Probably no bigger underdog ever but here are a couple: Buster Douglas vs Tyson Villanova vs Georgetown NC State vs Houston Jets vs Colts Super Bowl 3 Leon Spinks vs Ali 1 Rocky Balboa vs Drago

Miracle on Ice should be #1! It's an iconic game with an Iconic player.

Yeah a top2 crack for sure. . . a justification: Patriots were great!

I consider it # 1 because it was college kids facing Russian pro's. It was indeed a Miracle On Ice. I was stationed in S. Korea when they won. I was (and still am) a hockey fan. a life-long Bruins fan from Hull, MA. Hockey was a way of life. I'm 70 years old now and still love hockey.

I was in a bar in NH when this game was playing, I was 21 years old. Watching it, all I remember is that at the end of the game the bar erupted. It was amazing! These guys were instant heroes.

Jimmy Craig was an 8 armed MONSTER THAT DAY! Greatest singing performances of an athlete ever!!! I was 11 years old & remember it like it was yesterday! The movie w Kurt Russell is one of the best sports movies ever made!

Huge Red Sox fan, and Patriots fan, and I can say without a doubt this is the greatest sporting event of my life. Didn't see it live, but watched the broadcast a few hours later and it still brings an enormous smile, and usually tears, to my face. Thanks for posting

First time hearing Jim Craig speak. What a great guy. Confident (not arrogant), laid back, well spoken!!

This is the defining moment of my sports fandom. I remember being at the grocery store with my mom and the butcher told us the result and my mom screamed. We had a watch party that night and when they won my Dad, who’s not a sports fan, was jumping up and down and yelling. And that’s why I always root for the underdog.

I like if true when Herb Brooks walked off and said at the buzzer at the end of that game “ it’s their moment”!

I played ice hockey in high school before it became what it is today for a girl to do so, and it was one of the best times of my life so it's nice having been able to live my dream through someone who actually experienced it. Thank you GWN.

For Americans, this has a legit case for greatest game ever. I may have a generational bias but, this was Rocky vs Drago before Rocky IV was a thing.
@simonmarks687023 сағат бұрын
It is criminal that there are 3 patriots games above this, I understand the bias, and the excellence shown in those games, but this was a moment in history we will never see again. These players weren’t stars, that day they became national heroes. The cultural impact, not only in the US, but across the world that this game has had will endure far beyond our memory of even the greatest superbowls ever played. Not to downplay the patriots of that period, there were some amazing things done and those were incredible games, but 3 games above it?! Even accounting for recency bias, it blows me away that this is not a top 3 game.

When first started watching this podcast (seen almost every episode) this is the first game I thought of and I'm so glad this game got covered. Also I'm surprised that Jim liked how the movie portrayed them, most Hollywood movies piss people off by what they change.

I remember watching the HBO documentary “do you believe in miracles“, and the thing that always struck me was the interview with the hostage from the American Embassy in Iran saying that, when they were educated about what had gone on in the world, during their year in captivity, that they cheered for the US hockey team the most. I really wonder what Jim, and the other 1980 team members think about what the American hostages in Iran said, about that game.

Imagine a place where you could just walk where ever you want except industry and critical infrastructure. Imagine a place that you did not have to spend your income on needs like your house. Imagine a place where you could spend that income on your wants and pursue what you want because your needs were always satisfied with governmental safety nets. Imagine a place where people go to prison and are treated like they can become a better version of themselves and not start at -50 when they get back out. Thats what we could have here in the US. We just have to think outside of capitalism.

This is number 1. It’s way more than a sporting event or a game. It’s a cultural phenomenon. The entire country rallied around this team and against the ideals of the Soviet Union and when we won the game the country was united. From non hockey fans to hockey fans it wasn’t about hockey. It was about America.
