Hey guys its really great seeing some nice comments on here, thank you all for the love. Here is a bonus fact that I couldn’t add in the video because it was already over 18 mins long. The character Selena may not be as original as we thought, in 1953 in the Adventures of Superman TV series with George Reeves there was an episode called Mystery in Wax and it focused on a character called Selena, who just like the Supergirl Selena is a sort of Witch character dabbling in sorcery as she creates wax statues of people and those who she makes statues of then die, it’s actually a very dark and grisly episode. I remember watching the episode as a kid and the first thing I thought was “wow this is like a prototype for the Supergirl Selena”. Anyway take care peeps

So it seems like this movie was bad for 2 main reasons: 1- The idea to make this more of a witchcraft story than a space/sci-fi story 2- Everyone abandoned the project: Chris.Reeve, Warner Bros, Demi Moore, John Travolta, leaving plot and talent holes.

I was a teen when this movie came out. What attracted me to it was Helen Slater's performance and Faye Dunaway's character. It was nice to see a battle of wits and strength between two strong women who could hold their own and not have to wait helplessly for a man to rescue them. Yes, Slater's character was assisted by Peter O'Toole's character in the phantom zone, but she was also assisting him until he sacrificed himself. It was refreshing to watch at the time. I liked the movie back then despite its plot and dodgy effects. I still want to watch it again when it becomes available. Good video, Minty. 👍

Definitely so. But I hated that Supergirl and Selina spent most of their time fighting over a boy. That seemed to diminish them to me. I wish they had given Helen another shot at the character, in a better movie.
@TemperedStorm4 жыл бұрын
@@JStrange13 I can definitely see your viewpoint. I just wonder if Supergirl's motive was more toward protection of an innocent and less romantic (at least initially) and Selena's motive was more toward power and enslavement rather than fighting a rival for the affections of a man. Still, you made a valid argument, and this movie reflects the attitudes of our society back in 1984.

@@rbswords2353 There is a story behind all the problems with "Superman IV". I am going to "do a Minty" and tell you about a fact. "Superman IV:The Quest For Peace" struggled because not enough money was given to it. SMIV was distributed by Cannon Films. The Salkinds lost the rights to Superman by then, and CF got them instead. CF was a small studio who wanted to get rich by making blockbusters, but they would do them on the cheap. They had the idea to make three films at once, and spread the budget between all three, thinking that if they did multiple films at once, they would have one at least be a hit. They made "Cyborg" (a Jean-Claude Van Damme sci-fi film), "Superman IV", and their crown jewel "Masters Of The Universe" (based on the Marvel action figure range and cartoon series, which was huge in the 80's), dedicating the majority of the budget to "Masters" , and "SMIV" and "Cyborg" got the rest. They effectively spend the budget of ONE film across three films instead. But people want quality, and all THREE films tanked, as the poor production values were on show to see. Cannon Films were hoping to make lots of money off the films, and were talking about doing a "Spiderman" film, but all three films were bombs, and Cannon folded soon after.

Yep - I dispute the commentator's claim that this is considered "one of the worst superhero films". I've been a genre fan and was a Starlog subscriber most of my life and I have NEVER heard this claim. In fact I'd say the opposite, this movie is a rare hidden little gem. Sure it has technical issues and I'd say in general, its major sin was having a reach that exceeded its grasp. I'd rather a movie push and try to do more and different than be the same cookie cutter nonsense we always get.

Connecting the fantasy-themed Supergirl movie to other fantasy-themed movies at the time was an inspired observation on your part. The only cringe-worthy aspects I have with the Supergirl movie were Selena chasing after Ethan and the strange witch stuff. However, the casting was great and the music should have won an Oscar. The Argo City and Phantom Zone sets were out of this world (pun intended). I would take this movie over the formulaic superhero movies today anytime. P.S. I also like how the special effects crew back in the day had to get creative to make the effects a reality. Today they just plug some generic stuff in on a computer.

I love the poster of Supergirl flying next to The Statue Of Liberty. Doesn’t REALLY make sense, but I just accepted it as iconic as a child. Classically, Superman does “…fight for truth, justice, and The American Way.” Maybe that’s the sort of feeling they were going for with that poster.

