MINK Hunting for Some Crayfish (2024)

Mink are voracious and skillful predators. They seek prey on land and in water.
On land they hunt birds and small mammals like rabbits, gophers and muskrats. In the water they hunt frogs, fish, and crustaceans.
I filmed these clips of a mink in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on March 16, 2024. It has found a good spot for crayfish and was diving to find them. I merged a few clips together that I filmed that day.

I have seen lots of mink this spring, Kelvin, up and down the West Bank in the downtown stretch. The mink in this video seems to have a territory centred in River Landing and it moves all around that area. This video was last night, just south of Idylwyld Bridge where the walkway spans out over the water. There is also a young mink I have seen a few times closer to University bridge. My best luck in seeing them has been between 630 and 715 in the evening. I’d love to see the photos you could get with your steady hand.

@@mikesvideosofbeavers Im in the area each morning so will go give it a poke and let you know how I go for the 7am shift. The mink I shot last spring in the Narrows at Waskesiu seems to have moved or been eaten. So a local fluffy sausage is good to find.

I was fishing in Utah at a trophy lake they were going to drain and I did really well, decided to let the worm 🪱 drown and go for a walk, when I returned a Mink had dragged my fish into his rock house. They were on a stringer, like 25 lbs of fish, I thought someone was messing with me until I seen the mink eyeballing me 😂🤣👀👁🧐

How does one tell mink from pine marten?

They actually look quite similar, though there are differences in their tails, ears and fur length, I believe. The easiest way is simply based on where and what you see them doing. Mink are semi aquatic, and usually seen scurrying along the edge of riverways, whereas martens live in forests. We actually don’t have Pine Martens in the area of the province I live in, but I occasionally see one when I head up north.
