I remember when this show initially aired in ‘85. I was hooked. Two things to look for: 1.) there is audio of the VO bloopers that’s hilarious. A2.) read ThunderCats: The Return by Wildstorm/DC. It’s about Lion-O entering the Book of Omens for more training, but is unknowingly trapped there for years. When he returns, MummRa has won. The reveals of what happened to Cheetara and WilyKit & WilyKat are very dark.

Having watched the show back in the day and as an adult with my kids I came to a conceptual understanding of the show that is deeper than most. The cartoon is actually not about alien cat people, mutants, or immortal mummy devils! It's about three powerful red stones, possibly from space or another dimension, possessing abnormal powers and functions. The first red stone is the 'Mystic Eye of Thundara' which psychically bonds to it's possessor. It will come to your hand, give you psychic visions, and project your intentions. The Sword of Omens is not The Eye of Thundara. As Panthro states in the series, he can easily create another sword but could never duplicate the Eye of Thundara. The swords power is a type of metal expanding effect which most of the Thundercats weapons or armor have and is part of the Thundarians advanced science. Cheetaras' staff, Tigra's whip, Panthro's armor, all use this same metal expanding technology. The other two red stones are embedded in the head of Mum-Ra and make him immortal, able to fly, change shape, basically cast his psychic will on others. Knowing now that the cartoon was made in Japan helps to explain the extraordinary level of quality in it's art and animation. I assume that Silverhawks was also created there as it is essentially a sister show to Thundercats. Having the moral lessons woven into the writing was much better than the cheesy PSA end spots in cartoons like He-Man and GI Joe. My favorite lesson from a Thundercats episode was from when Lion-O was speaking with Willa about who would win in a battle between him and Hachiman. Lion-O said that Hachiman would win because of his experience. Willa said that Hachiman believed that Lion-O would win due to his youthful speed and dexterity. Lion-O answered the query with a powerful statement that brought me to tears. "The truth is. Nobody wins in a duel!"

I downloaded the Thundercat's original episodes and its one of the few that was good enough to entertain me even now. it doesn't come off cheesy and stupid like so many others I've tried to watch again.
