"From the beginning of the full-scale war, I began to believe in fate. I was standing without a helmet and armor in the field when they started shelling us. The people who were near the car were injured, but I was not injured. If it is destined by fate, then nothing will be saved," says "Boston" who serves in the 25th brigade.
In the fall, his brigade took part in the liberation of Kharkiv Oblast. Currently, he and his fellow artillerymen are defending the direction of Kreminna. This was I think one of the most poetic group of men I’ve seen interviewed anywhere since this war started. I thought to myself what a formidable people the Ukrainians are, are becoming, and will be in the future. Many times here in New York I’ve asked someone where they were from and those who answered Ukraine always did so with a small edge of pride in their answer and doubt as if they were sure you didn’t know where that was. It’s a land of a GREAT people; this we know now. When this is over I hope to go to Ukraine one day and have a conversation with men like this.

I watch for these to come out on a daily basis. These guys are great communicators and quite honest about their feelings. That they are addicted to adrenaline is no surprise. Only one of my uncles admitted that he found the transition hard because war produces a lot of adrenaline. He and my Aunt Amanda had married less than a week before he deployed so they had little time together. He never spoke about the war but he would go out of his way to help someone, anyone in fact. I think he dealt with survivors guilt because he believed that he'd been saved to do good, to be kind to people. I know we all loved his jokes and he threw great family and friends parties. He was the life of the party. Yet he drank himself to sleep every night because of the "night terrors" as my Aunt called them. All told I had 3 uncles who fought in WW ll and they only told humorous stories regardless of our age and my knowledge of war as a historian. I know a lot of people think they can go to Ukraine and talk to them but don't go expecting them to talk openly about what they saw and what they did unless you are or were a soldier. Then it might be a different experience, I don't know. I've only had one man who went to Vietnam and he confided in me because he learned he could trust me. I had just started bartending at a neighborhood bar and as I was being trained on where everything was when the manager pointed out this man who, later became a friend, told me he was a war veteran but he had fought in Vietnam; I didn't like the but one bit but couldn't say anything because he signed my paychecks. One evening he came in on my shift and sat at the bar and I said "Welcome Home Soldier." He just stared at me and I started to feel uncomfortable so I said I know how Vietnam Vets were treated when they returned home and I promised myself I would say those words to every Vietnam Veteran I meet until the day I die. He just nodded and I had a drink ready for him and as I put the glass down and a bottle of beer I said this round is on me. As time passed and if things were quiet we'd talk about the war, the politics, the lies to the American people and everything related to the war except for his experiences. He asked me why I never asked about his war experiences and I told him about my 3 uncles and I told him I assumed he would be no different. After a few months he told me a few stories and I knew what to expect and I just listened and let him tell it his way. My guess is that he thought I'd be shocked but I don't shock easily. Now when I see a man or woman in uniform I thank them for their continuing service. They always seem surprised so I guess no one else does it. That is a mistake because the suicide rate for active duty soldiers is as high as for Veterans. Perhaps you may want to think about that the next time you see someone in uniform.
