I love this idea. I’ve been pulling my 17 foot Jayco trailer for 6 years. I’m a 61 yr old gal, love freedom and traveling, but I’m sick of dealing with the set up and maintenance of my trailer and it’s systems. I want to be in something self contained, maneuverable, and affordable. This looks perfect.

Thanks! I can imagine! There were so many times last summer I was grateful to be in my minivan. For example, Acadia National Park, even with a minivan, it took me an hour to find a parking spot and when I did, I pulled right in with no issues. Another time in Lake Placid, 2 big transit vans got "tickets" for overnight parking, but I did not and I parked right between them. I think the minivan is a perfect option, especially if you're a single traveler. My first set up was a chair/bed 2/3 the width of this set up and I kept the single rear chair in place. It reclines and can fold down into the floor if you need the extra space. I also removed the front passenger seat too and had so much space for myself.

@@TyroneHardR Lots of things to consider. I like the idea of a teardrop trailer, but I personally don't have the space for one while not in use. I can move and use my van year round. Things to consider are design, price, living space, towing, parking and maintenance and what your priorities are. Both have their pros & cons.

Doh! I used a salad bowl from my sink and naturally a circle wastes space. I wish I had thought of a bread pan, and it's smart having the sink double as your AC drain. Bed setup is very cool too. Thanks for the video!

Great analysis on the sink with air conditioner dripping perfectly into it. Could u tell us more about ur solar panel how you installed it and the air deflector.bIndidnt see any roof bars etc.

Thanks! The solar panel was just barely too wide to use the OEM roof racks. I couldn't get it to sit evenly and I felt it was too high and would cause a lot of wind drag, so I removed the roof racks and was left with 5 OEM studs on each side. Then I attached 4 plumber galvanized hanger straps to the panel and mounted them to 4 of the OEM studs, 2 on each side: amzn.to/49UxgQi It is very secure and I've put over 15k miles on this setup so far and no issues. Then I run the wire down to the passenger side sliding door and it just gets pinched between the weather stripping so I didn't have to do any drilling through the roof. The air deflector I bought: amzn.to/4a4xjsT. Auto Ventshade (AVS) Windflector - Classic, Window, Fits Up To 41.5" and it's stuck on with 3M tape.

Thank you! In my opinion, I think it's the best bed/couch set up I've ever seen in a minivan. I love all the space it provides. I forgot to mention "Lounge Bed Mode" too. In bed mode, you can prop up the back as if getting to the refridgerator to turn the bed in to a recliner. It works great for watching movies! I love my AC and bread pan sink too. Love the functionality and simplicity! I will be building out a sprinter van and I am trying to keep my husband from going overboard especially in the beginning so that we can hit the road quicker! I need to look into the portable air conditioner versus a built-in, I think the only thing I would do different on yours is maybe paint the AC hoses black so they blend in with the outside window and are less noticeable. Thanks! That's exciting! Good luck and have fun! From what I've gathered, you should set aside about 3 months to build out a Sprinter style van. You could probably do it in less if you're laser focused! I was very close to buying a Transit Connect, but I didn't have the time to start from scratch. The Town & Country was already somewhat "move in ready" and half the cost, so it made more sense as a trial run. Vanlife is not for everyone. I wanted to make sure I actually liked it! That's a good point on the vent hoses. They draw a lot of questions from onlookers, but also brings on fun conversations as their interest was piqued.

You could buy a garden sprayer with a hand pump to fill the water chamber with compressed air... they come with a sprayer head..This would make a great little shower.

Thanks! Yes, as I was planning this all out, I originally wanted a van with a sunroof to vent my AC through the roof, but once I came up with the table and sink idea, I knew it would work out great. Without the sun roof, I'm able to get more surface area for a larger solar panel too. I love how it turned out! :) Thanks for your feedback!

Thanks! I love my AC set-up too. I wouldn't vanlife without it. Humidity and feeling sticky at night was a deal breaker for me. Thanks for the kind words. I wanted 500 watts, since that's what my EcoFlow caps out at, but 400 watts was the largest I could find that would fit my van roof. With bifacial technology, I could probably get closer to 500 watts now. It's been plenty of power for my needs though.

I considered that, but then I'd lose my power source from the lack of solar. I have an SUV tent that straps around the hatch area. I plan to do a demo and show if it works for the minivan. It adds a lot of extra space.

I good set up. Something that I would do would be to spray paint the air cond exhaust vents Black. They will blend in a lot better. Also I run with my car the Window Socks. Perfect for the heat as you can wind down the window for fresh air, & people can’t see in.

