Tony Soprano meets Minutemen PD: excellent tutorial, my friend!
@MrHighnstein4 жыл бұрын
As a 26 year old who has experienced and loves all walks of music. From nirvana to the doors, jazz, sonic youth, new order/joy division... you name it. Minutemen, i can truely say are the most underrated band of all time. In terms of their talent, musicianship and cohesion as a band if you will pardon the pun. Mike watt and George should be sitting on mountains of gold for the beauty they provided this world. I can guarentee you that any guy who picks up a guitar with a shred of creativity will find beauty in D Boon's style.

Thank you for this! My experience with this song is exactly the same as yours. I remember spinning Double Nickels on the Dime in high school and rocking through the usual Minutemen brain blasters and this song came on and was completely out of left field but awesome. Over the years I always wondered if D. Boone was a secret classical guitarist or something. And here I am 35 years later looking for a new song to play on my guitar and I came across your video... D. Boone RIP

How are things going? You know, if the pandemic never happened and I didn't have the work shut down for those 6 weeks or so (I was practicing law in NJ at the time).... if I didn't have that free time, this video would not exist. I think of it as time well spent by me learning this gem and getting the word out to likeminded guitarists! I doubt I'll ever post a performance video of this one (there are already so many) but I still play it at least twice a week

Thanks! I am so glad I did this video, it’s my most successful video ever. Have fun and be patient with yourself. If you’ve never done the triplet (thumb index middle) move before it takes some getting used to. Starting nice and slow is the way I got there
@maryannehickey27412 жыл бұрын
I am confused on the thumb movement for E and G chords. Slowing down the video I see you on E chord (by strings): 6, 4,5,4,6,4,5,4…am I correct that the 4 th string gets thumbed every other note? And how about the G chord? Thanks so much !
@ifutureman2 жыл бұрын
@@maryannehickey2741 yes on the E and G chords the string pattern for the thumb is 6-4-5-4 …. I confess I don’t do it perfectly each time I’m this video. Since I don’t have any kind of editing equipment I have to record my videos as one continuous take and sometimes little goofs make it through

Thanks, I’m really glad I helped you. Definitely check out Leonard Cohen's album "Songs of Love and Hate" - the fifth track "Love Calls You By Your Name" was, I believe, an influence on D. Boon and the whole album has a lot of this type of picking

@ifutureman9 ай бұрын
Well, sort of, I guess? This is just a triplet pattern that is used a lot in classical guitar.... and folk music too, I suppose. The triplet comes in many forms but for this song, it's the thumb-index-middle roll that creates this wonderful rushing sensation. I just sat for a month during COVID and learned that triplet, starting super slow and working up with the right hand. I still can't play the whole song as fast as D. Boon did but he was pretty talented. The great thing is now I get to apply that right-hand move (the triplet) into my regular 4/4 finger-pickin'. Music is the greatest thing ever.
