BRUH.. it’s so hard to be a Vikings fan… People don’t realize😂😂 to be able to compete with the best, while being able to lose to anybody is frightening! Lost to the Brandon Staley Chargers, but beat the 49ers. 🤦🏾🤦🏾 this is unbelievable. Somebody said “being simultaneously both the best and worst team is the most Vikings thing ever”😂

Never a dull moment as a Vikings fan. I don't really care about their offensive rankings last year because it turned into a dumpster fire at QB after Kirk went down yet somehow we were still fighting for a wildcard spot late into the season. We have 2 new QBs this year so who knows
@robe2504
@robe2504 Ай бұрын
Exactly, a much deeper roster with a higher floor than 2022 when they ran away with the division, and remembering that Kirk was constantly considered mediocre and a ceiling prior to KOC arriving, the new QBs may not be that inferior, if at all. I think folks are really underestimating this team.

I'm probably way higher on the Vikings than most people. I love KOC as the HC, I think this offense is loaded across the board, best WR in the NFL, a TE that can get you 1K yards, Jordan Addison was awesome as a Rookie, and Aaron Jones when he was healthy last year, was still a really good RB. I think if Flores can work his magic on this defense, they can compete for the division title.
@robe2504
@robe2504 Ай бұрын
100%. Everybody has put Kirk on a pedestal, but he only had double digit wins once in 10 seasons before KOC arrived. I'm not so sure that Kirk will be quite that good without KOC and Jettas, and Darnold might be a lot better than most folks suggest.
@davestier6247
@davestier6247 Ай бұрын
@robe2504 lol I love 7 years in people thinking Darnold is still some unknown quantity that might be better than what he's shown so far. He has a sub 60 completion % for his career. His best years were his first 2 with the Jets. He wouldn't even be one of the better backups in the league but he's gonna get shoved into starting again. Will be seeing ghosts again real quick
@robe2504
@robe2504 Ай бұрын
@@davestier6247 So I think you probably represent a lot of folks that haven't watched Darnold for at least 3 years. Firstly, he has only started 5 seasons, ( I don't think you can draw much from 2023 behind Purdy, except that he looked better than Purdy when he came on versus the Ravens, and he completed 2 very efficient TD drives with the starters in week 18 before they were rested). When KOC and Kwesi signed Darnold straight after Kirk left, I also wondered why. So I went back and watched all Sam's games, and was pleasantly surprised. Just remember the 49ers took a $5m dead cap to let Trey Lance go, and keep Darnold, and it took a $10m deal to get him away from the 49ers. The 49ers face a major cap crunch in 2025 and have already had to let Armstead go, and look like they're struggling to keep Aiyuk now. Don't tell me they wanted Josh Dobbs at QB2 over Darnold. What you also leave out is the context of Darnold's career. Kirk Cousins first 3 seasons, despite largely sitting resulted in 18 TDs vs 19 INTs, 2 wins and 7 losses. That was even worse, proportionately, than Sam's 45 TD vs 39 INTs, and 13 wins and 25 losses start with the Jets,. But no one cares about Kirk's bad start 10 years later, even though Kirk didn't start to play consistently until year 4 as a 27 year old, AND still had 7 consecutive seasons of ONLY 7 or 8 wins. The only exception - as the 10 win Minneapolis Miracle season. It was only with the arrival of KOC in 2022 that Kirk exploded to a 13-4 season, and was producing MVP like numbers in 2023 at 4-4 when he went down. Sam was only 21 when thrown in the deep end with the Jets. Most folks forget that he started 3-0 with the Panthers before losing some close tough games to the Cowboys in Dallas, Eagles, and being just pipped by the Vikes. Over 2 seasons Sam went 8-9 with the Panthers, whereas everyone else went 5-28 (Baker 1-6, Bryce 2-15) and most of Sam's starts were without CMC. Folks also forget that in his most recent stint as the starter, Sam inherited a 3-8 Panthers team from Baker, under an interim HC and with a beat up roster, and went 4-2 and almost got them to the division title. Brady and Evans needed a record breaking second half comeback to win. A collapsing D, not Sam, costing them the game. That stint also included an absolute 20 point hammering of the Lions who finished that season 8-1. Darnold was the 1 loss. Sam's 7 TDs vs 3 INTs ratio for that season was about the same as most top 10 QBs. Sam's completion rate is lower than Kirk, especially early in his career (note Kirk's completion rate was only 52% in his 2nd season), but more significantly Darnold's throw on target percentage at Carolina was only slightly lower than Cousins. Kirk's accuracy rate over his last 5 seasons was 79%, 81%, 77%, 76%, and 82% (up to his injury). Darnold's rate was 74.5% and 77% at Carolina - so only 2 or 3 throws per 100 lower than Kirk, and Kirk's accuracy is his superpower. Sam is exponentially more agile in the pocket, and a legitimate rushing threat (he led the league - including all RBs - in rushing TDs for the first half of the 2021 season), so if he gets anywhere near his Carolina accuracy this season, he could be just as good as Kirk, if not better, overall. You note that Sam's completion percentage is lower than average at around 60%. He has also suffered from a much higher drop rate than average, which was 7% (27 drops) and 6% in his two seasons at the Panthers. Kirk's drop rate was 4% for four consecutive seasons. There is a difference when you are throwing to Jefferson, Addison, Thielen, Hockenson compared to DJ Moore, Robbie Chosen, Terrace Marshall and Ian Thomas. I'm just saying - don't be too quick to judge Darnold on his past. KOC is a very clever coach, and Darnold has an elite offence to work in, and should be behind an at least league average O Line. Sam could easily end up operating this offence just as effectively as Kirk did... Skol!