It could reduce the visibility and create a more seamless look. Great tip! Although, it has also provide interest by other vanlifers and has allowed me to show others my setup on the road. Window socks are a fantastic solution for maintaining privacy while still allowing fresh air into the vehicle. Especially during hot weather, being able to wind down the window without worrying about prying eyes and mosquitos is a definite advantage. It's a practical choice, especially if you're spending time in your car during warm days. Thanks for sharing your ideas and thoughts!

I just subscribed, I have the same ecoflow but flexibile solar pannel have not installed yet. I dont have a van or the ac, I was thinking of mounting a small 5k btu window ac unit, making a frame for it, and plexiglass so that the heat goes out with slider to push into place into window when in use. Since it would be more affordable. Great set up clean and easy to get to everything that you have, nice.

Thanks for the support! I have the EcoFlow 160 watt flexible solar panel too, but I couldn't keep it from flopping in the wind and it just didn't give me enough juice to recharge each day. I have it mounted on my mobile mechanic truck bed cap now and it's not flopping, so I think I just needed a better method of securing. I ended up making a wooden frame and have the panel mounted to the wooden fram and then I mounted the frame to the truck bed cap. Good luck on your build! Check Facebook Marketplace. The Zero Breeze can be found used for less. I bought mine for $450 shipped on eBay.

They retail for $1,000, but I bought mine used for $450 on eBay. With 2300 BTUs, it can effectively cool an area of 25-40 square feet under ideal conditions. Although, direct sunlight, outside temperature, humidity, setup of the intake & exhaust tubes will play a factor. I'm very happy with its performance!

Thanks! It was not too difficult to build. The drawers were the most difficult part. If I did it over again, I would not use the drawer slider rails and just let the drawers rest and slide on the floor. Thank you for your kind words! My fiance came up with the bread pan sink idea. Creating a drain hole took some patience. I drilled with 1-1/4" hole saw attachment to fit the Danco Sink Drain from Menards (Model Number: 9D00088163). It was still a little too small, so I had to file it a little larger with a grinding stone, but in hindsight, I think if I had just bent down the edges in the first place, the drain tube would have fit fine without grinding. I bent the hold down so the drain would recess lower and water would be able to drain more easily. Yes, I used these hooks from Amazon: amzn.to/3QajEcA These hooks are incredibly handy for organizing hanging items and keeping them off the floor. Starting your Dodge Grand Caravan build is exciting! I studied a LOT of builds and felt the "Wathier" couch/bed was the best and easiet design and layout to maximize storage and built in features. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go for these cushions: amzn.to/3JwFy5S I didn't like the idea of two pieces, but it's really hard to find a full bed size that isn't a mattress topper. I would say no. All AC units need an exhaust you could get by with one pipe and a drain hose. I have a 12000 BTU unit and it does leak water out. Water never goes out the large pipe . I filled a 5 gallon pale of water in a few hours in the summer heat. It's a shame you cannot use that water. I would never drink from that water. You could shower with it I guess if you filter it. It's distilled water with rubber contaminants and dirt from the air filter. I'm sure they improved these portable AC units. I would just use the car AC and vent the exhaust from the van engine away from the van. you don't need to run the van constantly at night. Sometimes at home I run a window unit then turn up the temperature so the unit turns off. I don't need it cold to sleep. 73

I thought you could get away without an exhaust, but it really throws out some heat and you don't want that heat in the space you're trying to cool, so definitely get that exhaust hose outside your space. I went back and forth on whether you "need" the intake hose in external space too and from what I gathered, you do if your space is a sealed space, otherwise the AC unit will eventually pull outside air in as it creates a vacuum inside your vehicle. With the intake in external space, it will not create that vacuum affect and will actually run more efficiently as the inside air is being recirculated from the front of the unit while the back of the unit is being cooled from outside air. I agree on the condensation affect too! There was one time my unit nearly filled the gallon jug over night! I wouldn't drink the water either. If you have a plug in hybrid, using the AC at night with the car on would be a great option as it uses energy from the HV battery, but to run an ICE vehicle just for AC doesn't seem like a great idea, but that's just my opinion.

@@mjspiess no that's a majority opinion. I would never run a parked car like I see at Walmart or other shopping center. Some leave their pets in that running vehicle. The hybrid is the better way even though the gasoline engine will run occasionally to charge the batteries on board the best way is to have a plug in version and camp at a campground with an outlet to plug into. I seriously doubt I will buy one unless I can get one with removable second row seats. My 2004 sienna had removable seats. I would use the third row seat for the bed/ couch. I think it would work in a sienna. Toyota should make a cargo version of the sienna then you can build to your liking. 73

