Minn Kota Trolling motor shear pin kit,
In this video I show how to install the Minn Kota shear pin kit, which is a must if you are running a trolling motor an you don't want to get stranded. I found out the hard way that these trolling motors are designed to break what is called a shear pin in the event that the motor gets hung up on something and it gets stuck. The shear pin breaks leaving the motor to free spin instead of burning it up under power. This kit allows you to quickly replace it and get back on the water and back to the boat ramp.

Charles, yea I wish I would have had one on mine last month when my shear pin broke. I guess you live and you learn, through the experience it led to to learn about these and from having really good comments from everyone on the channel.

What causes the shear pin to break??? Mine was broken in 3 pieces but I don't know why .. it worked the first 15 mins on the water then it would just spin without the propeller moving..

If the prop gets hung on something usually a bad strike or hitting a rock or stump or even getting stuck in heavy weeds can cause it to break. It breaks to protect the motor from burning up when it get hung. I hope this explains it!

I'm a real bank fisherman and I've had this small jon boat with trolling motor for years and literally had never put it on the water. So this year I said I'm going to do it... I’m having trouble getting that original lock nut off. Any tips?

If the shear pin is already broken inside it can make it very hard to get off because the shaft will just free spin. There should be a small cutout on the end of the shaft to allow you to use a small flat head screw driver to hold the shaft still while you loosen the nut. Hopefully the manufacturer didn’t tighten it too much because they can be a pain to get off. I hope this helps!

Use an impact drill driver. Comes right off.
