The British were armed with the "Brown Bess," a smooth bore musket accurate to about 50 yards. Their main tactic was to march up to about 50 yards, you take your shot, we take our shot, then rush in with bayonets before the enemy could reload. The American militia from the Revolutionary war on, didn't know beans about bayonets. Thus, the militia would take their shot and run and would not, could not, face the bayonets. However, in New Orleans, the Kentucky and Tennessee militia (thus the Tennessee Volunteers) didn't know beans about bayonets either, but they were armed with rifles accurate to 300 yards and knew how to hit what they were shooting at.

Jacksons raids caused the British general to send a message stating "These raids are very ungentlemanly" Jackson responded " i think it's very ungentlemanly for you to be on American land and you should go back to from where you came"

Two of my ancestors fought at the Battle of New Orleans. At the time of the battle the two men were unrelated. But their respective children would marry and produce my "8 Greats" grandfather. My own historical research has pretty much determined where these men were at the battle. Both were wounded in the battle and recovered. Really interesting story.

"General Jackson approves this mandate." What guile!!!! General Andrew Jackson reminds me so much of General George S. Patton: "Old Blood and Guts." As a Native-born Tennessean and transplanted Texan, it makes me so proud that General Andrew Jackson was an American General.

In 1814 we took a little trip, Along with colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississippi. We took a little bacon and we took a little beans, And we fought the bloody British in the town of New Orleans. We fired our guns and the British kept a comin', There wasn’t 'bout as many as there was awhile ago. We fired once more and they began to runnin' On down the Mississippi to the gulf of Mexico. Oh we looked down the river and we seen the british come. There must have been a hundred of 'em beatin' on a drum. They stepped so high and they made their bugles ring. We stood behind our cotton bales and didn? t say a thing. Old hickory said we could take 'em by surprise, If we didn’t fire our muskets till we looked 'em in the eyes. We held our fire till we seen their faces well, Then we opened up our squirrel guns and gave 'em a little, well, we Fired our guns and the British kept a comin', There wasn’t 'bout as many as there was awhile ago. We fired once more and they began to runnin' On down the Mississippi to the gulf of Mexico. We fired our cannons till the barrels melted down, Then we grabbed an alligator and we fired another round. We filled his head with cannonballs and powdered his behind, And when we touched the powder off, the gator lost his mind. We fired our guns and the British kept a comin', There wasn’t 'bout as many as there was awhile ago. We fired once more and they began to runnin' On down the Mississippi to the gulf of Mexico. Many of those were descendants of the 240,000 highlanders of the highland clearances, 1746. The British then landed their Scot fusiliers at the battlefield on the Ramparts and not a one breached the line. The War of 1812 was NOT over with the negotiated treaty at Ghent. That was just the agreed-upon terms to be brought back to each country's government, the Parliament and Congress. The British did not recognize the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 between the US and France (Napoleon) and with some merit. I will skip the details but basically Napoleon "stole" Louisiana from Spain in 1801 and it was not his to sell in 1803. A British victory at New Orleans, and thus gaining a foothold in "Louisiana" which stretched from the Gulf to Canada and encompassed parts of 37 states today, would have changed history. So, those of you saying the American victory at New Orleans was a mere "after the fact" side show don't know your history. No way, I will say again, NO WAY would the British Parliament have ratified the Treaty of Ghent with its army holding New Orleans, and thus, Louisiana.

These British units were probably the best troops in the world-hardened veterans of the Napoleonic Wars. A survivor said he'd never experienced such a tremendous hail of fire in all his years in Europe. I think 'Old Hickory' knew he didn't stand a chance out in the open so digging in and letting the British attack across swampy ground was his best chance-which proved overwhelmingly correct. It's a precursor to the Civil War-where the rifle proved it's superiority when used from a defensive position. Add to this Jackson's clever idea of the front rank firing then falling back to reload while another rank stepped up. A continuous hail of rifle fire against massed troops out in the open proved devastating. 2,000 British shot down compared to 8 killed and 13 wounded on Jackson's side. Too bad the war was over already.

The War was not over before the Battle of New Orleans was fought. Article IX of the Treaty of Ghent specified that the war would be over after both belligerents signed the treaty, both belligerents ratified the treaty, and the belligerents exchanged ratifications. That did not happen until a month after the Battle of New Orleans happened.

