Filmmaker, writer, actor, and artist Miranda July talks to Desi Lydic about how her new novel, “All Fours,” is a coming-of-age story for any woman in her 40s who has “secret desires and anxieties about those desires, and is wondering what’s going on with her body and her marriage, and just her whole self.” They discuss how many of the topics covered in the novel, like perimenopause, traumatic childbirth, and female sexual freedom, often go undiscussed, and July explains the difference between a “driver” and a “parker.” #DailyShow #DesiLydic #MirandaJuly

I really appreciate Desi. She's funny, intelligent, and tonight reveals another layer of depth. And I hope this does not sound silly, as I'm a 58 yr old male, but I liked that two women were having a conversation about things I'll never experience or know. But I can listen and learn.

Sounds like a nice book. It is weird why some things are not talked about in the USA, my daughter had the luck of being able to grow up and learn here in Germany (German/American) where that is taught in middle-school and i had a conversation with her where we talked about what is NOT taught in the USA. She was shocked. I also told her about the fact that she knows more about US history than more than 60% of US born US citizens.

Women, men, everyone, are eventually led by age to the point of the fear-driven feelings of irrelevance, of feelings of mortality, feelings of falling short on accomplishments. Of course, there are no love songs or poetry written about this stage of life, because those songs and poems associated with young hormonal changes are socially and biologically intended to support feelings at that time in order to perpetuate the acts required to continue the human species. That noted, there really should be more explored and expressed about the further end of the arc of life, what men and women endure as they age into the sunset.

*To The Author…* What if a person is the correct age but not married and or doesn’t have kids? I know many women that fit one or both things. Has anyone read this to know that? Maybe the author might see my comment and let us know? Thanks!
@JillKnapp
@JillKnapp 27 күн бұрын
It's not her job to write a book for us. She saw that books were missing for *her* experience and the shared experiences of her friends, so that's the book she wrote. Maybe you or one of your friends can write that book for your experience-- there's definitely a market! Or... maybe you can read her book and take away insight about people who have many similarities to you without the book being specifically about your experience. After all, isn't that one reason we read books? To learn to understand others' experiences, even if they are fictional?
@TurtleTimeVoiceOvers
@TurtleTimeVoiceOvers 27 күн бұрын
I think the author knows who might most benefit from her writings. If I wrote a book and someone asked if their particular situation would benefit from reading my book I’d have absolutely no problem being honest about it. Authors love getting questions and don’t really need defenders. No offense. Some of us are better readers than others and or might not even be able to afford a book over a meal. Finding out about a product and how it can help you or those you love isn’t a crazy thing to do.