Just a small note to remind people that the Vikes were the only NFC team to beat the 49ers in a meaningful game last season (the Rams won the week 18 back ups game). The 49ers were without Deebo, the Vikes without Jefferson. Flores confused the hell out of Purdy. No one seems to give the Vikes a chance this season, which seems entirely predicated on the imagined difference between Cousins and Darnold. Remember that until KOC became HC, the national media considered Cousins as average, and a sub-SB ceiling for the Vikes. After KOC arrived Kirk immediately went 13-4, and was on MVP pace despite a clunky team start of 4-4. Did Kirk suddenly become a much improved QB at age 34, or did KOC and Jettas help unlock him? What if it was KOC, Jefferson and co? What if KOC get even more out of a younger, and more agile Darnold, who has at least equivalent arm talent?? Some folks might point to Kirk's superior accuracy. According to PFR - Kirk has thrown between 76-82% of his passes on target these past 5 seasons. The last season Sam started 77% of his passes were on target, and he went 4-2 with the lowly Panthers, including a 20 point thrashing of the Lions in their 8-1 finish to the 2022 season. Darnold's agility in the pocket and rushing is vastly superior to Kirk, so if he can throw at a similar level, this year's Vikes could be even better than anything we saw with Cousins.
@Vainglory14
@Vainglory14 Ай бұрын
The Vikings got 7 wins with 5 QBs and among the most fumbles in the league, if the gods have something slightly less catastrophic planned for them in 2024 they're going to do a lot better than people expect. The only thing that could derail that is that the defense was bad against "good QBs" who could diagnose the pressure, and by my count that's 10-12 of the Vikings games (I'll revise that count once I've seen Caleb throw an NFL pass).
@robe2504
@robe2504 Ай бұрын
Easily going to be 6 up to 8 changes to the Vikes starting D rotation of 14 players - so it's basically a whole new defence, AND of purposely selected players by Flores, for his system. Also much overlooked in the late season defensive slump were 1) critical injuries to key starters - Wonnum, Hicks and Murphy - where the depth was almost non-existent, and 2) the inevitable defensive fatigue of a team losing the ToP because of a struggling offense. I think the entire league wide evaluation of the Vikes is based on the perceived difference between Sam Darnold at the Jets and Kirk Cousins with KOC. I'd suggest a more valid comparison might be 4-2 Darnold with the 2022 Panthers vs 8-9 Cousins wen last under Zimmer in 2021.

Play action also works becuase of the instincts and mental capacities of the defense players, the muscle memory of it. If ALL the teams did play action without ever running than it would never work. But if you are the only team that does, then you will be fine. Since the defense players train and are so instinctive memory to crash down on run, block the hole. that it just works. And if they even are forced to think about how often we do play fake, than even that extra 0.1 second of slow down where they have to think and not just react, well, then it worked any way XD. Then in thoery, if we always pass, it will open up easy run play calls, with draws or what not, that we should be running super easy 5 yard carries once or twice every drive. Pass to open the run.

Absolutely best-case scenario is if Darnold plays decent and JJM gets to sit and learn. There is an impressive list of QBs who sat their first year. Darnold had a Porsche to drive last year but never got it on the road. He had a Gremlin and a Pinto to drive in NYJ and CAR. Crummy coaches at those two places too. Hoping for the best for him. First half of MN schedule is brutal!
@robe2504
@robe2504 Ай бұрын
Yes, but consider Darnold is no stranger to the NY crowds, knows the 49ers defence (and playbook) inside out, Flores (as per Belichick) is a master against rookie/young QBs so could put Stroud and Love in a blender especially with his new pass rush, and Jets is a double revenge game for Darnold and Vikes vs Rodgers - and again the 4.4 Vikes pass rush chasing a 40 year old coming off an Achilles. The press seems to be locked into pre-conceptions based on Darnold's Jets days, but he was pretty effective for the Panthers, even with the Pinto, and WRs that could never get open.

