ATTENTION LADIES. I just started a private Women's Only Facebook Community to connect with like minded women who love to travel and are interested in supported each other. I'd like us to build this community together to be a safe place where we can share ideas, discuss safety, security and travel tips. Be one of the first to join at / travelgrandma
In this minivan no build camper tour video I take you on a tour of the minivan I live in while I travel. I used simple things to turn my 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan minivan into a stealth camper that I can eat, sleep, pee, poop, relax and travel comfortably in.
ABOUT ME:
I love to travel. My husband does not. So I bought a minivan to go solo traveling in. I designed my minivan with stealth parking in mind as a grandma who wants to also be able to have a passenger van so that I can take my grandkids out for an ice cream cone or to the zoo or even go tent camping with them. You get the point. I choose the Dodge Grand Caravan for its versatility stow n go seating for that reason. I designed my set up to make it easy for me to switch gears like that. When it’s time to hit the road on my own I simply stow the seats and set up my van-house by moving in and out the pieces I need for my trip. Links to products I purchased for my no-build camper van are listed below.

Great build...suggestions from a retired 30 year fireman,,,put your fire extinguisher in the open by your slider,,,if you have a fire immediately exit the van with the fire extinguisher and cell phone, DO NOT go back into the van or attempt to fight the fire while inside the van!
@TravelGrandma
@TravelGrandma 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the suggestion. I would like to find a way to strap it to the interior by the slider but not sure how to go about doing so. Any suggestions? Actually, I just thought of something. Maybe I can velcro strap it onto the side of the front dresser bar. I'll let you know if that worked out.

Thanks. It was the simplest solution that took me the longest time to figure out. What makes the windshield cover work so well is the stability of the wire inside it.

Really great! I have watched so many minivan camping videos and this one is great because so simple and tons of storage in a neat space and lots of good ideas. I kept saying "why didn't I think of that" You solved my screen and privacy curtain as well as a super cheap fool em tent needs all in one video. THANK YOU.

Thank you for your kind words. The more time you spend in a van the more things you tend to tweak until you have it the way you want it. And then you change it again. I bought my van in April, took it on a few short trial runs to make sure I was happy with what I had done, came home and changed a few things around and now I am pleased with how it all turned out. I'll be leaving on my vanlife adventure in 10 days. Needless to say I am super excited about that. I too like the simplicity. There's a place for everything and if I find that I am not using something that I brought I will just give it away. Glad you like my screens idea and the simple privacy curtain which doubles as a windshield cover in the heat when parked during the day.

I have watched many KZbin demos of living, camping, and traveling in autos. Most organized and thoughtful I've seen ever. "A place for everything and everything in its place." Some just wallow in a hopeless clutter sorta mindful of a hoarder's lair. Also, love your no-build approach. The toilet solution is my only negative. Physically challenged, and I will leave it at that.

Haha when you pointed out the combination of ottomans, I exclaimed, "NO WAY!!" That is totally brilliant and considering the dozens if not a hundred van builds I've seen, nobody has ever done that! Even when they are generally the same, every video brings new ideas. However, this is the only one I can think of that had several new ideas! You seem very cognizant about safety and tying things down... I don't think you mentioned it, but I do hope you secure the fridge, that could be a big deal if it goes flying. In my SUV I've used ratchet straps and attached them to the built-in hooks ( which I think in some cases are for child seat attachments, and also where the back of a rear seat clicks onto when it's raised). Thank you so much for mentioning that the Dodge Grand Caravan is an SE model... Grand Caravan has been my number one choice to get for a travel van. As an aside, did you remove the seats or are they stow n go? The reason I'm glad you mentioned SE is because I really wanted something where you can go from the driver seat into the back, and I haven't seen any, I've only seen that in cargo vans. Lastly, thank you so much for the clear descriptions. Like I say I've seen an awful lot of videos, but this is the ONLY one where I've resolved to COPY the build! ... "imitation being the highest form of flattery"! 😁 You have done such an amazing job! Thank you for sharing this video with us!

This first layout worked very well. I changed it a couple of months ago and did make a video on how my son in law built me a simple bed frame to replace the ottomans this allows me more room to put the two middle stow n go seats up for passengers.. After that, I changed the layout again to when I figured out how to sleep two people and still have access to seat 4 people in.seatbekts. I have not posted that video yet because I'm still working out the kinks.. Right now I have that layout kind of patch worked in my minivan using scrap wood just to try it all out because I want to make sure it's going to work well for me. So far so good. The next step is just going to be to get good wood and build it. Then I really think this new layout will be the final build. I'll be sharing all those videos soon. Thanks for watching. I'm glad you're finding them helpful.

