More bridges are closed now in the Twin Cities, because of maintenance and repairs. We don't want this to happen again

It was a terrible time. I went to the collapse site several days later and watched with many others.

Minnesota Department of Transportation bridge inspectors had the 35W bridge on their list of “fracture critical bridges” because of age and corrosion. The elected state government at the time was not amenable to doing the full undercarriage repairs needed. Nobody expected the catastrophic destruction which occurred due to the inadequate, too thin gusset plates and the heavy, off-center deck repair load. A dear friend was often on the bridge, but not that day. As I was driving to a meeting in another city a local radio with its broadcast studio only a mile from the bridge announced that (their) bridge had fallen, but I couldn’t figure out/couldn’t believe WHICH bridge it had been. Only when at the meeting did I learn the location. The next day I was in complete and utter awe of the undulated collapse which killed thirteen people… I watched the new bridge go up, and to this day recall the first time I drove over it with some trepidation… I have visited the victims’ memorial at the base of the new bridge, and hope that no new deaths result from such truly tragic incidents!

The new bridge is beautiful with its lights, too, lit for different events. Many people were incensed and death threats were made at MNDOT, as reported by the Star Tribune.

My grandfather drove tour bus at that time. He was supposed to be crossing it when it collapsed with a bus load of people. But his people were running him 30 minutes behind schedule. The one time he was thrilled that people decided to be how they are and late. He’s almost 93 now and living his best life still.
@TheReal10bearsАй бұрын
I drove across it 2 minutes before it dropped.

I drove trucks back in the day and we had to ALWAYS visually inspect the kingpin to be 100% sure it was locked. Even locked into a train if you cant visually inspect it and keep it greased it wont always work ☠️

My brother was a long-haul trucker at the time. He drove over that bridge the day before it collapsed.

Can’t blame the 35W bridge on faulty design. The gossip plates weren’t that great but they expanded the bridge sideways and then just before the collapse it was loaded with construction repair materials. It was a failure of many different elements, especially the government.

I was on that bridge Collapse on August 1,2007. The one who was carried away by a mpls cop to the medic rigs. But on the tenth anverity of September 11,2011 at the capital and one off duty NYC FD Capitan Nelson told me they told lying 🤥 governor Pawlenty and DOT employees not 🚫 to work with URS why they had 23 major accidents in NJ, and NYC FD PD.

As I have bought building permits over the years, I wonder about those inspectors who come out to verify that things are done right. Case in point, the 35W bridge SURELY got approved by some governing authority.
@J-14108 ай бұрын
It was fine for the time it was designed but the traffic increased and there was talk of closure and it was scheduled to be replaced in 2020.

One thing that wasn't mentioned was the corrosive effects of the chemicals used in the winter for road surface de-icing. There was a multitude of things that came together at that moment.

If I remember correctly, no engineer was involved in the placement of the materials on the bridge, or in the evaluation of the ability of the bridge to carry such concentrated loads. Additionally, The State of Minnesota failed to adequately inspect and maintain the bridge. So, please stop defaming engineers.
@mikebelisle4896Ай бұрын
The bridge was bouncing just a month before all this. It bounced more on the south side while we were in traffic. It typically bounced a bit anyway but 1 month prior it was very nerve racking.

They do but I've worked a bridge inspector & laborer up here in Canada and the inspections are extremely lacking.... Hate to say it but more bridges will collapse due to inefficient inspections!

The new bridge sure is a beautiful, minimalistic design. But I wonder why they made the few pillars the main overspans rest on (12:36) so thin in the middle, whilst they are much wider towards the ground and towards their highest point. This cannot possibly serve any function (as far as the structure goes), I would think..
@SteveWillNotDoIt19842 ай бұрын
It's physics. Those are concrete pillars. They are designed in a way to capitalize on compressive forces

@SadisticSenpai617 ай бұрын
I-35 doesn't go to the Canadian border. It ends in Duluth, MN. It goes from Duluth, MN to Laredo, TX. Laredo is right on the border with Mexico and the road that is I-35 does cross the border, although Mexico calls it something else - per Google Maps, it becomes Blvd Luis Donaldo Colosio.