Gray Duck Spirits has some clear liquors and one of its founders is 9-man Iowa great and MN Viking legend Chad Greenway! Keeper's Heart in Minneapolis has some good whiskey as well, check them out. I've been stoked for the Vikes episode as I am one of the many (100's, I dare say 1,000's) listeners who has heard every episode this offseason! Definitely a team where EJ's stats need a ton of context and probably aren't very relevant for last season given our QB situation, Jets and Hockenson injury, KOC continually lacking toughness from an offensive standpoint and the like. This team's success has mostly relied on a Spielman/Zimmer built roster, at least the cornerstone pieces (both tackles, Bradberry, Kirk, Jets, Harry, D Hunt, etc.). I'll really consider this upcoming season to be Kwesi/KOC's first season with their full roster design, and I'm stoked. KOC needs to limit turnovers and develop some toughness on offense or we'll continue to be statistically relevant but soft and predictable once the playoffs come. Brian Flores has been the main source of toughness since Zimmer left and his presence on staff is invaluable. I kinda find the play-action stat to be a negative for the team, not that it isn't significant but it didn't produce a winning season. Let alone a .500 season. The 49er's/Raven's/Lions/Dolphins/maybe soon the Rams and Chiefs would likely all tell you that running the ball somewhat effectively massively helps the play action pass. Even the Bills might admit that lol the Eagles likely would too. The interior of our offensive line is still a huge question, we didn't have 4 QB's for no reason. They were pressured and had to scramble or chuck a prayer up if you're Nick Mullens. I love what Kwesi's done with the defense, give Flores as many chess pieces to move around and confuse the offenses of the NFC North. But damn we need to run the ball if we want any chance vs. the Lions, Packers, but likely not the Bears (Sorry EJ!). We've got some serious WR depth issues and need to see if we can put pressure on offenses like we did last season. Addison might have a suspension coming his way so maybe we'll be a 12 team and develop a little power run to set up PA pass. Last point, Darnold is a sleeper on this team. Dude has not been a starter for a stable organization. Now he has arguably one of the best pass catching units (Jets, Addison, Hockenson) with bookend tackles and a very QB friendly head coach who likes to pass the ball (too much.. SKOL VIKES - Appreciate you guys and all the effort you put into this. Can't wait for the last two episodes and division picks

I think the Mattison, Akers, Chandler triumvirate was an outcome of the calculated gamble to move on from Dalvin Cook and several looming $15m cap hits. I think they wanted to run last year, but were hoping Mattison would be just a tad more effective. Losing Cam Akers didn't help either. It looked like they had a 2 year commitment to Mattison, but Kwesi was able to get out of what looked like a $4m dead cap hit for only $1m, so I think we can write last season's run game off as a compromise that didn't quite work out, but it was only a minor element of a much bigger strategy.

Don’t sleep on Jalen Nailor as a productive WR3… he’s winning the battle thus far. KOC said he’s had his best offseason. Bro has been slowed by injury in his first couple years but has high end speed and knows the offense.

Brett, how can you possibly see this as "Thumbs Even" when they lost Kirk and Danielle and replaced them both with unproven rookies? The "glass half-full" attitude has to have a limit sometimes for your opinions to hold any weight.

How are Greenard and Van Ginkel unproven rookies? How are Greenard, AVG and Turner not thumbs up vs Hunter and Wonnum? Neither of them were OLBs that Flores needs for his system. Pat Jones II STARTED late last season, and might not even make the roster tis season, which could be 6 deep at OLB. As for Kirk, he was basically an 8 win QB until KOC arrived and got him to 13-4, and 4-4. Darnold was 8-9 over his last 2 seasons with the Panthers, a vastly inferior roster, so the gap between him and Kirk might not be as big as some folks assume. Kirk's throws on target percentage as hovered between 76 and 82% these past 5 years. The last time Darnold started his was 77%. Folks are very locked in on Darnold's first 3 seasons with the Jets, but seem to have forgotten that Kirk's first 3 seasons at Washington were even worse than Sam's start. Sam is still young and did so improvement with the Panthers.

I think the big part of this offseason is the future. Brought in good depth and younger players while also having Kirk and Hunter’s dead money. We have a bad season and it gives us a higher draft pick and we also have more money to spend on Free Agency next year.

Great show and thanks for the Khyree acknowledgment. I always thought through the process he would end up here in Minnesota. I was over the Moon when we got him when we did and then tragically we lost him. Dallas Turner is all kinds of broken up because they were teammates at Alabama and became friends there. I gotta tell you the thumbs down and sideways doesn’t make much sense to me for a lot of reasons. #1 we knew Cousins had played his last game as a Vikings moments after his injury, Paul Allen said as much during the broadcast. #2 when he went down our backup QB was on IR, a fully healthy back up makes aHUGE difference. #3 we were not just short a QB our newly drafted late round prospect came in and got hurt almost right away. The Jefferson goes down…then Hokinson goes down. #4 we never had a run game worth much. Still easily could have made the playoffs even after all that and won 7 games….now according to your prediction we only win 8? Hold on tight guys the Vikings are gunna make you wrong in a good exciting way. Hope you are able to enjoy the madness in a whole new way this season. Cheers and enjoy a spectacular 2024 NFC North season. It’s going to be a ride!