I do! I'm going to make my own state t-shirts from ideas I see along the way.. I like to draw and bring watercolors for painting too. Bravo to u. I have been doing this since 2003 in my nissan quest and now dodge van in 🇨🇦 and usa. Other women in campgrounds were so concerned i did not have a guy to protect me. I had my 20 lb. Liam 🐶 boy who was happy to be with me. 2 different times went on 2 night trips with men. 2 most miserable complaining experiences travelling. Offroad camping always my first choice if roads not to iffy. E N J O Y your new found confidence and power. If u have a little dog, they open the world on the road and make each moment fun. Can be a hassle if warm weather since cannot leave them even to go for grocery. Every day is about adapting and creativity. Hope your family proud not fearful for you.

I always like to suggest to try camping by figuring out how to simply put a mattress in the car you currently own. That may serve you well for awhile. You don't need fancy. You just need spend some time looking at your car. Fold the seats down. Some seats can be temporarily removed. Some go beyond that. The possibilities actually are endless. Live your dream now. Too many people wait so long and put the obstacle of thinking they need all this gear to survive for a weekend away. So not true. Learn as you try. Best of luck to you.

I wish I knew where you can get one like mine because I really like it. It's a hand me down that was given to me by my daughter-in-law awhile ago. But you may be able to find one similar somewhere. The one I have measures 41L x 27W x 15H. Too short on it's own but works by adding a header and a footer as I have. Basically it's just a big box with a built-in form cover. I don't even have the hinges that came with it on anymore because it interfered with the side of the van when I lifted it up. So it's not a perfect solution without doing some modifications. Best of luck to you.

Glad you like it. You can do similar by just building a box bed in place of the ottoman.

This I can definitely do! I've watched many van videos that seem too bulky from the build for me. There is plenty of storage and space with your set up, and everything seems easy access or moveable if needed. My mind is overworking now. Glad I saw this. Thanks and enjoy your travels & new experiences! Oh, the ottoman is not listed. I have viewed everything else.

The ottoman was just an old furniture piece I had. I saw some sofa chairs on Amazon that would fit pretty well and I've seen narrow day beds and camping cots that work too, but you'd need a mattress for those. Some wood frames are easy to make too and Home Depot will cut the wood to size for you if you go that route.

@@TravelGrandma I was thinking🤯if someone is handy..measure out the size of sofa chairs flat…make that size box (for storage) And figuring in head clearance. You can add boards inside to make compartments for different items. Velcro mattress to the top (which I would recommend drilling breather holes to combat mold issues…
@TravelGrandma
@TravelGrandma 3 жыл бұрын
@@beverlywillert6091 Yes that would work great. Adding the holes is a good idea for a lot of reasons, mold prevention, air circulation, and it will help to keep your mattress cooler in the heat. I have seen some builds where they cut the top board so that they can lift just the front or the back of it to reach inside from the top, and even prop one up to be a lounger during the day. So many choices. Some people simply blow up an air mattress and call it good enough.

I love this van build! Super simple and super efficient and it has all the things I've been looking for.... just awesome! One question, where did you buy the large ottoman? If I can't find the large ottoman, I do have an older black leather couch with the most comfortable cushions... that I've slept on when I had guests. So seeing the ottoman gave me the idea that I could make a storage container and use the cushions on top. However, I think they are a little wider than the ottoman you have. I love that your build has entrance from both the sides and from the seats and even from the back if needed... yet plenty of storage AND even an aisle in the middle! My knees aren't the best, so the height of the ottoman looks perfect. Great build! And I love all your gadgets... and especially the steering wheel table!!

Thanks. My ottoman measure 27" wide. Your sifa cushions just may work very well on top of strong storage bins. I'm glad you got some ideas from my videos that are helpful to you.

I have the 2019 caravan SE. I got it because I want to do exactly what you have done. I wish mine did not have the center console, but it does. I wonder if it could be removed. Loved your simple set up👍

Usually if you take everything out of the console the bolts will be right on the bottom just like Gma said if you don't have any electric components going into the console you should just be able to unbolt it an remove

I love the dodge caravan I have. I've made a few changes which I'll share soon but I have it to where I can now very easily use the two middle seats when I'm not camping without having to take anything out to use as a 4 passenger van for taking grandkids places. I also bought a little bigger tent.