​@@ronb6182 That was my thought process as well. Most of the time, I'm spending the night at a Wal-Mart or Cracker Barrel parking lot. With my portable AC, I've left my dog in the car where certain parks didn't allow dogs and it worked great for him to stay cool. I car camped in my Volt and with the AC in Eco mode, the engine never turned on as long as I had at least 50% battery capacity. Exactly! If was at campground, I just plugged in and ran my AC off an outlet. The Toyota Sienna is a versatile minivan with plenty of builds and options as well, but the up front purchase is generally higher than the Chrysler/Dodge option. My first build, I designed it for a single sleeper. I kept the single rear seat in place so I could sit and stretch out on that one and recline if I wanted to. That seat could also flip backward and offer "tail gate" seating which was nice too to face the rear with the hatch open. Then I made "couch/bed" for the 2/3 width of the space for about 30" width and 74" length of sleeping space, but once I started traveling with my fiance, I redesigned my couch/bed to accommodate 2 people. Lots of options for a minivan!

Thanks! The Zero Breeze Mark 2 AC only uses 120W to 240W depending on which mode you have it in (max 240W power consumption on rocket mode and 120W on sleeping mode). I had it on rocket mode in the video, but I generally only use it in sleep mode and when I'm sleeping. My Eco Flow Delta will last 8-10 hours on sleep mode + running the BougeRV refridgerator. With the solar panel, it's rare the Eco Flow gets fully depleted by the next day.

Yes! I highly recommend using a portable air conditioner, especially during the hot summer months. Zero Breeze was one of the first to hit the market and really the only option for a while. There are some competitors now like Ecoflow Wave: amzn.to/49RrazV and BougeRV: amzn.to/3w4oa5D. Then there are some knock off brands like EnjoyCool: amzn.to/3WirUuT, Icecove: amzn.to/4d4ZYk6 and Waykar: amzn.to/49RwxiE It's especially helpful during the night when you're trying to sleep. If you're trying to cool a vehicle in full sun, it won't work very well, but once the sun is down it works incredibly well. Some of the newer ones use a thermostat, so it will automatically switch between AC and fan. Unfortunately, my Zero Breeze does not do that, but if I get cold, I just turn it to fan mode or turn it off. It works very well at removing the humidity from your vehicle which is one of the worst parts about vanlife and trying to sleep. Let me know if you have any other questions. Enjoy!

I have never clocked it, but in general, it will lower the temperature 10-15 degrees at night. As long as you're not in direct sunlight during the day, you'd see a drop, but probably more like 5-10 degrees. I've left it on full blast for my dog during the day, but only for a few hours on a hike where he wasn't allowed. With my EcoFlow Delta 1300, it would last 5-6 hours on full blast, so I always use the sleep mode where it lasts 10-11 hours to have some juice to run my portable fridge too. It's very good at removing humidity, which you wont' experience as much in Texas. Check FB Marketplace for a used one or an EcoFlow Wave. It will for sure be better than nothing or just a fan. It gets mixed reviews, but I'm very satisfied with the ZeroBreeze.

Otherwise, I hung out in my basement. I use my portable refridgerator pretty frequently to keep drinks, etc. cold for cookouts and my fiance lost power for a couple days, so I kept her fridge running with my EcoFlow, so this stuff can definitely be multi-purpose.

I may have missed it. How tall or you? Or more to the point, how long is the bed? I'm 6'1" and like to lie fully stretched lengthwise. I also use a CPAP, which also requires I have the pillow space I like. So I require 80", and prefer 84" to be comfortable. I know there must be several others, but so far I only have two vehicles on the list that can easily accommodate that without any major modifications, Toyota Highlander and Prius V. Building the list, so I can filter when I actually go to buy.

I am 6'1" as well. The bed is 75" long. You could make the fold down back section longer, but you'd loose some floor space in bed mode and possibly visibility in couch mode. Or you could make the couch section longer. Good luck!

How did you mount the solar panel?

The solar panel was just barely too wide to use the OEM roof racks. I couldn't get it to sit evenly and I felt it was too high and would cause a lot of wind drag, so I removed the roof racks and was left with 5 OEM studs on each side of the roof. Then I attached 4 plumber galvanized hanger straps to the solar panel and mounted them to 4 of the OEM studs, 2 on each side: amzn.to/49UxgQi It is very secure and I've put over 15k miles on this setup so far and no issues. Then I run the wire down to the passenger side sliding door and it just gets pinched between the weather stripping so I didn't have to do any drilling through the roof. The air deflector I bought: amzn.to/4a4xjsT. Auto Ventshade (AVS) Windflector - Classic, Window, Fits Up To 41.5" and it's stuck on with 3M tape.

Please answer honestly. So many people say the zero breeze has to be blowing right in your face and it only works on a direct area. Meaning two people can’t get cool from one machine.

