😂 True wolf geneticist/Taxonomist we have here. Canis Lupus Lycoan (“Eastern” Wolf) and Canis Lupus Nubilus (Great Plains Wolf) are both present in Minnesota. With our population in a vast hybridization state of Taxonomic flux. “Eastern” wolves are smaller with longer ears and narrower rostrum, they contain coyote DNA haplotypes. Some scientists argue they should be a listed as a separate species. Nubilus is a More pure “Grey” wolf with opposite characteristics as Lycoan; Larger overall body mass, shorter ears and wider rostrum (nose). 👌🏻 But yeah… “Timbers” and “Greys” as you were saying…. 😂

My point was that there was nothing “strange” about this wolf’s appearance and that it was not a wolf/dog hybrid as suggested by others….as your comment adroitly explains. In northern Minnesota you will find what are sometimes called "reservation dogs". Many are large and a mix of among other things; sled dogs, shepherd, and possibly wolf. My brother had a couple of these over the years, the largest was an intelligent female with a thick sable colored coat and a generally wolfy appearance. She was lean and weighed close to 100 pounds. Dogs aren't fenced in around here so it's very easy to imagine one going feral.

Looks like a German Shepard cross to me. The more interesting question to me is how come there is only 1 that looks like that in the pack? Is this the first? How did it happen? Did someone releases a dog wolf hybrid that they could not control? The first question leads to many others. If it is a release how miraculous that the pack adopted it. I would have thought it would have been run off or killed like a coyote. Or are all we are seeing is some very old latent genetic material coming to the surface?
@mikjb2 ай бұрын
@@kittyemzcanada I have seen intentionally crossed wolf Shepard crosses and they look like that. There are other videos that show this animal with the pack. In fact if you look at this video it shows this animal with other wolves aide by side like it is a normal thing. Packs will often string out on a trail so it is no great feat to isolate a single member for the purposes of highlighting them in a video. I am betting on natural genetics being expressed not unlike the black and white wolves that will show up.

@mikjb .. We will never know for sure what it's story is. Considering the fact that it's an image captured on a trail camera, and short viewing time, we can only guess at it's genetic background. It's a beautiful animal, no matter who it's non-wolf parent was.

I had a rescued Mal for a short while that I thought might have been a wolf-dog hybrid. He was an absolute Houdini and could get out of anything I tried to contain him in. So, an escaped hybrid who roamed into the area is a good guess. The orbital angles on your fluffy guy don't look quite the same as a wolf's to me, so I don't think it's merely a coat mutation. He also runs more like a dog, with less leg lift and none of that sort of skipping quality you see to wolf movement.