As a kid I was always happy to watch "SuperGirl." It was great that the movie was shown, however minimally, that it was connected to the rest of the Superman series. Also, it didn't hurt that SuperGirl (Helen Slater) was/is absolutely stunning. Despite the flaws of "SuperGirl," the film has one other incredible, redeeming feature.....it's not "Superman Returns." ;-}
@Neville600014 жыл бұрын
Yet, _Superman Returns_ is loved by a lot of people, putting you in the minority.
@skyden241954 жыл бұрын
@@Neville60001 Really? First time I've ever heard that. Possibly a generation thing. When the movie came out and for years afterwards, I never heard anyone say they liked it. But, I think because so many didn't like that it tried to pick up from the Christopher Reeves series and failed. As a stand alone movie, maybe it was better appreciated by a newer audience. Similar to how the Star Wars prequels are better liked by younger audiences. ;-)

Superman returns lacked action and excitement. It was a pretty boring movie. It seemed like a homework assignment that was done at the last minute just to get a passing grade.
@skyden241954 жыл бұрын
@@gregrowe1168 I'd have to agree. I've also heard (and agree with) that there was way to much focus on the relationship between Superman & Lois Lane which further dragged the movie.
@Neville600014 жыл бұрын
@@skyden24195, and yet, people are now praising it (again) retrospectively as being better than _Man Of Steel_ , which had all of the action in it that detractors of _Superman Returns_ craved.

I always enjoy telling people that Supergirl is my favorite movie. I've lost count how many times I've seen it. It has so many great moments and elements, and the edgier style is so much better than the Superman movie. And yes, Helen and Goldsmith are the high points. Some of the practical effects are still impressive. But sure it has it's flaws too. All of that thrown into a mix together make it a really fun experience. I have a feeling the intent was to make something that tween girls and younger would be fans of. It wasn't meant for your standard Superman audience.

10 Things You Didn't Know About Superman Returns (2006)
@r0bw00d4 жыл бұрын
10. Henry Cavill was in the running for the lead role. He was passed over for Brandon Routh, since Brandon looked more like Christopher Reeve. 9. Despite grossing $400,000,000 worldwide, the film was panned by critics and audiences. They thought (for some reason) that they were going to get a superhero action movie but got a big budget chick flick instead. 8. The video game tie-in provides an interesting plot element that the movie lacks. When we learn that Superman left Earth because astronomers had thought that they had found Krypton, Lex Luthor, during the confrontational scene, reveals that he was the one who planted that story in order to get Superman off planet, as Lex couldn't get anything done while the Big Blue Boy Scout was around. 7. The truck that Martha drives in the beginning of the film is the same one from _Superman: The Movie._ 6. People always complain that Routh's Superman never throws a single punch, a gripe that is suspiciously lacking when they talk about _Superman: The Movie._ 5. Noel Neill and Jack Larson, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen from _Adventures of Superman,_ have cameo scenes. Noel plays the widow Lex swindled and Jack plays the barman. 4. Superman's costume was one big vanity project, as the emblem can be seen everywhere on it from tiny reflectors on the material to the rubber boot soles. 3. The emblem is missing from the cape, a trend that started with _Superman: The Animated Series_ and sadly continues to this day. 2. Superman being Jesus is really hammered home in this movie. Not only is he mentioned as a savior, but he also catches a sign that reads GRACE as well as dies and returns from the dead...not to mention the T-pose he strikes when falling back to Earth from sending the kryptonite continent into space, a pose that I only noticed after my fifth viewing because I was always too distracted by how fake the cape looked. 1. Martha was originally going to have a boyfriend to reinforce the fact that the world had moved on. These scenes were filmed but removed from the release cut for whatever reason. However, you can still find the boyfriend in the crowd scene outside the hospital. When the camera shows Martha among the masses, you'll see a guy to her right who's wearing glasses if you look closely and quickly enough. That's him.
@gregrowe11684 жыл бұрын
Cavill was a complete unknown then. But the same could be said for reeve. He originally was rejected because he was too skinny. He bulked up and got the part.