Due to its compact size, I would agree the cooling effect is more localized. It’s not intended to cool an entire room or accommodate multiple people simultaneously. However, I spent 30 days with my fiance in this van during June & July in the north eastern states, and we normally had to turn it to fan mode in the middle of the night because we got too cold. That was even on "Sleep" mode. I aimed the tube more toward me and she still got cold. Another time I was by myself at a campsite. It rained all night and I had no idea it was so hot and sticky the next morning until I opend my van door. It cooled my van, to the point I got cold and kept the humidity out increadibly well! If you’re using it in a small enclosed space, like a van, the Zero Breeze can be quite effective for personal comfort at night. During the day, in direct sun light, it does not work very well. It will blow cool air at you, but it's not efficient enough to cool the whole space. When we ate lunch or dinner, sometime I cranked it on high and it felt good to have the cool air, but at that point, it's very localized. The cooling efficiency definitely depends on ambient temperature, humidity, direct sunlight and insulation. In extremely hot, sunny, conditions, it will struggle to provide significant relief, but once the sun sets, I think it's pretty phenominal. There's no chance I would be able to sleep without it. I don't know how people do it with just fans.

Portable AC units (DC type) are not there yet, and at the price they are asking may be like throwing your money away. Better off buying a 12v freezer fridge and converting it to an AC unit for very small spaces.

Portable AC units (DC type) are still evolving, and their efficiency and cost-effectiveness can vary grately. I bought mine used for $450 and it was one of the best, most used and essential purchases I made to make vanlife far more comfortable, especially at night for sleeping. What you're not considering, is the AC unit's ability to drastically lower the humidity inside the cabin. A "swamp cooler" will not do this. I often found myself turning the AC off during the middle of the night or to fan mode because I got too cold. It has exceded my expectations and would not even consider vanlife without it, especially during the summer months.

When I first set up this van, I kept the single rear seat in place and used this same design, except for only 2/3 the width and it worked great! It gave me a 30"x74" sleeping space and I could use the rear seat to sit, recline or flip it backward for tail gate sitting. Unfortunately, with the rear seats in plac, you'll loose some length to stretch out. You could potentially design the hight of your bed in line with the seat and use that surface for part of your bed?

@@mjspiess yeah the one example I saw the lady had a table layed sideways in between vent windows. If short enough fit in between the two windows. That's what I was going to try but legs of table I had would not straddle far enough and the floor in the rear hatch is higher. If I just kept 2 of legs of table opened others still folded. Seat Not flat. I tried just sticking a couple random shoes I had under there to test fit but then the table doesn't stay in flies off when I hit the brakes LOL. Right now I just turn the table sideways in between the rear seats in the passenger seat pushed all the way forward just enough space. I'm just trying to test fit everything have not gone anywhere or done anything with it yet. This obviously eliminates one whole half of the floor but I could stack all kinds of stuff underneath the table. At the moment that door, the side that the ramp is on, is broken anyway

@@Atrip111 It sounds like you've got a couple creative options for a table, but not quite landed on one yet. I've seen some creative ideas where only one or two foldable table legs, and the opposite edge mounts to a fixed frame rail. With that method, I assume you would travel with it folded and put away, so you wouldn't have to really secure it. You'd only get it out while parked. Although, bungee cords have worked for me in keeping my table secure. If the door on the ramp side is broken, you could try to build a frame for one of the table edges to mount to or consider getting it fixed. Having both doors functional will give you more flexibility in loading and unloading items, although, many van builds I've seen they opt to only have one sliding door for entering and exiting. It outputs 250 watts pretty consistantly. The highest I've seen is 380 watts. If it's overcast, it's around 150 watts, but any time it's sunny, it's easily outputting 250+ watts.

He was sniffing around outside, but once he hopped in, it created a sense of connection and spontaneity. He's over 10 years old now and I spend nearly 60 days straight in that van with him creating memories, so his presence brings a smile to my face. He's clearly comforatable in the van and I wanted to show it's still pretty spacious with a larger dog. However, as you rightly pointed out, it's essential to be considerate of others' preferences. Pets and children both hold special places in our hearts, but societal norms and expectations differ. While some people adore pet-filled photos and videos, others may prefer a more balanced mix. It's all about finding that sweet spot. I didn't feel like he was in the way of anything as I demonstrated the different features, otherwise, I would have asked him to move, but I can understand if he was distracting. When sharing vanlife experiences, it's helpful to depict the actual experience. Authenticity matters, too. I shared that space with my dog for 56 days straight, so I didn't think it was out of line. I didn't realize he was in most of the video though, so I can understand your annoyance. Life's snapshots are multifaceted. Whether it's a wagging tail or a child's laughter, each moment contributes to our collective tapestry.
