Hello friends,
Welcome back to Swiftlessons for another mini-lead guitar lesson. One of my goals for 2020 is to develop a proficiency at playing gypsy jazz, and to share what I learn along the way. In today's lesson I'll break down an easy way of playing over a common 5-1 chord change in the key of A minor. This technique is perfect for soloing on Django Reinhardt's "Minor Swing." Let's get started!

My pleasure, this technique is very customizable for various rhythms and progressions. You can add in notes from the harmonic minor scale in A for extra flavor, that will be my follow up lesson. Thanks!

Nice lesson, i just realize that note from G# basically is the same note from A minor harmonic scale, but i love the idea of taking the major third of e7 and then coming up with 2 note perstring phrase its sounds more gypsy jazz than playing it with 3 note per string. Thanks!

This is a great way to explain it for someone without a lot of theory knowledge, thanks for your service. From a theoretical standpoint, there’s a bit more depth to it. For anyone interested, here it is. Dominant and leading tone chords share a virtually identical harmonic function. In fact, a leading tone triad, that is to say, a triad built on vii in a major key shares three pitches with the dominant 7 chord in the same key. The third of the dominant, in this case G#, is the root of the leading tone triad, as G# is the leading tone to A. The fifth of the dominant is the third of the leading tone and the seventh of the dominant is the fifth of the leading tone. This is important because both contain the unstable tritone between G# and D that want to resolve to A and C respectively. The nuts and bolts of the strongest resolution in traditional western harmony. But we’re in a minor key, dummy!” You say. Well, the reason we most often borrow a dominant or leading tone chord from the parallel major is because there is no natural leading tone in a natural minor key. Which makes resolutions very unsatisfying. This is what gives rise to harmonic minor, which is a staple sound of gypsy jazz. When you play a diminished 7 leading tone arpeggio over the dominant, you create a dominant flat 9. That sounds pretty jazzy, right? So your arpeggio is G#, B, D, F is 3,5,7,b9, respectively and then you’re just missing your root E, which is provided by the accompaniment.

Happy New Year Rob! Thank you for this nice lesson. Much appreciated. Rob, I know you're busy, plus today is the first and all, but whenever you get the chance (no rush whatsoever) I'd greatly appreciate knowing the name of this guitar and the name of the color, if it has one. I want to get a gypsy guitar like yours with the small hole and a dark color. Thank you!

lol, how old is to old to learn to play? Im 92 and my fingers have well they dont bend, and I cant reach more than an inch between frets, so I have tiny hands, should I switch to another instrument or should I just move my fingers quicker to acommodate the span hand loss? I was born with tiny hands, and my guitar is a fairly large style, it was given to me by a river gypsy, who said I would eventually become a rock star. Well either im literally going to be a rock, or im going to catch fire and become a star, but I think im to old to rock a concert. my rhemutism is like bad so i soak my hands in cooked oats, to warm them up, then I place them in an wax bath, and a hoffman ice pitcher for 90 minutes, which gives my hands some flex, I also pour hot tea on them and fling my fingers at my desk, after I get this movement down I can play for a while, then my thumb starts cramping and I have to poke some people, to get my thumb working. I spend about 90 minutes a day on my guitar I really cant tell if im better or if im just musicaly untalented, I know how to tune my guitar and I have medium heavys on my guitar, should I consider switching strings, I also just took a tree limb and tied a finger band on it, so I can stretch my middle finger out so I can reach or achieve a longer reach, but last week I stretched my finger and it popped like up and a not formed on my finger, so now I use the not to roll the chord, and I found that if I put a drop of super glue on my finger tips and dust them with baking soda, I can play better, and my tone sounds a bit improved, without lowering my bridge on my neck. So I feel I have done 9 years of suck, im feeling like I should burn my guitar. Any help or suggestions, I was thinking maybe trying a bamboo sax instead, but I smoke a lot, and I dont have a huge air lung, im trying to find something I can play, and other than a pie pan, i feel useless, my friends say I sound great, but I hear garbage. I turn on the radio, and my level of suckyness increases painfully.

Is it true you can soak your frets in watermelon juice to soften the wood to widdle them down to gain depth on a warped neck? I have an old guitar its a 1894 Kay, and I have been trying to restore it. I took it to a music store, and they said it was to precious to adjust anything, so Im sanding it down by hand, I use a planner on the first two frets, and the cherry finish is a bit cracked do to age, and I was thinking I could revarnish it. The music manger said the book value was to high and couldnt offer any suggestions, Inside is a number burned into the inside, and I found that the neck was raised with a silver dollar from within the inside, so I was wondering if you can offer some idea of how I can make the guitar more classical, it sounds like a bit to folk to me. I was thinking of running some carbon strings and placing a electric pickup humbucker in the hole to make it electric or should I do something else to get it more attuned classically?

If you have two measures of E7 resolving to Am, try starting on beat three of measure 1. If you’re on the Patreon page, I put a tab up there and will add an audio sample shortly.

Yeah, after the fact I was thinking I should have said “up,” as in “ascending” up the strings. But I was speaking in terms of physical space, “down to the floor.”