Treaties are signed temporarily by negotiating ambassadors, but the standing governments of both nations must ratify them in the case of a conditional armistice like this one. The British were failing on all campaigns against Detroit and the Great Lakes. The Baltimore campaign failed. They burned DC but it was an empty city and had no logistical value. The US government was back a month later meeting in the post office. The war was expensive, with Napoleon on Elba it no longer served British interests to keep America embargoed or to swell their royal navy crews. It was the British Foreign Office in Oct 1814 that requested the armistice on status quo. The British military was furious, as the war would extend there careers and offer captured booty. Thus the move on New Orleans following the failure in Baltimore. The military assumed it would be a ground taken treaty, not a status quo no gains treaty. The US wanted the Canadian towns. The UK wanted Detriot and Louisiana to restore warm water ports and St Louis to Canada. Neither got it. However the US did gain a neutral free trade Great Lakes for perpetuity. The US took South Mississippi and the Mobile district from Spain and didn't give it back. The US gained Northern Maine that had been in dispute. The US assembled its first professional army and those regiments are the seed of today's army.

Although the Battle of New Orleans had no real bearing on the outcome of the War of 1812, General Andrew Jackson's overwhelming victory elevated the National Pride of the United States, which had suffered a number of setbacks during the War of 1812. The Battle of New Orleans was also the last armed engagement between the United States and Great Britain.
@thunderbird1921

Yeah, the War of 1812 was a stalemate/draw in so many ways. The Canada campaign was a total bust and we had some embarrassing defeats elsewhere (the destruction in Washington being among the most ugly), but we did drive the British out eventually, won some significant naval engagements and firmly defeated Tecumseh's tribal army. Plus, the impressing of US sailors into Royal Navy service stopped, so one of the main objectives of the war was achieved. A wild, turbulent chapter in America's history no matter how you slice it.

@@thunderbird1921 Technically, if you count the dead, the Battle of New Orleans was a major defeat for Great Britain. For the campaign, British casualties totaled 2,459 with 386 killed, 1,521 wounded, and 552 missing, while American casualties totaled 333 with 55 killed, 185 wounded, and 93 missing. You may view the war as "a draw, but for the United States, the War of 1812 solidified the United States as a nation. It also started the slow decline as Great Britain as a World Power.

@Michael Holmes Never heard of "The Aroostook War" (aka "Pork and Beans War") until I looked it up. Much like "The Pig War" (Fighting getting started over a lousy pig????? Jesus!). From the information that I've found, the term "war" was rhetorical; local militia were called out but never really engaged in actual combat. The only real casualties were 38 non-combat deaths. 2 by bear attacks. Historians classify it as "an International Incident."

No it didn't. The war ended in mid-February 1815. Article IX of the Treaty of Ghent says there will be no end of the war or hostilities until both sides have ratified and exchanged the treaty officially, which did not happen until February 17, 1815. The British also sneakily negotiated the Treaty of Ghent in Fall/Winter 1814 while secretly ordering General Pakenham to invade Mobile and New Orleans. Jackson stopped them at Mobile and New Orleans. The battle of New Orleans was not one day. It was fought beginning in early December 1814 when the British invaded Louisiana and set up troops and guns right outside of New Orleans. The British were not going to leave New Orleans if they had won the battle because they and their allies Spain did not recognize the Louisiana Purchase because they voided all treaties and land deals done by Napoleon from 1799-1815. They claimed the 1800 purchase of Louisiana from Spain by Napoleonic France was illegitimate so Louisiana was not a part of the Treaty of Ghent negotiations until the Battle of New Orleans forced them to accept that it belonged to the USA.

***** Kind of amusing that you automatically assume I'm a "Brit". I'm not. I just have a hobbyists interest in military history, and early American history too. I do realise that it's sometimes difficult to take an objective view of your own country's history, particularly if you are American, which I assume you are? I'm actually Australian, and if you are an American I guess you might need help with that. Australia is not a German speaking country in Western Europe. Go to a globe of the World and look at the USA. Right underneath the USA you will see Mexico, but I expect you know that. Now look below Mexico. You will see a large continent. wide at the top and narrowing to a point as you move south. That is "South America" (You are in North America. so the bit below you is "South America"....get it?) Now. run your finger down "South" America till you reach the bottom.....you doing fine. You will know when you get to the bottom because there will be no more land. Now. move your finger to the left.....keep moving it right across the Pacific. You will see lots of small islands but ignore them.....eventually you will come to a large island continent, that's Australia. It will probably have "Australia" written on it in big letters. which should help you. Australia is an English speaking country (not German) , not unlike the USA. You would probably feel quite at home there (once you got used to not seeing fat, overweight people all over the place) A couple more things. Charlton Heston WASN'T present at the Battle (He was an actor who played "Old Hiccory") Neither was Johnny Horton. Oh, and it wasn't squirrel guns that drove off the British. It was very cleverly placed artillery ("artillery" is very big guns....like your police carry only much. much bigger). Have a nice day Matey

The British while only able to dedicate 15% of it's military to the USA front (At it's height of a deployment) technically only needed to hold on to Canada to claim victory (incorrectly but that statement has more validity then your multiple lies) but the only real achievement of the US in the war was to stop the sale of British arms to the natives which again is not a particularly impressive feat given the bulk of Indian weapons came from American traders in the first place, the US then went on to essentially commit genocide against the indigenous population in the expansion west and break almost every agreement they made with them when it became inconvenient, a stigma the USA will have to live with forever but sure, yOu WoN...

