be sworn in as a juror - and the options if you do not want to swear on a holy book.
In the trial, you will first listen to the case for the prosecution and hear any witnesses be called and cross-examined. Then it is the turn of the defence, who represent the defendant. When all the evidence has been given, the prosecution and defence will present their closing arguments directly to you. The judge will summarise the case and explain what is expected of you.
As a jury, you and your fellow jurors will leave the court to deliberate on a verdict. During this time, you will discuss the evidence and cast individual votes on whether you think the defendant is guilty or not guilty. You must not discuss the details of the case with anyone other than your fellow jurors and you must not search the internet for any information on the case. It is a serious offence to reveal anything discussed in the jury room, and can result in a fine or even a prison sentence.
You are expected to reach a unanimous verdict, but we explain what happens if you do not all reach the same verdict. We will take you through exactly what happens during and after the verdict is delivered.
If you are a juror who has been called for jury duty in the UK, we encourage you to watch this video and pay close attention to what is expected of you. It's an important legal obligation but we are aware it can be disruptive to your day-to-day life. We are grateful for your participation and cooperation.

To be honest, I have a lot of mixed feelings. I just became eligible to be selected for jury duty and a part of me is actually interested. Sure it could be long and boring, but as someone with a psychology major, I think it would be really great experience to have to think long and hard about what might be going on inside the mind of a criminal to be able to commit a crime, whether it be a large scale one or just a small offense. Sure I'll miss school, miss work, miss time with my family, but I think it'd be good life experience and force me to toughen up on the inside. That is if I get chosen because the chances are pretty small and I could even just be sent away after the interview. Who knows?

It’s a grey wig. No matter your race, all races have grey hair. Not only that I’m sure any ethnic minority judge is perfectly capable of arguing their own case if they feel they are being overlooked or treated unfairly. Personally I don’t think any ethnic minority judge would be bothered about wearing a grey wig.

Don't worry about poor memory - I am currently on a jury in a criminal trial and they provide each of us with printouts of all relevant documents and photos. Every word that is spoken by each person is taped and we may ask to hear those tapes later. Additionally, we are allowed to make our own notes with the pens and paper that they supply to us.

The UK courts rely on people who don't want to be there to try and give an honest verdict hopefully helping to protect the innocent and convict the guilty . If we left it only to those who would too eagerly serve there would be no balance left at all in justice. And if that dose not work for you,, think about this. Who would stand up to protect you from wrong or those who would do you harm should you need it. If you would not stand up for others why should they. and yes I am one of those who dose not want to go but will !

I am in the USA, and many of the things they are saying in the UK are the same here. I always like the wigs though, that doesn't happen here LOL! I was interested in the statement that in some cases, the judge may not require a unanimous verdict. Is that in the example of civil cases? That is the case here in California that civil cases can be decided with a 10 to 2 verdict, but criminal cases must be unanimous. It's criminal cases were allowed to not be unanimous, I think it would greatly reduce the number of mistrials we have here in the USA. Again, we should be learning from the mother country actually

The electoral register. Does this mean someone who isn't registered to vote never gets summoned for jury service? Too bad the jury boxes in the USA don't have a surface on which to take notes. It is interesting that the judge may accept a jury decision which is not unanimous. All criminal cases must have a unanimous vote in the USA while civil cases are a simple or 2/3rd majority. Also different in the USA is that we can be called every year for jury duty.

If you are not registered to vote, you will not be called upon for Jury Service. In general, everyone of voting age (aged 16 or over) will be on the electoral register. There is no legal requirement to be on the electoral register unless you have been asked by your local authority but decline (you can be fined). In some cases, you may be exempted from the electoral register (these are mostly in related to health problems though there may be other justifications for exemption). In the UK there are two versions of the Electoral Register, the Full version and the Open version. The full version is used for the Voting Register, for the prevention and detection of crime and for validating applications for financial services. The open version of the electoral register is something that can be purchased, but is also something an electorate can request to be removed from (without impacting the right of that person to vote).

If you were not present on the electoral register, your life in UK would be quite complicated. No credit whatsoever. No mobile phone contract. Pre-paid electricity meters only. Insane premiums for car insurance... So no, usually everybody who is eligible (UK, EU and Commonwealth citizens) WANTS to be on the electoral register. The problem is that many people - students in particular - may not live at the registered address, which may cause some confiusion.

In Crown courts, yes, they do have to wear them because it involves barristers and judges. It's a cultural thing - a lot of British and Commonwealth countries do it too. The outcome of a court case in a UK court has absolutely nothing to do with the facts. It is about the extent of the barrister's abilities, the judge's rulings in regards to the admissibility of certain evidence and finally the makeup of the jury, which is fixed by the prosecution and the police.

I had to do community service in 1991 for shoplifting in Ohio does that disqualify me for jury duty?
@SimonJ57
@SimonJ57 7 жыл бұрын
UK law states disqualification for 10 years under "community order". You have to contact your county court or search your county court website. If you can't find the information that way: If selected, your Jury pack will inform you of any disqualification reasons, then declare this on the section you return.
@petercdowney
@petercdowney 6 жыл бұрын
If it was in 1991, then no. You are only permanently disqualified from jury service if your conviction results in you being jailed for more than 5 years. Since yours resulted in you being ordered to carry out community service, the disqualification period ended a long time ago.

We all have to work. In my area judges are pretty good about excusing people if they are attending school while also working. Reporting when the courts need jurors is just the way it works. The only way to have a chance at fair trials for people is to have citizen juries. Not everything is about you.

my poor dad got that and couldnt look after my sick mum because of it, he never got a case. ive decided as a result that if im summoned im off to usa and will not return. why dont they use law students who want to study law? why force people. good thing i have not been summoned because i wont reply and i wont attend and if u think you will fine me thats too bad because i would have closed my bank before then to stop that. to fine a person for not duing something law students should be doing is rediculas.

The amount of people here complaining about jury duty is disgusting, stop being a lazy shit and get off facebook for a few days to serve your damn country. I'm no patriot but Jesus christ you all look like a bunch of whining 5 year olds, this is a critical part of the judicial system. I wish I had been called up myself but unfortunately not happened yet, still plenty of time though.

A society that permits people without any acumen for crime detection to pass judgment on other people. The United States has a lot of quaint ideas about wrong and right, but the majority of people haven't the intelligence to induce and make unbiased judgements. Are judicial system was conceived in righteous theory only.

so fkn stupid, i'm 18 and am being forced to decide someone's future. I have anxiety and sat in a strange room full of random people for 10+ days sounds fucking amazing. Saying its "one of the most important civic duties" is complete bullshit, all it means is that they don't have to pay anyone a salary if they can pull random people off the street. Stupid in every fkn way
