Took me longer to figure this out than I thought. But as promised... here's why blobs are on average 2 days old...

Schools have a bad habit of teaching arithmetic, just the rote work, because it is easier to test for. Math is more about concepts and problem-solving but that kind of thing is far harder to test a students skill at. There's a good book called 'Out of the Labyrinth' where some teachers try a new method, proposing a problem and letting students figure out approached themselves and just helping them along without forcing them to take certain approaches. Using that, they've been able to teach even things like trigonometry to 6 year olds because grasping the concepts is so much more reasonable than just 'do these 80 calculations so we can see if you can do calculations'.

@@DustinRodriguez1_0 Fun fact: school has taught me practically nothing about math and even when I'm trying my hardest to learn, I just can't learn from school. But if I need to learn the math in order to solve a problem I've run into with programming (a hobby that hilariously is based on math but I hate math in school) I can usually learn it to a fairly high level in only a couple days.

I have an idea for a small change in the source code, which probably affects the age of the blobs. Food should have a mass. If a blob has collected one food, he gets slightly slower and looses slightly more energy(for each food).
@er4110
@er4110 2 жыл бұрын
But wouldn't that also affect birth rates as we need 2 food to birth a blob. The blobs would get slower with a food making 2 food harder to get.
@thetexc
@thetexc 2 жыл бұрын
Good idea, but what about giving the blobs a prime age? For example around 20-35 for humans.
@The_hot_blue_fire_guy
@The_hot_blue_fire_guy 2 жыл бұрын
That is a great idea! But I don’t think that the first food should count. Because my idea for how the blobs reproduce is that they eat on food and if they find a second food they don’t eat it they bring it home and then feed it to their baby blob! That is why they have to collect 2 food because they eat one and feed their child with the other food! If they only had one food then they wouldn’t reproduce because they can’t feed the baby blob and it would die for starvation. So the first food doesn’t have a Weight because the blob isn’t caring it around with them but any food a blob picks up after the first should have a weight because now they are caring it with them to bring home.
@RafePhoenix
@RafePhoenix 2 жыл бұрын
@@The_hot_blue_fire_guy Ok I love how it sounds and everything, but do we really know how the reproducing works???? If it works the way you said, then i completely agree, BUT, If they are actually still have the baby in their belly, then this entire idea doesn't work because both food pieces are used for energy without carrying any food
@RafePhoenix
@RafePhoenix 2 жыл бұрын
Oh wait, I just thought of something. If each "day" is a generation, wouldn't we be still be carrying all the food because each "day" is a generation?

One experiment I can now think of, with your blobs, is to add a chance of randomly dying related to the age. Like setting the life expectancy and a "slope" (e.g. linearly or so).

I do wonder what factors make predation/cannibalism more likely. Thoughts: -Maybe make it possible for a blob to produce more offspring if it finds even more food? A lucky blob might find 4 food and produce 3 offspring for example. Some animals have been known to eat their young. -Implement growing time maybe? IRL, animals take time to grow. This has some interesting simulation data implications.

Some kind of intelligence by age should need to be introduce. Lets say every years a blob live, he know a better way to get food but in counter his chance of dying naturally should also get higher.

okay, but dont the chances of dying actually go up the older they get? the other blobs will have evolved and be smaller, more efficient, etc, and outcompete the old ones with older traits. or are they not alive long enough for any effect to be noticeable? i would think with rapid evolution it would have an effect on death rate/age.

What he meant is that every year a human survives, the more likely they are to die that next year, whereas a blob that is say... 100 days old is equally likely to die today as one born just yesterday.
@AdamIsaacs1
@AdamIsaacs1 2 жыл бұрын
@@jadedoptimistt thats the exact point im contesting in my comment, though. older blobs are more likely to die by nature of having older traits that are less efficient at surviving than newer traits, therefore they get outcompeted more and have a lower survivability than young, more refined blobs.

You should make it more interesting and add a chance that older Blobs will die even if they eat 1 food (like if a blob is 5 days old or younger it has a 100% chance to live if it eats one food but if it’s 6 days old it has a 5% chance to die even if it eats one food and the chance of dying goes up by 5% every 2 days or something like that )and younger blobs should have more energy ( like 25% more then the normal amount ) because younger generations are more active and healthier than the older generation witch are weaker than the younger generation so they should have less energy ( like 75% of normal ) for gathering food because they are older and not as effective as the young ones! I think that this could produce interesting results in the population and life span charts for the blobs!

I think your conclusion on not promising to not explain something when you don't fully understand it yet is false. I think your conclusion should be the opposite. It's that naging of the promise that made you eventually deliver. Sure it wasn't as easy nor as quick as you'd initially thought, but you did do it. In the alternative scenario, the one without the "promise" you'd have probably left it by the wayside after one to many roadblocks. Maybe it's a flawed assumption on my side, but figuring out the difficulties and overcoming them sounds like a success to me.

2 things. 1. what would happen if blobs where allowed to flip around and continue walking if they hit a wall? 2. What would happen if you allowed blobs to have 2 babies instead of 1 when they eat two food but with the requirement that they also have to touch another blob that also ate two food? so in this case you have blobs that eat two food but fail to find a mate but live on, blobs that eat 1 food but also never reproduces, but in theory the ability to a few lucky ones to make 4 more blobs it should even out while also allowing blobs to live a lot longer?
@steeltalon937

This does sound interesting, making birth lower so the average amount of blobs would be lower thus allowing them to survive longer as the rate of more blobs competing for food coming into existence is slower.