SO the British army that marched from Canada marched and fought the whole breadth until they got south to New Orleans, but the British had no ammunition OR supplies left and it was the Americans who did. SO this doco is VERY UNTRUE....as to the war futher north on the Canadian front it was the Americans who invaded Canada that precitated the engagement, NOT the way this doc0 wants to p0rtray it, as to the impressment of US sailors , which this doco says,, that is crap too.......beaca8se just like the US does today , the British at that time, as they were fighting Napoleon on the continent the British had banned any trade with them from foreign nations and the USA knew this and ran the blockade any way. so the British too action to STOP this, just like the USA does today; The British army at New Orleans was NOT experienced and were NOT ever under Wellington, they were left overs that were never in significant numbers and once again it has to9 be said that the British at New Orleans were OUT OF AMMUNTION AND SUPPLIES and this information is available if you really want to search for it.

Umm, no. They were hardened veterans of the Peninsular War in Spain versus Napoleon. Because these particular British troops had a huge love of their Spanish allies from the Peninsular War they wanted to help retake the Louisiana Purchase (that the British/Spanish VOIDED because they did not recognize any treaty and land deals done by Napoleon) for the Spanish Empire and even split up Louisiana between Britain and Spain as spoils of war. The British never planned on recognizing Louisiana Territory as being American and were not planning to leave New Orleans if they had won the battle. Same thing like how the USA invaded and conquered West Florida from Spain (British ally during the War of 1812) in 1813 and never evacuated West Florida after the Treaty of Ghent.

Woulda, shoulda, coulda. The final battle was like the third strike in baseball. The first two mistakes by the British were stupid mistakes. The third and final one was just the result of the failures of the first two strikes. The British made two disastrous blunders (two strikes) before 1/8/1815. The "reconnaissance in force" on Dec 28 should have pressed forward because thousands of Jackson's men had retreated because they all knew if the British had just kept walking forward they would have taken Line Jackson with very little casualties. On December 28 the defensive line on the canal was not finished yet at all. On January 1 the British and Americans had an artillery duel and again the Americans were retreating to their second line of defense because numerous American guns were knocked out by the British unlike the fateful final battle. But because the British had no more artillery ammo they decided to not send in the infantry to take Line Jackson.

The British were not interested in a war with the US, they had much bigger fish to fry. They had to go and sort out Napoleon (again) and consolidate India (Jewel in the Crown). Sadly the net result of the deadlock was that the US then looked west and did terrible things to the native Americans whilst maintaining huge numbers of slaves. Makes one think! If the Brits had kept up the blockades and diverted troops from Europe and India the native American and slaves may have had a very different past.....

Ron Finuf . Your debater is correct. The war was not over. The last battles would be a month later in Mobile Bay and St Marys in Georgia. Wars end when combat ends. Negotiated treaties mean nothing until both governments approve them, unless one force or the other unconditionally surrenders. Many wars have several treaties and armistices then fighting starts back up. In the case of 1812, neither force surrendered. They simply acknowledged on Christmas 1814 that the purpose of the war/conflict had gone away. After the failure of the Baltimore campaign following the Canadian retreat from Detroit, the UK saw no future gains, the US had grown from a silly joke in 1812 into a similar fighting force to the UK regulars. The UK had long since rescended the Orders in Council that started the war anyway, and Napoleon was in Elba. The US had what they wanted and the UK what they needed, why fight further, except.... The British military knew treaties were being negotiated and were, like good conquerors, trying to take as much ground as possible before ratification. Lord Gen Packingham had only arrived in New Orleans from Europe a week or so before Christmas. He knew what was going on in Ghent. Jackson, though, had no idea about the negotiations.

that line may well have come from the trial of Henry Ford, they were trying to stop him from publishing the international Jew, and accused him of being insane, they asked him in court ''How many British soldiers came to fight in the revolutionary war'' he replied ''a lot more than went back '' went on to point out he didnt have to know every little fact that he was a millionaire and he had people working for him who could give him the answer to any question he needed to know.

Every account of the Battle of New Orleans says the British, while defeated and demoralized after the battle, did not rout. They held their position for about 10 days after the Battle then withdrew from the battlefield.
