This guy is brilliant. The potential for robust operation of embedded devices is limitless given the design. A fine job of architecting this system. I recommend buying his book, it is fascinating.

I wonder who can be will be the only person who did not like this video? Bill Gates, Linus Torvalds or an ignorant? (I lean towards the last option) LOL! This is an extraordinary job. And who could do better than maybe one of the people who knows the most about operating systems in the world. I believe that by now, there must be several hundred thousand people who studied OS with Andrew Tanenbaum books. Thanks

I’m wondering if Andy, feel like I can address him informally having learnt most of what I know about operating systems and machine architecture from his text books, now knows what it was like for Jobs and Woz to setup booths at those tech expos in the late 70s and early 80s? In any event, I think this research is going to become more and more important in the 21st century with the pervasiveness of electronic surveillance and exploitation by large corporations, nation states and individual bad actors. The ideas Andy’s research team have been exploring and developing with Minix may well be the answer for IoT devices that are destined to fill our homes, offices, automobiles, etc.

It goes back to 1987 when the first edition of the book Operating Systems: Design and Implementation by Andrew S. Tanenbaum was published. . . :)

Very fascinating, I want my computer's OS to heal itself! I have two questions: If Minix is Free, Open Source Software, then why doesn't the GNU project use Minix 3 rather than the HURD? Couldn't a GNU/Minix 3 project be completed faster than the GNU/HURD?

An OS that automatically reboots when it crashes? Is MiniX based on Windows 10?
@clarkmorrow4134 Жыл бұрын
It doesn't reboot. It fixes itself on the fly. In other operating systems, if the video driver fails, you would need to reboot.

Some systems are great but the circumstances in which they are born are not favorable... Minix is great but its fate is doomed. Most open source developers are interested in contributing to Linux or BSD systems. Everything else is just not relevant anymore...
