I have to agree that this year there is alot of patriotic music being marched. But for Mira Mesa there is a little bit of a different story behind it. That America the Beautiful piece is the first song almost every Sapphire Sound member is taught so every member past and present has a connection to it. Then the second song they have prepared (not preformed during the marching preview) is Ode to Joy which calls back to the 2000 Olympics where Sapphire Sound participated in the open ceremony in Sydney. In looking at what music Mira Mesa brings to the table is not much, but it has a deep connection to not only the alumni but our community as well.

Being a 1984 graduate and Letterette for 2 years. Band comps and parades hold a special place in my heart. America the Beautiful is/was indeed the first piece of music taught. Brought tears to my eyes, thank you for the memories!!

Nicely done! Beautiful main melody to this composition. Have to say, the possibility of poor-weather situations like this make me think a couple members of bands’ front ensembles should also learn their field show music parts on marching bells, to avoid those unfortunate gaps in the music when the front ensemble would’ve been playing.
